- DG016-018 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Internal diam. 17m NNW-SSE, 15m ENE-WSW. A subcircular area enclosed by a much ruined stone wall. A 10m stretch of the outer face of the wall on the NE, and a 5m stretch of the inner face on the SE, both composed of contiguously placed blocks of stone is visible in the collapsed stone. The wall is 2.35m in width along here and up to .5m in height. Around the rest of the circumference most of the stone has been removed. Occasional stones in situ mark the course of the wall as does a slight grassed-over stony bank. The interior slopes slightly downwards from W to E. Two small stone enclosures are just outside the cashel wall, one on the SE and the other along the line of the wall on the N. These are of recent date. The cashel is about 250m S of the shore on an elevated rocky platform with grazing between the rock outcrops. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
