Description
Geophysical survey (Licence no. 12R010) undertaken by the Discovery Programme as part of the ‘Late Iron Age and “Roman” Ireland’ project identified archaeological activity towards the summit of a prominent hilltop. This ring ditch (15m diam.) surrounds a central pit. It was partially truncated along its northern limit by quarry activity (Dowling 2013, 9). Description
Geophysical survey (Licence no. 12R010) undertaken by the Discovery Programme as part of the ‘Late Iron Age and “Roman” Ireland’ project identified archaeological activity towards the summit of a prominent hilltop. Located c. 10m north of another ring ditch (DU005-174001-) this monument (8m diam.) appears to have a W entrance. It is truncated to the S by quarry activity (Dowling 2013, 9). - DU005-203 Enclosure
Description
Located at the coastal edge of a large arable field, cropmarks indicate the presence of subsurface remains of a double ditched enclosure (pers. comm. Ian Lennon). The enclosure visible on Google maps imagery (June 2018), comprises a circular inner enclosure (diam. c. 20m) and an irregular oval outer enclosure (diam. c. 45m) defined by a ditch (wth. c. 1.8m) . The enclosures extend beyond the field boundary to the shoreline. Other cropmarks (DU005-204----) in the field may indicate an avenue towards the enclosure. Description
Located with a large arable field adjacent to the coast, cropmarks indicate the presence of subsurface remains of a parallel linear ditches. The parallel ditches visible on Google maps imagery (June 2018), are visible for c.50m and are aligned NNE/SSW. Situated approximately 16m apart the linear ditches average 2m in width. The linear ditches appear to lead towards double ditched enclosure (DU005-203----). Other cropmarks in the field may indicate extensive activity in this area. Description
Located with a large arable field adjacent to the coast, cropmarks indicate the presence of subsurface remains of a parallel triple ditched enclosure, encompassing the townland boundary between Lane and Holmpatrick. The enclosure visible on Google maps imagery (June 2018) comprises a circular inner enclosure (diam. c. 21m) defined by a sub-surface ditch (wth. c. 1.5m ); a middle enclosure (diam. c. 28m) which appears to encompass the townland boundary to the north; and the southern arc of an outer enclosure ditch (diam. c. 40m).
