  Description

  The Burial Ground marked on the 3rd edition of the OS 6-inch map consists of a slightly raised area 43.5m E-W and 13.5m N-S. It is very overgrown and covered with field clearance stones. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008 Excavation licence number 99E0679 Testing was carried out on the site of the proposed development of eleven houses, a roadway, a sewage treatment plant and related percolation area east of Quigley's Point in the vicinity of the site of a burial-ground at Carrowkeel td, Co. Donegal, at the north-east of the shore of Lough Foyle. The site is on a south-south-west-facing slope, at the base of which is a north-west/south-east-flowing stream. Testing was carried out on 27 November 1999. Using a wide, toothless trenching bucket, twenty test-trenches were excavated. The natural olive to yellow/brown subsoil was sealed by a series of deposits of silts, gravels and sands. These strata in turn underlay a deposit of small to medium-sized stones, widely undulating sod and topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. Excavation licence number 99E0167 ext Monitoring of construction works on the proposed Clar-Barnesmore road realignment was carried out between the townlands of Spierstown and Friarbush, Co. Donegal, between 12 April 1999 and 10 April 2000. The underlying geology consisted of gleys, with peaty gleys, inter-drumlin peats and acid-brown earths as associated soils. These strata consistently overlay a compact, blue/grey, sandy boulder clay and limestone bedrock exposed at the base of excavations. An archaeological excavation was carried out at Keadew Lower, a drying kiln (Excavations 1999, 42, 99E0379). Advance archaeological testing was also carried out at Friarbush townland, on a series of modern field ditches (Excavations 1999, 42, 99E0505). Nothing further of major archaeological significance was noted.   Description

  This feature is named 'Cromlech' on the original OS 6-inch map (1833-4). There are no visible remains at the site. It is described as 'the druidical remains of an altar' in an OS Name Book (1833-4) and 'Druid's Altar' in the OS Memoirs (1833), although no further details are provided. According to the OS Memorandums (1834-42), it was pointed out to Lieutenant T.A. Larcom, officer in charge at the Ordnance Survey, and George Petrie, head of the historical and antiquarian department of the Survey, when they visited the area in 1835. Whatever the nature of this feature, it had apparently been removed by 1848, as it is named 'Site of Cromlech' on the OS 6-inch map of that date. Donegal, 1?4 mile north of Quigley's Point and c. 500m north-east of the shore of Lough Foyle. The site is on low ground in an area of rich pasture. Testing was carried out on 19 November 1999. Using a wide, toothless trenching bucket, nine test-trenches were excavated. The natural, stony subsoil was sealed by a series of narrow bands of silts, gravels and sands. These strata in turn underlay a deposit of small to medium-sized stones, sod and topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. (Excavations Bulletin 1999) Declan Moore, 8 Yewland Green, Renmore, Galway. Excavation licence number 99E0679 ext. Between 6 January and 8 January 2001 monitoring of construction works took place on the site of the proposed development of eleven two-storey semi-detached dwelling-houses, sewage treatment plant and associated services and access road at Quigley's Point, Carrowkeel, Co. Donegal. The proposed development is located on a south-south-west-facing slope at the base of which there is an enclosed children's burial-ground or cillín. Nothing of archaeological interest was observed during pre-development archaeological testing carried out in 1999 (Excavations 1999, No. 132). Subsequently monitoring of topsoil-stripping was recommended as part of a planning condition. The underlying geology consisted of sands, gravels and silts. These strata consistently overlay a compact yellowish-brown sandy boulder clay and sandstone with quartz pebbles and gritty pelitic schist bedrock exposed at the base of excavations. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of monitoring. • The Manse, manse, 1860–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey former Presbyterian manse associated with Greenbank Presbyterian church, built c. 1870, with single-bay canted bays to ground floor and two-storey and single-storey extensions to rear. Hipped natural slate roof with paired smooth rendered chimneystacks over plinths with coping, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth course, moulded sill course to first floor. Square-headed window openings to ground floor and segmental-arch-headed window openings to first floor with two-over-two and one-over-two horned timber sash windows and stone sills. Round-arch-headed door opening with smooth rendered Doric pilasters surmounted by round-arch moulded architrave hood with keystone detail, with timber panelled door and glazed overlight. Set within own grounds with garden to rear, two entrances to front and north with wrought-iron gates on rendered piers, and bounded by a high hedge to north and east and by modern wall to south and west.
