- DU008-003 Castle - tower house
Description
Currently surrounded by steel fence in open space outside St Catherines' housing estate between Skerries and Loughshinny. The Civil Survey 1654 mentions part of an old castle at Kinure an earlier name for Rush Demesne (Downe Survey) with Thomas Delahide and Robert Walsh as residents (Simington 1945, 61). The lands of Rush and Rush Demesne where the tower house is located were part of a medieval manor vested in the Earl of Ormond from the time of Edward 1st until the year 1641. In 1666 the Duke of Ormond had a confirmation grant of Kinure 594 acres, and his attender the family of Echlin obtained a title in this manor, which descended to Sir Rober Echlin in 1767 (D'Alton 1838, 216-7). This partially restored tower house is square in plan, rising to two storeys with projecting angle towers in the NE and SW. It is built of coursed limestone masonry. Entrance in the NE, formerly through dressed round-arched doorway, which has been removed since 1979. Another entrance in the SW. The ground floor has a vaulted roof with a fireplace inserted the E wall and wall presses in the N wall either side of a single light window (int. dims. L 6.9m; Wth 4.4m; wall T 1.1m). A stone spiral staircase provides access to first floor (Mc Dix 1899, 60; Healy 1975, 20). According to the structural survey, the extensive vegetation growth on the outside and the collapse of wall facings on the inside will lead to gradual degradation of the walls (Nolan 2011). The context of the monument has been further compromised by the insertion of a railing and playing field in close proximity to the towerhouse. - DU008-004001 Church
Description
Situated in a raised position within a walled graveyard off the coast road between Skerries and Loughshinny Village. This is a plain, oblong building aligned E-W, with both gables extant (L 13.80m, W 4.60m). Built of coursed limestone masonry. There is a single bellcote covered in ivy over west gable. Entered through opposed pointed arch openings towards western end of nave. The east window has traces of 15th century tracery and an external hood moulding. There is a plain window in the south wall of nave with jambs of tufa (Healy 1975, 20). According to the structural survey there is evidence of a small area of wash out of mortar at the base of the north wall. There is extensive cracking on the west gable wall which is probably due to subsidence caused by the proximity of graves (Nolan 2011). - DU008-004002 Graveyard
Description
This graveyard is located in a raised position off the coast road between Skerries and Loughshinny Village. It encloses an oval area (dims. E-W 60m, N-S 40m). The graveyard was extended to the north east in the 1930's. and the walls have been rebuilt with concrete breeze blocks. An area in the east of the graveyard is known as 'Stranger's bank'. The ground slopes up slightly to the remains of a church (DU008-004001-). Grave memorials dating from the 18-19th century including that of John Connors of Rush, an 18th century smuggler known as 'Jack the Bachelor' (Fingal Historic Graves Project 2008). - DU008-005 Ritual site - holy well
Description
Annotated 'St. Catherine's Well' on 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map where it is shown on the demesne lands of Kenure Park which stands 400m to SSW. Castle (DU008-003----) 100m to N, medieval church ruins (DU008-004001-) and graveyard (DU008-004002-) 55m to E. Situated today in open space of St Catherine's housing estate S of a stream that runs through the former grounds of Kenure Park. Folklore collected from Rush School recorded the following details about this holy well; 'In the wood there was a well called St Catherine's Well. This well has long been closed and at present its site is unknown. A new well was opened some distance away and bears the same name' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0786, Page 39; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4498364/4384260/4508857). A second story collected from the same school recorded that; 'Saint Catherines Well is situated on the North side of Kenure Park close to entrance gate on the Skerries Road. It is on the East side of the Avenue close to a small river which runs through the Park. Some people believe that the original St Catherines Well was on the West side of the Avenue opposite the present well. The well was attached to the old Monastery and it is on its ground. There is a drinking vessel at the well and people passing often stop and take a drink. There are steps of large flat stones leading down to it as it is down in a hollow. There is a door on the well made of wood and wire, and it can be opened by anyone desiring to have a drink' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0786, Pages 60-1; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4498364/4384286). This natural spring well lies in a hollow in the field marked by a single tree. No longer venerated (Ó Danachair 1958, 73). The well was enclosed by concrete breeze blocks for safety reasons in the 1980s. In 2013 several of the blocks were removed. The well once served as a domestic well for Kenure House (Skyvova 2005, 56). See attached photo taken by Caoimhín Ó Danachair, courtesy of and © National Folklore Collection, UCD.
