  Description

  In a level area within an industrial zone and with restricted access. A circular overgrown and inaccessible area (diam. c. 28m) defined by a low overgrown earthen bank (H c. 0.8m). There is some erosion of the bank at NE. A mound of earth is piled against the external face of the bank at S. A concrete yard extends to the external base of the bank. The rath is indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on the 1846 and 1893-4 OS 6-inch maps.   Description

• KE067-013001 Souterrain
  Description

  A small hole 0.48m in diameter had opened up on the eastern of enclosure (KE067-013----). The hole was 1.18m deep and dropped down into a low, narrow dry stone built passage which runs in a north-south direction. The upper 0.6m of the depth of the opening comprises topsoil and gravel overburden which rests on the souterrain. Entry was not possible as the opening into the stone built passage was only 0.35m by 0.45m. Intact lintels are just visible on the north and south sides of the opening while the stone built passage was only 0.44 high based on visual inspection and approximately 0.58m wide at base. • KE067-014 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the edge of a sharp fall of ground down to the valley of the Woodford River. The E portion of the rath is truncated by a N-S field boundary. The interior (diam. 28m N-S; dim. 18m E-W) is defined by a scarp (H 0.45m) along the S and W arcs and by a partially levelled grass-covered bank (Wth 13m; int. H 0.47m; ext. H 0.98m) along the N arc. Darker soil noted at the base of the scarp may be evidence for a fosse. The interior slopes gently down to the E. The rath is indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. On the 1893-4 OS 6-inch map it is indicated as a circular raised area (diam. c. 25m) with the E arc incorporated into the field boundary system. • KE067-015 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a SE-facing slope, on the W bank of the Woodford River. A circular area (33m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6.7m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.6m), with deciduous trees on top, SW-SE and by an eroded scarp (Wth 4m; H 2.2m) SSE-SW. Traces of an external fosse (Wth 2.6m; D 0.4m), largely covered with overgrowth, are evident SSE-NNE. Stone facing is evident on its internal face ENE-SE. The interior, which is under pasture, slopes gently down to the SE where it is raised (H 2.2m) to compensate for the hillslope.   Description

  In pasture, on a SW-facing slope with views to Mangerton Mountain. A circular area (43m NE-SW; 42m NW-SE) defined by the remains of an earthen bank (Wth 9m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.8m) SE-NE and by a scarp (H 0.45m) NE-SE. The fosse, S-NE, is substantial where it is skirted by the townland boundary S-NNW and is shallower (D 0.45m) NNW-NE. A possible outer bank is evident as a low rise along the N arc. The interior, which has been slightly raised to compensate for the hillslope, slopes down gently to the SW. • KE067-120 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  On a SW-facing slope, within an industrial estate. Archaeological monitoring of foundation trenches during the construction of a building revealed 'a linear burnt feature' which was subsequently excavated (McCarthy and Quinn 2002, 146-7). Excavation revealed a subrectangular feature (2.63m x 1.64m; D 1m) containing four separate fills. The primary fill (D 0.04-0.25m) of silty sand with flecks of charcoal was sealed with a deep layer (D 0.49m) of compacted white, silty sand containing small amounts of lime and charcoal. Above this was a thin lens (0.04-0.06m) of charcoal within a loose, silty sand matrix. The uppermost layer (D 0.14m) consisted of a stony sediment with several large fragments of charcoal. The base and sides of the feature were orange to yellow in colour, owing to a high level of oxidation. No datable material finds were recovered during the excavation. The excavators concluded that the contents of the layers suggests activity associated with burning: the charcoal indicates that wood was used as fuel while the lime in the second layer may indicate industrial activity (ibid. 147). Two charred wood samples from the excavation were found to contain oak (Quercus spp.) (McKeown 2000).   Description

  One of two pits (see KE067-121001-), c. 2m apart, which were revealed during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for an extension to Ballyspillane industrial estate (Lynch 2004, 223). Excavation of this subcircular pit (Wth 0.4m; D 0.17m) revealed that it contained charcoal with significant deposits of rounded stones and the excavator suggests that it may have held a wooden post and may have been associated with a rath (KE067-014----) c. 150m to the SE (ibid.). • KE067-133 Enclosure
  Description

  In improved pasture, on the upper portion of a SW-facing slope; Good views to Killarney lakes. No visible surface trace of a monument at location of co-ordinates provided. Sub-oval area (dims. 18m N-S; 11m E-W) is located 55m to NE and is defined by an earth and stone bank (H c. 1.4m) SW->W->N and enclosed by thicket of vegetation (H c. 1.5m) N->E->SE. Field boundary (long axis NW-SE) defines monument to S. Interior is covered in dense growth of furze. Upon limited investigation within, a number of small piles of stone were noted. This is not fulacht fia material but could feasibly be field clearance, some form of cairn or perhaps a childrens’ burial ground. This oval area is specifically cordoned off from rest of field. Reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as an extant mound/fulacht fia. Although there is no visible surface trace of a fulacht fia at this location, the enclosed feature located c. 55m to NE is likely to have been the intended monument seen upon aerial photography.   Description

  In improved pasture, with numerous surface undulations, on a SW-facing slope. Curvilinear scarp (Wth 3.5m; H 0.25m) located c. 50m to WNW. This is traceable upon modern aerial photography (OSi 2005 and Bing 2013). Reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as the cropmark of an enclosure. There are traces of an extant curvilinear scarp evident upon the field surface which corresponds to a curvilinear anomaly evident upon modern aerial photography (ibid).
