• DU023-023 Historic town
  Description

  Dalkey is a medieval manorial centre with borough status from the middle of the thirteenth century (McNeill 1950, 113). In 1326 there were 39 burgesses (ibid 195). It was the best deep port close to Dublin and was in use during the thirteenth century (Sweetman 1875-86, I, No. 2671). In the fourteenth century it became a supply centre and depot for ferrying men and goods to assist Edward the I's campaign in Scotland and Wales (D'Alton 1838, 445). In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was a bastion of the Pale and the weekly market and fair were held there (McNeill 1950, 247). The town plan is linear and is based on a single street i.e. Castle Street with a number of laneways which run perpendicular to the street. The market place was held in Castle Street, which expands towards its eastern end. Monitoring of groundworks in 2003 at 46-47 Castle Street exposed medieval deposits containing animal, bird and fish bones. • DU023-023001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated at the W end of the village of Dalkey on the E side of Ulverton Road.  Annotated ‘Site of Castle’ on the 1837 ed. OSi six-inch map.  A castle originally stood  on the N side of Castle Street. It was known as 'Wolverston Castle' after the Stillorgan family who held property in Dalkey in the 17th century. In 1703 John Allen of Stillorgan House (DU023-012001-) paid the sum of £151 to the Trustees of Forefietures of 1688 for the forfeited lands of Dalkey which included the ‘4 Castles & several Cabbins thereon’ which was the ‘Estate of the late King James’ (VRTI NAI Lodge/9/322).  This castle was demolished in the 1840's to provide stone for the building of Tudor House, located 170m to the S of St Mary's R. C. Church in Dalkey (Latham 1983, 5). No visible surface trace. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien

• DU023-023002 Church
  Description

  Situated at the N end of Dalkey town at the junction of Castle Street and Ormeau Dive. The church is located is within a rectangular walled-in graveyard raised above the level of the road. The church is built of coursed granite masonry. The nave walls are tall with high-pitched gables. It is entered through a pointed doorway in S wall, also a low lintelled doorway off-centre in the W gable (int. dims. L 14m, Wth 4m). There is a tomb niche in the S wall and a chamfered granite stoup inside the S door. The interior is lit by a single rounded window in the N wall, a slit ope in the S wall and a double-light W window with traces of tracery. The chancel is later in construction and has limestone jambs. The chancel is entered through a round segmental arch. There is a pointed arched doorway in the S wall. Interior is lit by round-headed windows in N and S walls with a double-light E window with an external hood moulding (int. dims. L 7.9m, Wth 6.7m). This church is associated with St. Begnet and had a chancel added in the late medieval period when it was assigned to Christ Church Catheral and subsequently St. Patricks Cathedral (Turner 1983, 31-32, O'Reilly 1901, 158-161). • DU023-023003 Graveslab
  Description

  Situated at the N end of Dalkey town at the junction of Castle Street and Ormeau Dive. The graveslab is located is within a rectangular walled-in graveyard raised above the level of the road. The graveslab is a 'Rathdown type' and is recorded as being face down by the door in the S wall of the church (DU023-023002-; Ó hÉailidhe 1957, 80-83). It comprises a large slab decorated in relief with a ringed Latin Cross and a cupmark in the centre. Below the shaft is another cupmark within a large circle. At each end of the slab is a group of concentric circles with a central cupmark along both edges of the decorated face are semi-circular loops (L 1.65m, Wth 0.52m, T 0.18m; Ó hÉailidhe 1957, 80, 83, Swords, K. ed. 2009, 94).   Description

A sandstone Latin cross close to the N wall of the church (DU023-023002-), the upper arm is broken (L0.84m, Wth 0.7m, T 0.05m).   Description

  Situated at the N end of Dalkey town at the junction of Castle Street and Ormeau Dive. The cross-slab is located within a rectangular walled-in graveyard raised above the level of the road. A small Latin cross with splayed extremities on a stone in the N wall above a narrow round-headed window, W of the chancel arch of the church (DU023-023002-; O'Reilly 1901, 135, 147-149). • DU023-023010 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated at the NW side of the junction of Castle Street and White's Villas. The tower house is known as 'Goat's Castle', this urban towerhouse served as the Town Hall and is now Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre. The tower is built of roughly coursed granite masonry with dressed stone quoins. The tower house is rectangular in plan, three storied with a vault above the ground floor. A projecting stair tower in the SE corner rises above parapet level. The present entrance off Castle Street is a late round-arched opening in the S wall. The original entrance was in the N side where remains of the original staircase survives. A drawing by Beranger dated 1765 shows the present entrance on the S as a damaged, blocked up doorway and another flat-arched entrance on the E side (Harbison 1998, 77). The ground floor chamber is barrel vaultedon an E-W axis. There are floor corbels visible in the upper NE corner wall. The interior is lit by a deeply splayed embrasure in the E and a lower tall, single ope in the SW. A large fireplace has been inserted into the S wall on the first floor. This room was re-modelled as the council chamber with wood panelling (int. dims. L 10.6m; Wth 5.95m). It is lit by double-light windows in the S wall. The second floor has a round-arched window in the W end. A building, which serves as the parish hall has been built up against the N wall.   Description

  Situated on the W side of White's Villas. Noted as the site of a castle. Known as 'Black Castle' the castle was situated on the site later occupied by the Queens Hotel. It was in use as a billiard room in the late 18th-century (Ball 1906, 1, 77). It was demolished during the 1840's. No visible surface trace. • DU023-023014 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated on the S side of Castle Street next to the RC Church of the Assumption. Known as 'Archibold's Castle', it comprises a rectangular tower house which rises to three storeys with a parapet level. It is built of roughly coursed granite masonry with dressed granite quoins. Entrance is in the W through a round-headed doorway, which is protected by machicolation at parapet level. This opens onto a stone spiral staircase. To the right of the entrance is a long chamber (int. dims. L 8.5m; Wth 4m) lit by later inserted windows in S and E wall. A large recess along the W wall is probably a blocked doorway. There are wall presses in the E and W walls. A lintel over the first floor doorway is a reused graveslab (DU023-023015-). There is a barrel-vault over this floor. The second floor was the main chamber, with a fireplace in the E wall and a garderobe in the NE corner. The interior is lit by narrow, round-headed windows in the W wall and N wall and square opes in the S and E wall. There are slit opes in the NE and SE corners. Wall presses are present either side of the fireplace and in the S wall (O'Flanagan 1941-41, 41-57; Turner 1983, 76-7; Harbison 1998, 79). This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 181/1947).
