  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 A three-storeyed rectangular building of limestone and greywacke rubble with some well-cut limestone quoins. It was originally larger with a further building at the N side of the standing remains. The ground floor has a barrel vault running E-W and a doorway in W end of the N wall. The doorway has hammer-dressed blocks of limestone for its jambs with a semi-circular arch of greywacke and limestone. There was an opening in the S wall (Wth c. 0.9m), now blocked, which has punch-dressed limestone jambs and is the remains of the original outer doorway, the one in the N wall being an internal opening which led to the now-missing portion of the building. A square-shaped murder hole, now blocked at first-floor level, can be observed over the original entrance. A blocked window can be seen immediately to the E of the N doorway but it is evident that the ope was made in the wall after the destruction of the N portion of the building. Access to the first-floor must have been gained from the ground-floor level in the now completely destroyed N part of the building, possibly at the NE angle of the present structure where there appears to be the central pillar for a spiral staircase. There is a fireplace in the W gable at first-floor level, probably a later insertion, and the remains of a stairwell in the NE angle which ascended to the second floor. The stairwell spirals anticlockwise to the second floor, giving access to the formerly existing N portion, and some of the corbels to carry it can be seen in the N wall. There is a single-splayed ope at first-floor level in the E wall of the NE angle, and a semi-circular recessed area which contains the garderobe with a chute (0.3m sq.), the exit of which is now blocked at ground-floor level. The recess has a max. depth of c. 0.6m and a height of c. 1.35m. In the N face of the N wall there are the remains of another fireplace which belonged to the now-destroyed N portion of the building. There is a third fireplace at second-floor level in the E gable, while a further one appears to be inserted at this level in the W wall which effectively blocked off a simple slit ope that can be observed from the outside. The second floor was wooden and was supported on beams set into wall recesses. There are broken-out openings in the E and S walls which were presumably originally window opes. The college was built in 1487 by Walter Verdon (Tempest 1952b, 145) as a residence for the chantry chaplains, but later alterations took place on the N side in the sixteenth century and in modern times when it was used for storage, probably for grain. Date of upload/revision: 28 June 2012 Revised by: Claire Breen The medieval remains incorporated into the present St Mary's Church of Ireland building are probably those of a church founded as a parish church at the beginning of the thirteenth century. The present structure consists of a nave, chancel, S aisle and tower. Two religious houses are recorded in Ardee, the Hospital of St John the Baptist (Fratres Cruciferi) established in 1207 and the Carmelite friary from later in the thirteenth century (Bradley 1984a, 285). According to Bradley (1984a, 283-5), the present remains are not on the site of either foundation. Grose (1791, pl. 41) illustrates the building prior to its reconstruction in 1812, and although it is obviously inaccurate in some respects his drawing clearly shows a ruined tower at the W, a vaulted ground floor, and only the upper storeys of the E wall remaining, with windows at the belfry and ringing stages. The nave was gabled and roofed while the north aisle was unroofed, had a doorway with a round-headed arch and three large rectangular window opes. The only obvious medieval remains now are the arcade of four arches which divides the nave from the S aisle, a piscina incorporated in the pier near the altar, and a recess with stairway in the E gable which led to the loft over the rood screen. A portion of the medieval tower probably survives within the modern structure but this is not obvious. E of the present chancel is a very ruined building which may be the remains of the medieval chancel, or at least indicate its original plan. The doorway to the stairwell in the NE corner of the S aisle, which led to the rood loft, has a single rounded arch stone of punch-dressed limestone, indicating that the rood screen was late medieval in date. The jamb stones are rebated and the arch stones are treated in the same manner, presumably to allow a door to sit into the ope flush with the wall surface. A rectangular font of limestone (LH101-101010-) at the W end of the nave is decorated at one angle with a biting beast's head and at the other three with a foliate design. Between the decorated angles chisel marks cover the plain surfaces. It is probably late medieval in date. (CLAJ 1943, 200-3; Bradley 1984a, 280-3)

  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Fragment of cross discovered in the grounds of St Mary's Church and erected on a concrete base and shaft. All that remains is part of a limestone disc head with one arm. The other arm, the top, the shaft and base are missing. A simple Crucifixion scene with canopy over is on the W face, the other side having a depiction of the Virgin and Child under an ogee-headed canopy. The cross, according to King (1983, 213), probably dates to the sixteenth century. (CLAJ 1943, 203, pl. I; King 1983, 210-14)

  Description

  A rectangular font of limestone (H 0.47m; Wth 0.6m; T 0.58m; internal diam 0.43m; internal D 0.2m). Originated in Mansfieldstown and is now located at the W end of the nave of St. Mary's church (LH017-101007-). Decorated at one angle with a biting beast's head and at the other three with a foliate design. Between the decorated angles chisel marks cover the plain surfaces.   Description

  Two gravemarkers in St. Mary's graveyard (LH017-101025-). One to William Hynes is possibly of seventeenth century date. It is a limestone slab (H 0.6m, Wth 0.38m, T 0.05m), gabled on top with an incised Celtic cross and a small Latin cross on top of the circle. To the E of the church (LH017-101007-) there is a gravemarker (LH017-101027-) of uncertain date set in the ground. It is a crude limestone slab (H 0.8m, Wth 0.4m) with an incised Latin cross.   There is a crudely rounded granite fragment (H 0.36m; Wth 0.77m; D 0.3m) of a voussoir on the ground behind the N side of the W façade of St. Mary's Church. Beside the voussoir fragment, and almost completely buried in the ground, there is what appears to be a hexagonal granite piscina.   Description

  Terraced five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1840. Integral carriage arch to north, shopfront inserted to south c. 1970, two-storey extension to east, further additions to north and east c. 1970. Pitched slate roofs with hipped roof to extension, clay ridge tiles, unpainted smooth rendered chimneystacks with corbel courses, cast-iron gutters to east elevation, moulded aluminium gutters and downpipes to west elevation. Unpainted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to west elevation, painted roughcast rendered walling to east. Square-headed window openings, projecting painted smooth rendered reveals, painted stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows to west, casement windows to east (rear), wrought and cast-iron sill guards to ground floor west elevation. Segmental-headed carriage arch, dropped rendered keystone, flanking painted stone wheel guards, painted timber vertically-sheeted double gates with pass door set behind arch; segmental-headed door opening, painted timber doorcase with fluted columns and moulded architrave with egg-and-dart detailing, painted timber six-panelled door, plain-glazed overlight, stone threshold. Street fronted, terrace to north and south.

  Description

  End-of-terrace eleven-bay two-storey former bakery, built c. 1860, now in use as builder's yard. Single-storey return to south-east c. 1950, along Tisdale Street. Hipped slate roof, clay ridge and hip tiles, unpainted smooth rendered corbelled chimneystacks, moulded cast-iron gutters on eaves corbel course. Corrugated asbestos roofs to extensions to east. Painted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to west elevation. Painted roughcast rendered walling to extensions. Painted timber shopfront with symmetrically disposed display windows to either side of recessed entrance, panelled pilasters, moulded architraves, sign fascia with moulded cornice over, decorative mullions with quadrant caps, slot ventilation panels, curved glass returning to hardwood framed glazed door, plain glazed overlight, terrazzo tiled stallrisers returning to entrance door, mosaic panel to entrance threshold with legend "Ardee Bread Coy", awning mechanism. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted timber casement windows c. 1960. Square-headed door opening to north of shopfront, painted timber panelled door c. 1970, plain-glazed overlight. Evidence of timber-lined shop interior survives. Corner-sited, street fronted.
