  Description

  Attached three-bay two-storey rendered house, built c. 1800, having integral single-bay outbuilding attached to the north end of the main elevation (west). Formerly also in use as a grocery shop (closed c. 1950); now out of use. Pitched natural slate roof having red clay roll ridge tiles, cement rendered chimneystack (offset to the south side of centre) cement rendered chimney stack, limewashed projecting brick eaves course, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Limewashed roughcast rendered rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window at ground floor level (south end of main elevation) and with two-over-two pane timber sash windows at first floor level. Square-headed door openings to the central bay and end bay to the north having stone plinth blocks to base, and timber sheeted doors. Square-headed loading bay to the north end bay at first floor level having timber sheeted floor. Road-fronted to the north of the centre of Pettigoe.

  Description

  Walled garden on rectangular-plan, erected c. 1800 and renovated c. 1930 and 2008. West elevation now collapsed; now out of use. South side incorporates wall of outbuilding associated with house to south (see 40850019). Rubble stone walls with cut stone coping over in sections. Flush ashlar block-and-start quoins to the north-east corner. Integral segmental-headed doorway to the north end of the east side of walled garden having brick voussoirs, cut stone plinth blocks, and cut stone step; opening now blocked with timber panel. Integral segmental-headed doorway to the south side of garden, adjacent to the east elevation of outbuilding, having brick voussoirs; doorway addressed by modern flight of concrete steps. Square-headed entrances to the north-west and south-west corners of garden each having concrete lintel over (c. 1930). Garden overgrown to interior with variety of mature fruit trees still extant. Associated with a terrace of three houses to the south built by the Leslie family (see 40850018 to 40850020). Located a short distance to the north-west of the centre of Pettigoe.

• Bridge, 1760–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Double-arched bridge carrying road over the Termon River, built c. 1780, having cut stone/ashlar triangular-profile cutwater to central pier on the upstream elevation (north) with domed cap over. Now closed off to traffic. Constructed of irregularly-coursed squared rubble stone masonry to spandrels, piers and to parapets. Roughly dressed stone coping to parapets with cement repairs in places. Two segmental-headed arches having dressed voussoirs and with rubble stone construction to the arch barrels. Tarmacadam deck with modern bollards to the east end. Located to the east/north-east of Pettigoe town centre.

• The Market Yard, market building, 1830–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Complex of former market buildings on U-shaped plan arranged around central courtyard/market yard, built c. 1840, comprising main multiple-bay two-storey building to the west/south-west with single-storey ranges running perpendicular to the main range to the north-east and south-east. Possibly also formerly in use for petty sessions/court house. Now out of use/in use as agricultural outbuildings. Modern storage sheds attached to the north/north-west. Pitched natural slate roofs with clay ridge tiles and surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods; projecting cut stone eaves course to two-storey range. Roughly squared coursed rubble stone walls; some rendered and/or limewashed walls to single-storey ranged to the north-east and south-east. Segmental-headed window openings with flush red brick block-and-start surrounds, stone sills and timber casement windows; some window openings now blocked. Shallow segmental-headed integral carriage arch to main building having dressed stone voussoirs and remains of timber double-doors. Square-headed door openings having remains of timber battened doors; shallow segmental-headed loading bays to main building at first floor level having red brick block-and-start surrounds. Yard to east enclosed by squared and coursed rubble stone wall having rock-faced coping over with dressed margins. Gateways to either end of boundary wall comprising pair of tooled ashlar gate piers (on square-plan) having rock-faced pyramidal coping over with dressed margins. Metal gate to opening to the north-east having corrugated metal sheeting over, gateway to the south-east now blocked. Located to the south/south-east of the centre of Pettigoe and adjacent to the north/north-west of the former Pettigoe Railway Station (see 40850010).

• Pettigoe Customs Station, customs station, 1922–1940 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey former customs office/station, erected c. 1930, having two-bay single-storey attachment to the south and single-bay porch to the north. Later in use as a tourist information Now disused. Pitched corrugated-metal roofs with overhanging eaves and metal rainwater goods, render chimneystack to the centre of the main body of building having terracotta pots over. Mono-pitched roof over porch to the north. Corrugated-metal clad walls over concrete footings. Square-headed window openings with multi-pane timber casement windows and timber sills. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors. Road-fronted to the south end of Pettigoe overlooking the main bridge (see 40850008) over the Termon River at Pettigoe linking County Donegal and County Fermanagh.

  End-of-terrace attached three-bay two storey house, built c. 1860. Possibly originally built as a return or as an extension to building adjacent to north (see 40850016). Pitched natural slate roof having projecting eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods, and having red brick chimneystack to the south gable end having ashlar quoins. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls. Square-headed window openings having stone sills, and with six-over-six horned timber sliding sash windows with exposed sash boxes at first floor level and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with horizontal glazing bars at ground floor level. Square-headed door opening to the south end of the front elevation (east) having plinth blocks to base and timber battened door. Road-fronted to the south end of the centre of Pettigoe.

  Corner-sited attached four-bay two-storey house with attic storey, built c. 1810, having shopfront at ground floor level added c. 1950. Now out of use. Pitched natural slate roof having castle-iron rainwater goods, projecting eaves course, and having tooled ashlar limestone chimneystacks to the east gable end and offset to the west side of centre. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls. Square-headed window openings at first floor level having six-over-six pane hornless timber sash windows and stone sills. Square-headed doorway to the west end of the front elevation (north) having glazed timber door and plain overlight. Shopfront at ground floor level having central recessed glazed timber door with overlight flanked to either side by splayed fixed-pane square-headed window openings, and having tiled surrounds to either end with Vitrolite fascia over. Road-fronted to the centre of Pettigoe.

Pitched natural slate roofs having projecting eaves courses; ashlar granite chimneystack to the east gable end of main body of building having projecting stringcourse and clayware pots, rendered chimneystack to the east gable end of extension/annex to the east. Smooth rendered walls having modern render block-and-start quoins to the east corner of main block. Square-headed window openings having replacement six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows at first and second storey level and to annex, and with eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash window to main body of building at ground floor level. Render aedicule surrounds (modern) to window openings at ground and first floor level with render architrave surrounds (modern) to window openings at second floor level. Round-headed recess to annex at ground floor level having square-headed window opening. Square-headed doorway to the west end of the front elevation having replacement door, plain overlight, and with modern doorcase having Doric columns supporting entablature over. Pitched natural slate roofs having projecting eaves course, and with a pair of rendered chimneystacks (one to west end and one to the centre) having ashlar granite stringcourses and ashlar granite coping over having modern clayware pots Smooth rendered walls having modern block-and-start quoins to the west corner. Square-headed window openings having replacement eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows at ground and second storey level, and with four-over-four pane timber sliding sash window at second floor level. Laneway to the west end gives access to rear with complex of two-storey outbuildings having rubble stone walls, pitched natural slate roofs, square-headed window openings with red brick voussoirs and replacement timber sash windows, and integral segmental-headed carriage-arch having red brick voussoirs and surrounds. Stone gate pier (on square-plan) to the west side of laneway; single-storey outbuilding to the west of lane. Former walled garden (see 40850006) to the rear (north).

  Description

  Wall-mounted memorial monument, erected c. 1920, comprising carved limestone surround supporting carved limestone pediment over with carved military motif (crossed rifles and flags) with Crown motif over to tympanum, and having pink granite memorial plaque listing names of local military personnel who died in World War 1. Inscription above plaque reading ‘In Proud and Grateful Commemoration’ and below plaque reading ‘Erected By Friends and Neighbours of the Gallant Men Whose Names Are Inscribed On This Memorial’. Set into rubble stone wall terminated to either side by piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal coping over. Single-storey outbuilding to the rear (north). Located to the west end of the centre of Pettigoe, and across the road to the north of the Church of Ireland church (see 40850022).

• Pettigoe Church of Ireland Church, church/chapel, 1830–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding double-height Church of Ireland church, built c. 1838, comprising five-bay nave, shallow single-chancel to the south, and projecting single-bay double-height gable-fronted entrance porch (added c. 1870) to the centre of the entrance gable (north) having recessed single-bay single-storey vestibules to either side (east and west). Cut stone gable-fronted bellcote over the north end of the nave having corbelled base. Pitched artificial slate roof having projecting eaves course, and raised cut stone verges to gable ends with moulded kneeler stones at eaves level. Cut stone chimneystack over north end of nave; cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with ashlar pilaster strips/buttresses between bays and to corners of nave elevations (north and south), to chancel, and to front porch and vestibules. Wide flat ashlar eaves course with projecting corbels, and having stepped ashlar plinth to base. Perforated cut stone roundel motif under window openings to sides of nave (east and west). Round-headed window openings to side elevations of nave having plain cut stone surrounds, chamfered stone sills, twin light windows with timber mullions and transoms and with round motifs to head with cast-iron petal detailing, and having cast-iron quarry glazed windows. Round-headed window openings to front face (north) of entrance porch, side vestibules, and to side elevations of nave (east and west) having plain cut stone surrounds, cut stone sills and cast-iron quarry glazed windows; round-headed window opening to chancel gable (south) having four-light window with timber mullions, transoms and timber nine-light tracery to head, and with figurative stained glass dated 1968. Round-headed doorway to front face of porch and to side elevations of vestibules (east and west) having cut stone surrounds with roll moulding/colonnetted reveals with carved capitals, roll mouldings to arch/archivolt, and timber panelled double-doors with timber panels over. Flight of cut stone steps on semi-circular plan serving doorway. Round-headed doorway to the east elevation of nave having plain cut stone surround and timber panelled door. Set back from road in own grounds to the west end of the centre of Pettigoe. Church set in graveyard with mainly nineteenth- and twentieth-century grave markers, both upstanding and recumbent. Site surrounded to the south, west and east by rubble stone boundary walls. Bounded on road-frontage to the north by rendered boundary walls having moulded coping and wrought-iron railings over. Main gateway to the north comprising a pair of rendered gate piers (on stepped-plan) having ball finials over, and with a pair of decorative wrought-iron gates. Gate piers (on stepped-plan) to either end of boundary wall to road-frontage.

• Barton Family Mausoleum, mausoleum, 1860–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding grave/mausoleum on rectangular-plan , erected c. 1870, containing the remains of the Barton family. Squared hammered ashlar wall with dressed margins to the east elevation having cut stone coping over; rubble stone walls to the north and south elevations. ‘BARTON’ in raised render lettering to the north side. Vaulted roof with grass over. Cut stone gravemarker/memorial to the west side of grave having leaded lettering reading ‘ THE VICTORY; 1 Cor XV 54-57; (a circle with Xp inside); Rev. 11-17; Amen;’ and ‘Tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; Matt XXXVIII 7’ Segmental-headed doorway to the east elevation having h rock-faced voussoirs with dressed margins; entrance now blocked. Erected adjacent to the west wall of Pettigoe Church of Ireland church, to the west of the church, and to the west of the centre of Pettigoe.

  Detached four-bay two-storey gable-fronted former court house and dispensary, built c. 1850, having flight of external cut stone steps to the east elevation giving access to door at first floor level. Possibly formerly in use as a market house to the ground floor; formerly also in use as a retail outlet. Renovated c. 2005. Pitched natural slate roof (replacement) having raised ashlar verge to the north gable end and with red brick chimneystacks to either gable end (north and south). Modern rooflights. Projecting eaves course brought across gable-fronted north elevation as stringcourse. Smooth rendered walling. Square-headed window openings at first floor level with replacement nine-over-nine pane horned timber sash windows and stone stills; square-headed window opening to the east elevation having replacement six-over-three pane timber sliding sash window; central segmental-headed window opening to the north elevation at ground floor level having replacement tripartite nine-over-nine pane horned timber sash windows. Segmental headed opening to the east elevation having paired timber windows. Square-headed door openings to the north elevation, flanking central window, having replacement glazed doors. Square-headed doorway to the east elevation at first floor level having replacement timber battened door; door accessed by flight of tooled stone steps having wrought-iron railings. Road-fronted to the west of Pettigoe town centre and adjacent to the west of Pettigoe Church of Ireland church. Section of rendered boundary wall adjacent to the west having integral segmental-headed carriage-arch with tooled ashlar voussoirs and surrounds, and wrought-iron gates.   Attached end-of-terrace three-bay two-storey with attic level house, built c. 1820 and extensively modified c. 1900, having two-storey returns to the rear (south). Possibly extended to the west by a bay at some stage. Pitched natural slate roof with projecting cut stone eaves course, roll clay ridge tiles, and with two rendered ruled-and-lined chimneystacks (on to the east gable end and one offset to the west side of centre). Some surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled –and-lined walls to front elevation (north) having rendered plinth to base and render block-and-start quoins to the corners. Roughcast and cement rendered walls to side and rear elevations. Square-headed window openings to main elevation having masonry sills, smooth rendered surrounds with shallow pointed/triangular heads, and having three-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed window openings to the rear (south) with variety of timber sash windows to the rear (south) elevation, to return, and to the east side elevation at attic level. Slightly projecting doorway to the centre of the main elevation (north) having square-headed door opening with timber panelled door having shouldered panels with bolection mouldings and brass door furniture, glazed overlight and sidelights with replacement glass, render hoodmoulding over with keystone detailing (with foliate detailing) and decorative label stops, raised render foliate detailing to door lintel, and having render block-and-start surround with rusticated vermiculated detailing. Road-fronted to the west of Pettigoe town centre. Laneway to the east gable end. Yard to rear entered through gateway to the east having wrought-iron flat-bar gate. Two-storey outbuildings to the rear having pitched slate and corrugated-metal roofs, rubble stone walls (limewashed and rendered in places), square-headed window openings with timber fittings, and square-headed doorways and loading bays having battened timber fittings. Rendered rubble stone boundary walls to site boundary to the rear.

  Attached three-bay two-storey house with dormer attic level, built or modified c. 1870, having two-storey extension to the rear (south). Pitched natural slate roof to main body of house having terracotta ridge tiles, projecting rendered eaves course, and with two cement rendered chimneystacks (one to the east gable end and one offset to the west side of centre). Some surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods, including profiled gutters. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls having raised render block-and-start quoins to the main elevation (north); cement rendered wall to the east gable and corrugated-metal clad walls to rear return (south). Square-headed window openings having masonry sills, render architrave surrounds, and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing bars. Two gabled dormer openings at attic level to front elevation and one to the centre of the rear elevation. Central square-headed doorway to the front elevation having render architrave surround over projecting plinth blocks, and with replacement timber door with overlight.   Attached four-bay two-storey house, built or rebuilt c. 1860, having projecting single-bay single-storey open timber-frame porch to the main elevation. Formerly in use as a constabulary barracks c. 1880 - 1922. Possibly originally two separate buildings later amalgamated to form a single property. Now in use as a private dwelling. Pitched artificial slate roof with overhanging eaves, and three red brick chimneystacks (one to either gable end and one offset to the west side of centre). Hipped felt roof to porch. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls at first floor level with smooth rendered horizontal channelled walls at ground floor level, separated by moulded stringcourse. Render block/channelled quoins to corners at first floor level pebbledashed/roughcast plinth course. Square-headed window openings with painted sills and replacement windows.   Description

  End-of-terrace three-bay two-storey house with attic level, built c. 1830. Now out of use. One of a terrace of four along with buildings adjoining to the west (not in survey). Pitched natural slate roof having projecting eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with red brick chimneystack to the east gable end and rendered chimneystack to the east end. Smooth rendered finish over projecting plinth; render failing in places exposing coursed squared rubble stone construction with roughly dressed flush quoins to the corners at the east end. Square-headed window openings with stone sills and six-over-six pane timber sash windows with exposed sash boxes. Central square-headed doorway having replacement door with overlight having timber diagonal glazing. Road-fronted to the west of Pettigoe town centre. Garden to rear (north).

  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey former national school, built c. 1850, having recessed single-bay two-storey bays to either end of the main elevation (north-west). Now in use as a guest house/holiday accommodation with two-storey extension and single-storey conservatory to rear, added c. 1985. Pitched natural slate roofs having projecting cut stone eaves courses and some surviving sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Coursed and dressed limestone walls with flush dressed sandstone quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with tooled flush ashlar sandstone block-and-start surrounds, ashlar sandstone lintels, cut stone sills, and with paired replacement eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows horned timber sash windows and some modern and uPVC windows. Square-headed door openings to front face of recessed bays (north-west) having tooled flush ashlar sandstone block-and-start surrounds, ashlar sandstone lintels, and with replacement glazed timber door with overlight to the recessed bay to the north-east and replacement timber panelled door to recessed bay to the south-west. Set back from road in own grounds to the west of Pettigoe, and located a short distance to the east of St. Mary’s Catholic church (see 40850030). Yard to front of site (north-west). Bounded on road-frontage to the north-west by rubble stone boundary wall having rock-faced stone coping over with dressed margins.

• St. Mary's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1810–1835 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding double-height Catholic church, built c. 1810 and altered c. 1880, in 1920 and c. 1980, comprising six-bay hall having cut stone bellcote over the north-east gable end, shallow single-bay sacristy to the south-east and having modern two-bay single-storey porch extension to the north-east. Modern single-storey confessional offshoots to the north-west elevation of hall. Pitched natural slate roofs having metal cross finial over south-west gable end of hall. Roughcast rendered walls over projecting smooth rendered plinth course; cement rendered walls to the north-west elevation of hall. Stepped ashlar buttress/frontispiece to the north-east end of hall having steeped ashlar pilasters with feathered ashlar coping over, ashlar stringcourse, pointed-arched opening containing bell at belfry level, and with cut stone cross finial over. Pointed-arched window openings to south-east elevation of main hall having smooth rendered reveals, having modern leaded stained glass windows. Blank elevation to the north-west side of hall. Square-headed window openings to modern porch extension to the north-east. Square-headed door opening to south-east face of porch having with timber double-doors; round-headed door opening to south-east elevation of sacristy having timber door and leaded overlight. Interior re-ordered c. 1980. Set back from road in own grounds on sloping site to the west/south-west of Pettigoe. Graveyard to the north-west and north having mainly twentieth-century gravemarkers. Carpark to the north-east of site. Rubble stone boundary wall to road-frontage to the south-east. Rubble stone boundary walls to rear of site.

  Description

  Freestanding limestone memorial monument, erected in 1953, comprising tapering carved limestone pedestal (on square-plan) having carved soldier figure over with rifle. Inscriptions to each face of pedestal (in Gaelic and English). Set on stepped plinth (on-circular plan) and surrounded by metal railings. Located in the centre of Pettigoe at road junction.
