  Description

  Colhoun (1995) suggested that this may be the site of a 'Giant's Grave'. However, the indications are that a substantial mound of earth and some large stones at this spot are derived from land-clearance activities that took place sometime before 1943, when Colhoun visited the site.   Marked on all three editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Undistinguished mounds and a double line of large stones, may be the remains of this 'Fort'. It was situated in rough pasture.   Interior Diam. c. 16m-18m. A subcircular area enclosed by a collapsed stone wall surviving up to .75m in height and comprising of two outer facings of large stones with a small stone core. A break at the SW could be an entrance. To the N of the interior are two attached subcircular foundations (DG011-043001/002-). The larger is 6m in diameter and the smaller is attached at its W end. It is situated on a high rocky knoll. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.   Only very vague traces of a stone-walled enclosure survives of the single-ringed monument shown on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map. • Glennagannon Bridge, bridge, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Triple-arch bridge carrying road over the Glenngannon River, built c. 1800. Central and arch to east currently dry-arches. Segmental-headed arches having dressed ashlar voussoirs; squared and coursed rubble stone masonry to arch barrels with cut stone stringcourse at arch springing points. Squared and coursed\snecked rubble stone construction to piers, abutments, spandrels and parapets; squared crenellated rubble stone coping to parapets. Water pipe fixed to south side of south parapet. Tarmacadam deck with grass verges. Located in the rural countryside to the east of Carndonagh.

• House, 1860–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  end. Pitched natural slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks and raised rendered coping to gable ends (east and west), and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched corrugated-metal roof to block to east having raised rendered verge to the east gable end. Roughcast rendered walls; whitewashed rubble walls to block to east. Square-headed window openings with smooth rendered reveals, painted stone sills, and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with margin glazing bars; square-headed window openings to rear elevation (north) and to block to the east having one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows. Central square-headed door opening with smooth rendered reveals and battened timber double-doors. Set back from road with hedging to front of property. Modern bungalow, and two vernacular houses adjacent to the south. Ruinous mill building to the south-west of site. Located to the north-east of Carndonagh, adjacent to the east bank of the Glennagannon River.

  Description

  Semi-detached three-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1800, having lean-to single-bay single-storey shed attached to the north and single-bay single-storey outbuilding attached to the south gable end. Pitched/domed thatched roof having ropes and wire mesh over secured on wrought-iron bars below eaves level, and with rendered chimneystacks to gable ends; metal pegs for securing ropes at eaves level to the rear elevation, and to the gable ends. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course to front elevation, with whitewashed rubble stone walls to gable ends, rear elevation and attached outbuildings to either gable end. Square-headed window openings with painted stone sills, and with two-over-two pane horned timber sliding sash windows. Central square-headed door opening having replacement battened timber door. Set back from road within own grounds with garden to front (east) having picket fence to front boundary. Ruinous single-storey thatched vernacular house (see 40805027) immediately to south of site. Ruinous two\three-storey former corn mill building to rear of property having remains of pitched natural slate roof, rubble stone walls, and square-headed openings, some with brick lintels. Located to the north-east of Carndonagh, adjacent to the east bank of the Glennagannon River.

• Carndonagh Presbyterian Church, church/chapel, 1880–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four-bay gable-fronted Presbyterian church, dated 1886, with pedimented front, projecting gabled entrance door-case, and modern two-bay single-storey with attic extension to rear. Pitched slate roof with projecting eaves course, stucco gable copings and triangular skew-ends to pediment, wrought-iron finial to front, and replacement rainwater-goods. Pitched artificial slate roof to extension. Roughcast rendered walls with stucco pilasters to margins and with smooth rendered plinth course. Medallion date plaque to tympanum. Tudor-arched window openings with smooth rendered surrounds and continuous sill course, having multi-paned coloured glass in cast-iron quarries. Tudor-arched door opening with smooth rendered surround and feathered roof, timber diagonal boarded double doors with panel over. Set within own grounds with graveyard with headstones arranged around six-bay single-storey hall to the south-east. Site fronted by roughcast rendered wall with wrought-iron gates mounted on roughcast rendered piers with ashlar capping. Single-cell outbuilding to north-east with pitched slate roof and roughcast rendered walls. Located to east of Carndonagh.

  Detached three-bay two-storey former Presbyterian manse, built c. 1890, with two-bay two-storey return and single-storey lean-to extension to rear. Hipped slate roofs with projecting eaves, two central smooth rendered chimneystacks, additional smooth rendered chimneystack to rear, and replacement rainwater goods. smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with rendered block-and-start quoins. Square-headed window openings with uPVC windows and painted stone sills. Segmental-arch-headed door opening with timber panelled door flanked by fluted timber frame with sidelights over timber panel stall-risers, with cast-iron fanlight over, and stone threshold step. Set within own grounds with grass lawn to front. Two-storey rubble outbuilding with gabled projection to rear, with pitched slate roof, and red brick surrounds to openings. Modern gates and gate-piers. Located to the east of Carndonagh, with Presbyterian church to south-west.

Square-headed door opening with battened timber door. Set within own grounds, set back from street with hedging to front of property. Three-bay single-storey thatched outbuilding to east comprising overgrown rounded thatched roof and whitewashed rubble walls. Ruinous outbuildings to west of site comprising random rubble walls and mono-pitch slate and corrugated-metal roofs. Site bounded by dry-stone walls; wrought-iron gate mounted on rubble gate-piers; wrought-iron farm-gate to east of north wall; rubble gate-piers with pyramidal coping to west of north wall.
