- DU012-094001 Cremation pit
Description
This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, the earliest phase was identified as a single pit (0.5m diam.) that yielded over 70 sherds of Western Neolithic pottery alongside fragments of burnt bone (Halliday 2008, 21). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015
- DU012-094002 Enclosure
Description
This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, the primary stratigraphic enclosure of the early medieval period is rectangular in plan (16.6m x 11m). Truncated by circular enclosures (DU012-094003-) to the N and E a radiocarbon date of 898-966 AD was attained from the upper fill of the enclosure ditch (Halliday 2008, 23). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015
- DU012-094003 Enclosure
Description
This monument was partially excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this circular enclosure (c. 28m diam.) truncated the E end of an earlier rectangular enclosure (DU012—094002-). The ditch varies in width between 5.5-6.2m in width and up to 1.9m in depth with a total of twenty-six fills. A rich organic deposit was identified throughout the entire ditch which included fragments of wood such as barrel hoops, a possible barrel stave and sharpened stakes. A probable bridge consisting of four large postholes was identified directly in line with a metalled surface. Two radiocarbon dates were recovered from the base of the enclosure ditch. An apple sample attained a date of 1010 +/- 34 AD while an oak sample attained a date of 509 +/- 31 AD. A discrepancy of 500 years has been ascribed to ‘old wood’ effect (Halliday 2008, 23). The E quadrant of the site was preserved in situ within open space. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015
- DU012-094004 Enclosure
Description
This monument was partially excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this circular enclosure (c. 18.5m diam.) was located internal to enclosure (DU012-094002-). The ditch varies in width between 3.5m – 4.7m in width and a causeway (2.4m wide) was identified to the S, directly opposite the bridge of the outer enclosure. Two radiocarbon dates indicating an early 12th century AD date were recovered from the basal fill of the ditch. (Halliday 2008, 28). The E quadrant of the site was preserved in situ within open space. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015
- DU012-094005 Enclosure
Description
This monument was excavated (Licence no. 04E1604) in advance of development. A multi-period site, this sub-rectangular enclosure (10.5m x 0.3m) was located to the SW of outer enclosure (DU012-094003-) although was interpreted as contemporary with inner enclosure (DU012-0003). There was a concentration of pits and postholes in the internal NW corner. A copper alloy fastener or brooch was recovered from the fill of the enclosure ditch. A radiocarbon date of 1109-1173 AD was obtained from the ditch fill. The presence of numerous cattle heads indicated butchery and potential craft-working may have been undertaken here (Halliday 2008, 32). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 5 February 2015
