• DU008-010002 Ecclesiastical site
  Description

  Shown as 'Monastery (site of) on the 1st edition OS 6-inch map (1837). In a flat garden plot under glass. Large stones were often turned up here during ploughing (Healy 1975, 20). Purportedly the site of St Mary's Convent, founded c.1144 by St. Malachy before being transferred to Grace Dieu c.1195 (Gwynn & Hadcock 1970). No visible trace. • DU008-010003 Round tower
  Description

  Located within St Macullin's graveyard, the round tower forms a detached north-east turret to the 15th century belfry tower at Lusk. It is built of coursed limestone masonry and contains eight floors under a conical roof (H c. 34m). The wall is slightly battered and the thickness of the wall is reduced from the bottom to the top (T 1.4m-0.9m). The tower is entered in the ESE through a doorway which has a plain moulding. A trap door in the interior provides access to the basement of the tower (int. dims.2.2m-2.5m). The interior is lit by narrow slit opes (Healy 1975, 20; Barrow 1975, 65-67, 8:10 (03)). • DU008-010004 Church
  Description

  The medieval W tower which stands on a natural rise in the centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure. The medieval parish church was demolished in the 19th century except for the extant W tower (Leask 1985, 23). The original church was of considerable size with two aisles divided by a seven arched arcade (L c. 50m). The W tower is square in plan, rising to five storeys including a belfry stage which is marked by a cornice. It has projecting corner turrets, the NE formed by the round tower (DU008-010003-). These are battered with stepped battlements. There are arches visible in the exterior which may be built-up openings or relieving arches. The tower is entered from the W end of the present church which was constructed in 1847. Barrel-vault over ground floor with traces of wicker-centring (int. dims.6.4m ESE-WNW, 3.9m NNE-SSW). There are chambers in each angle except the NE and these are lit by plain slit opes. The doorways have adouble-centred, pointed arch with late Medieval hammer-dressing. The first floor is entered through a large pointed arched doorway. Traces of the W gable of the church are visible in the E facing wall. There are chambers in the NW and SW turrets, the latter has a corbelled roof with a ledge below a slit ope. Stairwell in SE turret. The chambers in the SW and NW on the second floor are rectangular with traces of wicker-centring in the vaulted ceiling. There are chambers also off third floor. At belfry stage on the fourth floor are double-light pointed arched windows on all sides. Chambers in NW and SW corners. Access to parapet at this level. Within the tower is a 17th century font, bullaun stone and portion of a fireplace removed from Bremore castle, decorated in false relief with six shields bearing arms surrounding the Annuciation (H 0.52m, Wth 2.05m, T 0.17m); two graveslabs, one commemorates Walter Dermot d. 1538 with a depiction of the Holy Trinity (Hunt 1974, 146; Roe 1979, 140), the other commemorates James Birmingham d. 1637 and is decorated with a relief effigy of an armoured knight and the coat of arms of the Birmingham and Fitzwilliams (Hunt 1974, 146). On the first floor is a Renaissance table tomb decorated in high relief with the effigies of a knight and lady erected in the mid 1580's to the memory of Sir.   Description

  Sub-rectangular in plan, defined by a low stone wall, which has been subject to collapse and repair, the church (DU008-010004) and round tower (DU008-010003) are located on high ground that slopes down to the perimeter. Externally abutted at a substantial lower level by gardens and houses. Contains the Echlin tomb (Sir Robert of Kenure House, Rush 1699-1757). • DU008-010006 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  Lusk is the best example of an early ecclesiastical enclosure in the county. Both inner c.110m x 100m) and middle enclosures (c.250m x 220m) are reflected in street layout and plot boundaries (Aalen 1992, 87). The present Main Street, N portion of the Dublin Road, Church Road and Church Street respect the former boundaries of the early ecclesiastical enclosure. Part of the outer enclosure was identified through test excavation (Licence 01E0872ext.) and preserved in what is now the open space of Chapel Farm housing estate. Archaeological investigation to accommodate road widening along the Church road also identified part of the outer ecclesiastical enclosure which was radiocarbon dated from the early 5th through the 6th century AD. • DU008-010007 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Located in the garden to the rear of Barrack House. Traditionally associated with St Macullin of Lusk. St. Macullin's Well was described in 1958 as; 'a pool c. 5' [1.5m] in diameter in the garden of a house in Lusk Village. There are no devotions now, but water is still taken to bathe sore eyes. Legends: The saint [Macullin] jumped from the round tower [DU008-010003-] to the well; the marks of his knees are on a stone near the well' (Ó Danachair 1958, 73). Holy well described in 1975 as 'hidden from view by a drainpipe, which presumably encloses the water, and is itself covered by slabs of concrete' (Henry A. Wheeler 23/05/1975, SMR File. It has since been built up into the form of a 'wishing well'. It had not been venerated for some time (Healy 1975, 20). • DU008-010008 Sheela-na-gig
  Description

  Unlocated possible sheela-na-gig located inside Lusk Church (DU008-010004-) where it was recorded and described by antiquarian Austin Cooper in 1783 as following; ‘the human features fancifully hideous; the face being seven inches broad, and the head without neck or body, being attached to a pair of kneeling thighs and legs’ (Anon 1914, 253; Guest 1936, 111). This figure was locally known as ‘The Idol’ (Clibborn 1844, 575). According to Guest this figure had been buried 1844 by the Rev. Mr Tyrrell. This event appears to have occurred at least a year earlier in 1843 if not earlier (Freitag 2004, 111). Its current location is unknown. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 28 May 2012

• DU008-010009 Tomb - effigial (present location)
  Description

  Currently housed in the medieval belfry tower at Lusk this effigial chest tomb was commissioned in 1589 by Sir Lucas Dillon of Moymet (d. 1595), the 2nd husband of Marion Sharl (d.1607), to house the remains of her first husband Sir Christopher Barnewall of Turvey (d. 1575). According to the inscription at the east end of the chest Marion “had issu 5 sonnes and 15 dacters by hem.” She married Sir Lucas Dillon, three years after her first husband’s death. The tomb originally stood in the graveyard but was moved indoors for safe-keeping. The chest tomb and effigies in high relief are carved from limestone, possibly sourced from a local quarry. The west and east ends of the chest are devoted to single compositions. The west end bears the arms of Barnewall quarted with those of Sharl, the shield being surmounted by the Barnewall crest. The names Christopher Barnewall and Marion Sharl appear on either side of the heraldic plumes. The north and south sides are divided into three sections by fluted ionic pilasters supporting an arcade of paired rounded arches with a central segmental arch. Within each panel a single armorial shield forms the prominent feature with the central shield dominating in scale and subsidiary shields set in smaller double-arched frames. Small grotesque masks act as corbels supporting the central arch of the end panels. The dedication inscription is carried on the east end of the tomb within an elaborate cartouche.A list of names of the children of Sir Christopher and Marion is carried on a band above the base moulding - possibly added after the tomb was assembled. Above, slightly over life size, the effigies are recumbent, with Marion’s hands folded in prayer, Sir Christopher’s securing an open book against his breastplate. Their heads lie on an embroidered and tasselled cushion which bears the following inscription in raised letters: “Soli Laudes Deo Si Deus Nobiscum Quis Contra Nos – Priase the Lord alone, if the Lord is with us who can be against us”. Their footrests were faithful dogs whose extremities, heads and tails, are now missing. Sir Christopher is clad as a knight in highly ornamented armour showing the influence of fashions derived from Milanese and later German armourers (Jocelyn 1973 156). Bare-headed, his hair and beard are carefully modelled while the detail of his face is abraded. A ruff peeks out the top of his neck and at the wrists. The all over raised ornamentation of curvilinear foliate motifs, four-petal rosettes, and tapering bands and braids is designed to emphasise the distinctive forms of body armour. The gorget (leather or metal collar), paulrone (shoulder plate armor), the breastplate, the tassets (horizontal bands of plate forming a short petticoat), couter (plate protecting the elbow) poleyn (plate protecting the knee), cuisse (plate protecting the upper leg) greaves (plate protecting the lower leg) can all be distinguished. Two opposed motifs are alternatively repeated down the tassets. His sword, attached to the belt rests along his left side, the normal location of weaponry. While the decorated surfaces are busy and the detail sharp and well executed, the overall impression is one of a balanced and harmonious design. Marion is dressed in a loose fitting, long sleeved gown with a broad ruffle at the neck and embroidered collar covering the shoulders with paired braids running under the arms. The sleeves of this garment are very naturalistically modelled. The outer edge of her gown is folded back to reveal a gorgeously embroidered lining decorated with rosettes and scrolls with matching ornamented kirtle. Upon the kirtle is a square pomander which is suspended from the waist on a belt and leather/metal chain. Her head is covered by a French hood, a tight-fitting cap with a jewelled billement ornament and unfortunately the facial details are abraded. It is considered that the masons responsible for the Lusk tomb were trained in and were certainly conversant with the work of some provincial midland or southern English Schools themselves deriving inspiration from Flemish work or Flemish pattern books.   Description

  The medieval parish church of Lusk (DU008-010004-) was demolished in the 19th century except for the extant W tower (Leask 1985, 23). The original church was of considerable size with two aisles divided by a seven arched arcade. The W tower is square in plan, rising to five storeys including a belfry stage which is marked by a cornice. It has projecting corner turrets, the NE formed by the round tower (DU008-010003-). These are battered with stepped battlements. Described by McMahon (1991, 10) as ; 'High up in the south-east corner of the tower is a carved stone head. • DU008-060 Ring-ditch
  Description

  Monitoring of a large scale development in 2002 revealed a possible ring-ditch with several associated deposits of burnt material in sub-circular cut pits (Mc Cabe 2004a, 175). This had rounded terminals opening westwards. There was no evidence for a corresponding bank.
