• KD004-017 Castle - motte
  Description

  In tillage, at the top of a moderately steep W-facing slope overlooking the River Blackwater c. 200m to the W, and with excellent views in all directions. An ecclesiastical site (KD004-018----) lies c. 40m to the S. A tall, fairly steep-sided, oval shaped, grass and beech tree covered, earthen mound (H 4.7m at S-8m at N; ext. diams. 36m E-W; 31.5m N-S) has a dished, sub circular-shaped upper surface (diams. 8.3m E-W; 7m N-S) which is retained by a dry-stone revetment, two courses of which survive at W (H 0.35m; traceable L 2m). A fairly broad berm (Wth1.8-2.5m), mid-way up the side of the site, girdles the monument from N-E-S. In 1986 a shallow fosse (D 0.1m; Wth 2m) was noted around the base (SMR file), but it is no longer visible because of the passage of farm machinery across this area. The OSL (Herity 2002, 30) recorded the former existence of 'an old castle (KD004-019----) beside the moat ...'. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

• KD004-018001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a gentle W-facing slope in tillage, with a motte (KD004-017----) c. 40m to the N. The interior contains a possible church site (KD004-018002-), and incorporates the W limits of a later graveyard (KD004-018003-). A C-shaped area (dims. 47.5m N-S; traceable L 29 E-W), open to the E, is defined by a low, broad, inner earthen bank (Wth 5.1-5.5m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.8m) and by a shallow, flat-bottomed, outer fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.4m), both of which are truncated by ploughing at S. (It's possible that this feature is part of an 'outer' bailey associated with the motte (KD004-017----) c. 25m to the N, however its orientation 'away' from the motte might suggest otherwise.)   The OSL (Herity 2002, 30) record that, ' … there is an old graveyard in which my informant said he saw the ruins of an old church but of which not a vestige now remains'. In a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-018001-) which incorporates the W end of a later graveyard (KD004-018003-). No visible surface trace survives.   Description

  Partly incorporated into a possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (KD004-018001-). A D-shaped area (int. diam. 28m E-W) with straight W side (L c. 18m) is defined by a broad, deep ditch (max Wth 7.4m; max D 2m) and a low, narrow, external earthen bank (Wth 0.8m; ext. H 0.4m) NW-E-SW, and by a low scarp (H 0.9m) along the W, from where two concentric arcs of wooden fencing extend the burial limits W (L 19m E-W) into the interior of the older enclosure (KD004-018001-). Legible grave markers commemorate burials from the late 17th century to the late-20thC. See Cullen and O'Leary (1999, 66-69) for plan and inventory of burials.   Description

  According to O'Leary (1999, 59), 'There is within the confines of the graveyard (KD004-018003-) the octagonal head of an ancient limestone font', and Morrin (1999, 62) notes, 'It's outer circumference is 72" (c.1.83m), diameter 24" (c.0.61m) and height 13"' (c.0.33m), and shows a painting of the font executed by K. • KD009-002 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Shown on the 1st ed. (1838) of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (est. max. diam. c. 40m) defined by a field boundary, with a tree-covered interior. One of four enclosures (the other three being rectangular - max. dims. L c. 50m Wth c. 40m), all tree-covered and fairly regularly spaced (distances apart 100m, 100m and 200m) which form a NE-SW landscape feature-line along the hilltop, possibly associated with Newtown House c. 1400m to the S. Near the top of a long, gentle, E-facing pasture slope. A very poorly preserved, circular area (int. diam. 28m) is defined by a low scarp (H 0.2-0.4m) SSE-W-NW and is clear of tree cover. The field boundary indicated on the current OS 6-inch map (1911) running NW-SE across the site has been removed. May be the remains of a subsequently landscaped ringfort?   Description

  'Old Windmill' depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map, annotated as 'Windmill (in Ruins)' on current edition. No surface remains visible of windmill on Digital Globe aerial photograph.
