  Description

  In elevated pasture on slight E facing slope, 200m N of enclosure (LI012-054----) and 300m E of the townland boundary with Faha Demesne. Curving field boundary visible from S through W to NW may incorprate the original enclosing bank, elsewhere the monument has been levelled. Depicted on both the 1840 OS 6-inch map and 1897 OS 25-inch map as a circular shaped area (approx. dims. 37m N-S) enclosed by a bank (approx. Wth 7.5m), incorporated into a field boundary from S-W to NW and a limekiln was built into SW quadrant. Visible as an overgrown upstanding enclosure on OSi aerial photograph taken 1995, no trace of monument visible on subsequent aerial images. • LI012-054 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture on slight E facing slope, 200m S of enclosure (LI012-053----) and 264m E of the townland boundary with Faha Demesne. Partially levelled monument depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as an oval shaped area (approx. diam. 43m NW-SE) defined by a scarp. Depicted on the 1897 OS 25-inch map as a sub-circular shaped area (approx. int. diam. 30m E-W; ext. 43m NW-SE) enclosed by a bank (Wth 8m), incorporated into post 1700 field boundary at SSW. A field boundary intersects the site at SSW to W and a lane intersects bank at SSW to SSE. Google Earth orthoimage taken 2019 shows partial remains of the monument still visible today, S of farmyard, as a sub-circular shaped area defined by overgrown enclosing element from N through E to S and remains of field boundary along the line of enclosing element from SSW to W. • LI012-055 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture on slight NE-facing slope, cashel (LI012-141----) immediately to NE. Present remains consist of a circular-shaped area (diam. 29m N-S) enclosed by a stone bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.85m; base Wth 1.23m). The interior is undulating with rubble from field clearance, bank disturbed at SW. Annotated 'Knockanabausa Fort' on both the 1840 OS 6-inch map and the 1897 OS 25-inch map. The 1897 OS 25-inch map depicts the monument as an oval shaped area enclosed by a bank, with trees planted in the interior with post-1700 field boundary intersects the monument at S and ESE. • LI012-127 Standing stone
  Description

  In undulating pasture on a slight NE facing slope 60m S of a stream that marks the townland boundary with Cloghkeating. Not depicted on either the 1840 0S 6-inch map or the 1897 25-inch OS map. Identified as Site C by Celie O’Rahilly, archaeologist, Limerick Corporation, when it was described as following; ‘Consists of a large megalithic-type boulder in the field boundary. Could simply be the result of field–clearance but equally could be a boulder burial. There is a second one further east also in the field boundary. Need closer examination from the north side.’ Site inspected in 2001 and described as an upright rectangular-shaped limestone boulder (H 1.7m, W 1.35m) in a drystone boundary wall. There are no support stones or decoration. Possible glacial erratic incorporated into field boundary. Not visible today on Google Earth orthoimage taken 2020. • LI012-141 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture on slight NE-facing slope, immediately NE of cashel (LI012-055----). Present remains consist of a circular-shaped area (diam. 22m) enclosed by a stone bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.85m; base Wth 12.30m) with causewayed (L 6m; Wth. 0.95m) stone lined entrance (Wth 5m) at SW. The interior is undulating and strewn with rocks. Not depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map the monument is depicted on the 1897 OS 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped tree plantation. • LI012-145 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Identified during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping associated with the Bord Gáis Éireann, Barnakyle to Coonagh West gas pipeline. Excavated under licence no. 02E1697 by Ken Wiggins (Wiggins 2003), the results were summarised as following; ‘A spread of charcoal-rich clay and burnt stone material was identified, measuring 3.6m (north– south) by 1.9m with a maximum thickness of 0.1m. The spread occupied a slight depression in the surface of the subsoil. A substantial pit/trough was sealed beneath the burnt spread. There were two other pits and a field drain of later date on the site. The trough was 1.6m in diameter and 0.35m deep. The fill was a mixture of burnt stone and charcoal-rich clay. Two later pits, F1 and F3, were cut into the centre of the burnt spread. F1 was 0.83m long, 0.48m wide and 0.16m deep. F3 was 1m long, 0.68m wide and 0.38m deep. Both were filled with grey/brown, topsoil-type clay. A drain, up to 0.2m wide, was aligned north-east/south-west through the centre of the burnt spread. It was filled with grey sediment and stones. No artefacts were discovered on the site, which appears from the burnt stone material to form the remains of a heavily ploughed-out fulacht fiadh’ (www.excavations.ie; Wiggins 2004, 307-8).
