• GA083-012 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In gently undulating farmland. Named 'Caher or Circle of Stones' on the OS Fair Plan. When initially visited by the Survey in 1983, this poorly preserved circular cashel (diam. 52.5m) was defined by a drystone wall from N through E to SW and elsewhere by a grassed-over stony bank. A field boundary, with a modern trackway on its E side, cut through the monument from N to S. There was an entrance gap (Wth 2.7m) at E. A subrectangular area defined by grassed-over collapse in the SE quadrant may have been one of two ‘enclosures’ noted by McCaffrey (1952, 111, no. 6) in each half of the interior. Some earthworks were also noted in the field immediately to the SE. However, as a result of field clearance, most of the cashel wall, apart from a section between ENE to ESE (L 15m), and the earthworks have been levelled.   Description

  On the crest of a ridge in farmland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 112, no. 9) as a much-denuded circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 40m). Apart from a low bank which survives from NW to NE, no visible surface trace survives. The bank is overlain by a later field wall.   Description

  Within the NE sector of an enclosure (GA083-015002-). This irregularly shaped graveyard (33.3m E-W; 27m N-S), in fair condition, is defined along the N and E sides by the bank of the surrounding enclosure. No visible surface trace of an enclosing element survives elsewhere. In the interior are numerous graves, aligned E-W, marked by small set stones, similar to those found in children's burial grounds. Some rectangular stone-lined grave plots are also evident. Finally, two inscribed grave-markers dedicated to adults, dated 1890 and 1899, lie near W and E limits respectively.   Description

  On an E-facing slope in grassland. This subrectangular enclosure (50m N-S; 43.5m E-W), in fair condition, is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. A scarp forms the inner enclosing element along the E side. The fosse survives from SW through N to NE and is for the most part filled with field-clearance rubble. The outer bank survives only along the N side. A burial ground (GA083-015001-) occupies the NE quadrant of the interior. • GA083-016 Souterrain
  Description

  Souterrain on a rise in pastureland. This drystone-built L-shaped souterrain (L over 21m) consists of three chambers connected by two drop-hole creeps. It was discovered in 1982 during building operations and was subsequently surveyed (Buckley and O'Brien 1985-6, 139-42). The first chamber (L 6.5m; Wth 1.6m; H 1.5m) ran SSE-NNW. Access was gained at NNW end at a point where roof lintels had collapsed. The drop-hole creep (L 2m; Wth 0.7m; H 1m max.) extended off NNE side and lead to the second chamber (L 6.5m; Wth 1.4m. H 1.8m) which ran ENE-WSW. Another drop-hole creep (L 2.1m; Wth 0.9m; H 0.75m) at its ENE end lead to the third chamber (L 4m; Wth 1.8m; H 1.65m), which was similarly aligned.   Description

  In low-lying pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 113, no. 13) as an 'Earthen fort', which was very flattened and denuded, this poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 43m) is defined by a low bank of grassed-over stones. An irregular scarp runs across the monument from N to S; the area to the E of it is 1m lower than that to the W. A low circular mound of earth and stone (diam. 4.5m) is visible in the NE quadrant. A grassed-over stony bank, possibly associated, extends from the enclosing element at SW and runs NW for c. 55m. A trackway cuts across the monument from NE to SE.   Within the SW quadrant of the enclosure (GA083-020----). Noted by McCaffrey (1952, 113, no. 14) and described as a rectangular 'enclosure' (15.5m E-W; 7.6m N-S) defined by a grass-covered bank (Wth 0.9m; int. H 0.36m; ext. H 0.9m); annotated 'A' on his site plan. On inspection in June 1983 only the foundations were evident. Another structure (GA083-020002-) was noted in the NE quadrant.   Description

  Within the NE quadrant of an enclosure (GA083-020----). Noted by McCaffrey (1952, 113, no. 14) and annotated 'B' on his site plan; described as an 'enclosure' (9.7m N-S; 5.1m E-W) defined by a grass-covered bank (Wth 1m; int. H 0.79m; ext. H 0.79m) with a doorway (Wth 1.2m) towards the S end of the W side. On inspection in June 1983 only the foundations were evident. A possible house site (GA083-020001-) lies in the SW quadrant. • GA083-021 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  In flat open pastureland. This poorly preserved rectangular castle (ext. dims. 10.3m E-W; 7.2m N-S; wall T 1m), which is heavily overgrown with ivy, is at least two storeys high. The S and W walls are the best preserved walls; most of the W half of the N wall and the N end of the E wall are gone. No trace of the doorway survives. The remains of a centrally located splayed slit window are visible in the S wall and traces of opes at 1st-floor level in the frayed NE end of the N wall and centrally in the S wall may also be the remains of windows. A wall recess is visible at ground-floor level in the N end of the W wall. The interior is subdivided by a later wall which blocks the slit window in the S wall. Traces of possible angle towers (max. H 0.5m) are visible at the NE (>3.85m N-S; 2.9m N-S) and SW (c. 2.9m N-S; c. 2.1m E-W) corners, however, that at the SW corner is not bonded into the castle wall. An ope in the SW corner of the castle wall may mark a doorway that accessed it. The tower at the NE corner is less clear but it is noticeable that its S extent coincides with the frayed N end of the E wall of the castle. It is recorded that ‘Cloughmeel (recté Cloghmweel) was once a convent’ (O'Flanagan 1972a, Vol. 1, 481). The castle may have subsequently been used as a residence by nuns. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 4.3m) at SW. A field wall cuts through the monument from N to S. To the E of it, apart from a very slight rise in the field level, no visible surface trace survives. • GA083-079 Concentric enclosure
  Description

  In an area of pastureland and outcropping limestone sloping to the SW. The M6 motorway is immediately to the S of the field in which the monument lies. This subcircular concentric enclosure (max. dims. c. 70m N-S; c. 65m E-W) is not marked on the OS maps but is clearly visible on aerial photographs (https://binged.it/2oxnmh0 last accessed 29 March 2017) and it was previously noted by Sutton (2009, 187). It is defined by two banks of earth and stone with a wide space between the banks. The inner bank (base Wth 2.5m; top Wth 1.16m; int. H 0.17m; ext. H 0.19m) is visible from ENE to S to SW. No visible surface trace is evident from SW to N to ENE where the monument is densely overgrown with thorn bushes. There is no trace of a fosse. The outer bank (base Wth 3.35m; top Wth 1.25m; int. H 0.23m; ext. H 0.16m) survives as flat spread of earth and grass-covered boulders and is visible from ENE to S to WNW. It is cut by a field wall at WNW and ENE and to the N of the wall it is difficult to follow its line due to dense overgrowth. The area between the banks is generally broad and flat (Wth 13.3m). A possible causewayed entrance feature (Wth 1.9m) is visible between the banks at E. It is defined by two low banks of grass-covered boulders; the S bank (base Wth 3.1m; top Wth 1m; int. 0.19m; ext. H 0.18m) is more well-defined than the N bank (base Wth 2.62m; top of Wth 1.27m; int. H 0.14m; ext. H 0.08m). Most of the interior of the monument is densely overgrown with thorn bushes and a possible hollow or pit, also overgrown, is evident in the W sector. Traces of a field wall associated with a possible field system (GA083-079001-) extend from the outer bank at S. An enclosure lies c. 85m to the SW.   Description

  In an area of pastureland and exposed limestone sloping to the SW. A series of poorly preserved field walls visible on aerial photographs (https://binged.it/2oxnmh0 last accessed 29 March 2017) may be part of a possible field system associated with a concentric enclosure (GA083-079----) and an enclosure (GA083-080----). Though they do not form any coherent pattern a number of meandering and straight lengths of walls are visible over an area c. 300m ENE-WSW by 220m N-S. Most are visible in the field in which the enclosures are located but one stretch is also visible in the field to the N of the concentric enclosure. The walls are defined by spreads of tumbled grass-covered boulders. One section of walling (Wth 2.9m; H 0. 24m) extends southwards (L c. 40m) from the concentric enclosure then veers north-westwards (L c. 100m). Traces of walls also extend from the enclosure at ENE (Wth 2.45m) and SE. Another levelled field wall, running roughly N-S across the field, is visible immediately to its W.   Description

  In an area of pastureland and outcropping limestone sloping to the SW. The M6 motorway runs immediately to the S of the field in which the monument lies. This subcircular enclosure (40.2m N-S; 37.4m E-W) is not marked on the OS maps but it is clearly visible on aerial photographs (https://binged.it/2oxnmh0 last accessed 29 March 2017) and it was previously noted by Sutton (2009, 187). It is defined by a bank of earth and stone (base Wth 3.2m; top Wth 1.3m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.3m) from SW to N to SE. A small pit has been dug against its external face at N. At SE the bank is overgrown with thorn bushes and at SW it is defined by a broad tumbled spread of grass-covered boulders (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.24m; ext. H 0.26m). There is no visible trace of a fosse. The interior slopes steeply to the S. A hut site (GA083-080001-) is visible in the NW quadrant. Meandering field walls associated with a possible field system (GA083-80001-) extend off it at NE and SE. Another levelled field wall, running roughly N-S across the field, is visible immediately to its W. A concentric enclosure (GA083-079----) lies c. 85m to the NE.
