  Description

  Freestanding Catholic church, built 1961 and extended 1990, comprising double-height hall with canted corners to the nave gable (west) and the chancel\sanctuary gable (east), side aisles to the north and south contained under same roofline, single-storey sacristy (on octagonal-plan) to the south-east corner linked to main body of building by enclosed single-storey flat-roofed hallway, tall detached bell tower (on octagonal-plan) to the south-west having pointed-arched opening with three graded bell metal bells with largest to top and surmounted by flat roof with metal cross finial over, porch to the south-west corner of nave contained within main body of building, single-bay single-storey flat-roofed plant room to the north-west corner, and with single-storey oratory and services extensions to the north (added 1992). Shallow pitched copper-sheeted roofs with overhanging eaves, metal rainwater goods and downpipes; shallow hipped standing seam metal roof to sacristy with metal sculptural crowing cock weather vane to apex. Mono-pitched metal-sheeted roof to prayer room\chapel extension to the north. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth painted plinth course with painted precast concrete columns to side elevations. Statue of St. Peter mounted over entrance door to south-west corner. Square-headed window openings to side elevations of nave (to western half) and to the north side of sanctuary having slim painted concrete sills, timber-framed window screens with leaded coloured and stained glass windows with figurative central panels to windows to the south side of nave. Large pointed-arched window opening to the west side of nave having timber-framed windows with leaded coloured glass window. Square-headed window openings to sacristy with timber-framed frosted leaded glass windows. Square-headed window openings to addition to the north with modern fittings. Pointed-arch entrance door opening to the south-west corner of nave having smooth rendered reveals, timber panelled double-doors with decorative carved timber motifs to alternating panels, leaded coloured glass sidelights, and with leaded coloured glass overlight with central St. Peter’s Keys motif. Gullwing timber-clad ceiling, tapering metal columns separating side aisles, exposed split concrete brick walls, timber pews, reordered sanctuary with monolithic altar having central carved fish motif over St. Peter’s Key motif, reredos tapestry depicting St. Peter the fisherman, and with gallery to the west end having open timber and metal parapet, Stations of the Cross to nave walls. Sanctuary reordered 1987. Set back from road in elevated site to the south-east end of Milford. Rubble stone boundary walls to the south site boundary. Mature trees to site. Pathway from the west with metal railings to north side. Rendered boundary walls to site.

  Description

  Pair of two-bay two-storey houses with converted dormer attic levels, dated 1844 and altered c. 1990, having two-storey return and single-storey extensions to the rear (west). Building to the north later in use as a shop with modern shopfront having fixed-pane timber display windows. Now in use as offices. Replacement hipped and pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystack to the south gable end having clay pots over, modern gable-fronted dormer window to the south end of main elevation (east), and with cut stone eaves course. Randomly coursed and roughly squared rubble sandstone walls, formerly rendered. Smooth cement rendered walls to the side elevations (north and south) and to the rear. Cut stone date stone at first floor level to the building to the north with inscribed ‘CHAS. HAY 1844’. Square-headed window openings having smooth rendered reveals, flush brick block-and-start surrounds, and with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash at ground floor level and single eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash window to the south end of building to the south at ground floor level. Enlarged window openings to former shopfront having smooth rendered reveals, painted concrete lintels over, and with fixed-pane display windows. Square-headed doorway to the north end of the building to the south having smooth rendered reveal, brick block-and-start surround, timber panelled door with bolection mouldings and plain overlight; square-headed doorway to the south end of the building to the north having smooth rendered reveal, brick block-and-start surround, battened timber door bolection and plain overlight; square-headed doorway to the centre of shopfront having modern glazed timber door and plain overlight. Road-fronted to the south end of Milford; situated on corner of Main Street and Moyle Road. Section of rubble sandstone walling to the south having integral segmental-headed carriage-arch with brick voussoirs. Section of rubble stone boundary wall and lawned area adjacent to the north.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1860, having central single-bay single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch to the front elevation (north-east), a two-storey with attic level block to the south-west. Possibly originally in use as a surgery or an official’s residence. Now in use as a private house with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed garage extension to the south-east side elevation. Replacement hipped slate roof with projecting eaves course, two central red brick chimneystacks with clay pots over, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat roof to entrance porch with decorative moulded cornice parapet. Pitched natural slate roof to block to the west having central brick chimneystack. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls over projecting smooth rendered plinth course, and with smooth rendered pilasters to the corners of main body of building having moulded smooth rendered plinths\pedestals to base, and with moulded render cornices over. Smooth rendered pilasters to corners of porch. Square-headed window openings having painted stone sills, and with six-over-six-pane timber sliding sash windows. Some four-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to the west side elevation; square-headed opening to the south elevation of block to the south-west at ground floor level having fixed multi-pane timber window. Square-headed doorway to the east side of entrance porch having replacement timber panelled door. Single-storey outbuilding to the south-east of house, built c. 1860 and linked to house by modern garage extension having hipped and pitched natural slate roof, roughcast rendered walls, and square-headed openings. Set back from road in own grounds to the south\south-east of the centre of Milford. Mature gardens to the front (north) and to the west; tarmacadam driveway and forecourt to the north. Partially rendered rubble stone boundary wall to road-frontage to the north; wall rebuilt to the east side of gateway. Main gateway to the north-east of site comprising a pair of ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having plinths to base, moulded cut stone coping over, and with a pair of wrought-iron gates with cast-iron finials. Hooped wrought-iron railings to the garden to the west of site and rubble stone boundary wall to the rear (south).

  Detached four-bay single-storey former national school, dated 1872, having three-bay single-storey gable-fronted breakfront to the front elevation (north-east) with single-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to the south-east side, and with later single-bay single-storey addition to the south-east side of the main body of building, built c. 1910. Now in use as a workshop with single-storey addition to the rear (south-west). Hipped natural slate roof to main body of building having cast-iron rainwater goods, and with two-stage brick chimneystack to the rear elevation (south-west). Pitched natural slate roof to breakfront having rendered verge to the front (north-east), cast-iron rainwater goods, and with central stepped yellow brick chimneystack having decorative brick coping surmounted by rendered coping. Mono-pitched slate roof to outbuilding attached to the south-east side of breakfront. Coursed rubble sandstone walls over chamfered cut stone plinth course, and with flush dressed ashlar block-and-start quoins to the corners. Cut stone plaque (on rectangular-plan) to the centre of the front elevation of breakfront having bevelled edging, incised surround, and with incised text reading ‘MILFORD MALE NATIONAL SCHOOL 1872’. Square-headed window openings with yellow brick block-and-start surrounds and headers, stone sills, and with three-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to main block and nine-pane timber windows to front elevation of breakfront (north-east). Central square-headed doorway to the front face of breakfront (north-east) having yellow brick block-and-start surrounds and headers, and battened timber door. Doorway reached by flight of cut stone steps. Set back from road in own grounds to the south-east of Milford. Yard to front (north). Bounded on road-frontage to the north by rubble stone boundary wall having fieldstone coping over. Boundary wall partially demolished to the north-east corner of site. Pedestrian entrance to the north comprising a pair of ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having cut stone coping over. Possible detached former school master’s house or related building located adjacent to the south-east (not investigated).

  Attached single-bay three-storey former store or warehouse associated with former corn mill, built c. 1860. Now out of use\in use as outbuilding. Pitched corrugated roof, now collapsing, having projecting stone eaves course. Rubble stone walls. Pulley mechanism over opening at second floor level. Central square-headed window openings\loading bays, now blocked. Central square-headed doorway, now blocked, having timber lintel over. Road-fronted to the south-east of the centre of Milford. Attached two-storey out buildings to either side (north-west and south-east).
