- KK019-013 Enclosure
Description
A circular enclosure (diam. c. 44m) identified as the cropmark of a fosse on an aerial photograph (GSI S483, 1973-7) and also visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth Pro, 21 April 2019). It is not indicated on the 1st (1839-40) ed. OS 6-inch map or subsequent 1945-6 revision. The satellite image suggests there may be an entrance in the NW quadrant. A field boundary with a farm roadway along its W side, runs NNW-SSE through the NE-E sector of the enclosure. See attached Google Earth image (imagery date 21 April 2019). Description
Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of St John's parish depicts a house close to the E edge of Neworchard townland with a trees drawn to the N, W and S of the house and annotated 'orchard' (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The terrier accompanying the parish map lists 'Michael Radgett' as the proprietor in 1640, and relates that, 'In New orchard [there is] a good orchard' (ibid.). The house and orchard correspond to a house and farmyard indicated at this location on the 1st (18339-40) ed. OS 6-inch map and on the 1945-6 revision it is named, 'New Orchard'. Description
In relatively flat terrain. An aerial photograph (GB89.Q.25, 13 July 1989) shows a cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) defined by two concentric fosses. The outer ring road of Kilkenny City, the N77, completed in 2007, runs through the monument. - KK019-117 Ring-ditch
Description
On the NE outskirts of Kilkenny City, a river flows southward into the Nore c. 270m to the E, fomerly in tillage. An aerial photograph (GB89.Q.26, 13 July 1989) shows cropmark of a small circular ring-ditch (diam. c. 8m). Subsequently the Ashfield house estate was built over the monument. An enclosure (KK019-121----) also identified as a cropmark lies c. 200m to the SE, possibly associated with a relic field system (KK019-123----).
