  Description

  Pier/jetty, dated 1847/8, having storm wall to the south-west elevation and modern slipway to the centre of the north-east elevation. Still in use. Constructed of squared and coursed rubble stone masonry with squared and coursed/snecked rubble stone construction to storm wall having rubble stone coping over. Storm wall curves along with topography to the north-west end. Modern stone date plaque to the storm wall. Flights of cut stone steps to the north-east elevation giving access to water level. Cut stone coping to edges with concrete deck. Cut stone bollards (on square-plan) at intervals along the north-east elevation with cast-iron/steel winch to the east end. Pier juts out into Donegal Bay to the south-west of Mountcharles. Rubble stone retaining walls to quayside to the north-east.

• Salthill House, country house, steward's house, 1750–1790 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey over basement country house/agent's house with attic level, built c. 1770 and possibly partially remodelled c. 1820, having projecting central gable-fronted bay to the main elevation (south-east), central single-bay return to the rear (north-west) having iron water tank over, and with single-storey open shed attached to the north-east gable end, and with five-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to the south-west gable end. Pitched natural slate roof with moulded cut stone eaves cornice, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with rendered chimneystacks to the gable ends (north-east and south-west) having terracotta pots over. Pitched slate roof to projecting central bay/breakfront having moulded ashlar coping over. Natural slate roof to attached outbuilding to the south-west; corrugated-metal roof to open shed attached to the south-west gable end. Pebbledashed walls having chamfered ashlar sandstone plinth course. Eaves cornice brought across projecting central bay/breakfront as plain ashlar sandstone stringcourse. Square-headed window openings having ashlar sills, and with nine-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows at ground floor level and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows over at first floor level. Round-headed window opening at attic level to projecting central bay having six-over-three-pane timber sliding sash window. Square-headed window openings at basement level having six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows with wrought-iron security bars. Square-headed window openings to gable ends at attic level having nine-over-nine pane timber sliding sash windows to the south-west gable, and with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows at the north-east gable end. Round-headed doorway to projecting bay having architraved ashlar surround with moulded lintel and projecting keystone detail, plinth blocks to base, replacement timber panelled door, and with spider’s web fanlight over. Square-headed sidelights to either side of doorway having four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows and with wrought-iron security bars. Doorway reached by flight of cut stone steps with cut stone threshold/platform over basement level, and having rendered boundary walls, curving outwards to base, having cut stone coping and terminated by piers (on square-plan) having cut stone capstones over. Set back from road in extensive mature grounds overlooking Donegal Bay to the south and south-east; located to the south-west of Mountcharles and to the south-west of The Hall (see 40847025). Complex of outbuildings (see 40909938) and walled garden (see 40909939) to the rear (north-west), gate lodge (see 40909940) and gateway to the west/south-west, and former folly/summerhouse to the east (see 40909941).

  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey house with half-dormer attic level, built or heavily altered c. 1890, having single-bay single-storey extension attached to the south-west gable end. Pitched natural slate roof (large slates) to main body of building with raised rendered coping and rendered chimneystacks to gable ends. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Two gable-fronted dormer openings at roof level to the main elevation (south-east). Pitched artificial slate roof to extension having raised rendered coping and rendered chimneystack to the south-west gable end. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls to front elevation. Square-headed window openings at ground floor level and triangular-headed to dormer openings having three-over-three/one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing bars, and painted stone sills. Raised render surrounds to ground floor openings. Blank to rear elevation (north-west). Central square-headed door opening to main body of building having dressed stone plinth-blocks to base and with replacement timber door. Set within own grounds with gravel forecourt and modern bungalow to south. Long approach avenue to house from the east. Located to the west of Mountcharles. Single- and two-storey outbuildings to the west and south-west having pitched corrugated-metal roofs, rubble stone walls, and square-headed openings with timber doors. Flight of cut stone steps to outbuilding to the south-west.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1875, having single-bay single-storey gable-fronted entrance porch attached to the centre of the front elevation (south-west), single-bay two-storey addition attached to the north-west end, and with outbuilding/stable attached to the rear (north-east) having catslide roof over. Pitched replacement slate roof (fibre cement) having rendered chimneystacks to either end of the original dwelling; section of natural slate roof to the rear pitch. Corrugated-metal roof to the rear elevation at the north-west end. Roughcast rendered finish over rubble sandstone and coursed rubble sandstone walls. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows having margin glazing bars, and with stone sills. Square-headed window opening to addition to the north-west having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window; loop hole opening to the rear elevation (north-east) of attached outbuilding. Square-headed door opening to front face of porch having battened timber door and overlight. Set back from road in own grounds to the west/south-west of Mountcharles and a short distance to the north-west of Salthill/Salt Hill (see 40909909). Approach avenue to house from the south-west. Modern barn to site.

  Description

  Walled garden complex on rectangular-plan associated with Salt Hill (see 40909909), erected c. 1800 and heavily altered c. 1860. Now in use as ornamental gardens with some areas in use as kitchen gardens. Walls constructed of coursed rubble and random rubble stone masonry. Square-headed integral entrances having modern wrought-iron gates. South-east wall abuts main outbuilding (see 40909939) to rear of house. Glasshouse and potting shed to the north-west end. Set back from road in extensive mature grounds shared with Salt Hill (see 40909909). Located a short distance to the north-west of the shoreline of Donegal Bay, and to the south-west of Mountcharles.

  Description

  Single-bay single-storey former folly or summerhouse on circular-plan associated with Salt Hill, built c. 1820. Now in use as a decorative garden structure. No roof; decorative red brick eaves course. Rubble stone construction. Pointed-arch window opening having roughly squared surrounds/voussoirs. Pointed-arch door opening having roughly squared surrounds/voussoirs. Set back from road in attractive mature landscaped grounds to the east of the main house. Located a short distance to the north-west of the shoreline of Donegal Bay, and to the south-west of Mountcharles.

  Description

  Gateway serving Salt Hill (see 40909909) erected c. 1845, comprising a pair of roughcast rendered gate piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal ashlar capstones over, and with a pair of wrought-iron double-gates having decorative finials to central join and over hinges. Gateway flanked to either side by curved quadrant roughcast rendered boundary walls having cut stone coping and wrought-iron railings over, and terminated by rendered gate piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal ashlar capstones over. Located adjacent to road to the south-west of Salt Hill (see 40909909), and to the south-west of Mountcharles. Located a short distance to the north of the coastline of Donegal Bay. Attendant gate lodge (see 40909940) adjacent to the north-east.
