Description
On a prominent esker on the southern outskirts of Kilkenny City. Human remains were found during quarrying in 1969 with further burials (KK019-105001-) coming to light in 1975. The burials were all inhumations in a very disturbed context. One shallow pit containing a partly articulated skeleton was aligned WNW-ESE. A small circular mound (KK019-105----), noted on the surface of the quarry, proved to be a modern landscape feature with disarticulated bones from the surrounding graves incorporated in the mound material. (Ryan, M. 1975 Gallowshill. Mound. S 6055. Available at: http://www.excavations.ie [accessed 11 February 2013]). Testing in the area in 2005 failed to uncover anything of archaeological interest. Description
On the summit of Gallows Hill. Indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). This was inspected by the National Museum of Ireland in November 1975 and described as a small barrow-like mound which proved to be a fairly modern (landscaping) feature (Ryan 1975-6). The small mound had been raised on the site of a cemetery of extended, unaccompanied single burials (KK019-034----) of unknown date (ibid.). Disarticulated bones (KK019-105001-) derived from the surrounding graves were incorporated in the material of the mound (ibid.). Other burials (KK019-034----) had been found in the sand pit c. 130m to the E in 1969. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 19 October 2020
