  Description

  Located on a slight rise on the floodplain of the River Dee c. 3.5km from where it debouches into the sea at Annagassan, with a SW-NE section of the stream c. 70m to the NW. It is also on the demesne of Drumcar. A large oval enclosure (dims c. 90m NE-SW; c. 60m NW-SE) defined by a wide fosse (Wth c. 3-5m) is visible on Google Earth (21/07/2021). Other wide drainage features that might have been associated with meanders of the river are also visible. The enclosure is also visible as a slightly raised feature on Google Earth (05/10/2009; 28/01/2017). Thanks to Anthony Murphy for drawing attention to the Google Earth images. • LH018-006001 Church
  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Undivided nave and chancel (int. dims. c. 21m by c. 5.9m), almost featureless and built of limestone blocks, slabs and greywacke very roughly coursed. There are five windows in the S wall, one or possibly two in the N wall and one in each gable. The building is heavily overgrown with ivy and it is therefore difficult to see any architectural features. There is a doorway in the W end of the S wall which has a two-centred arch. A few pieces of tufa stone can be seen in the upper portion of the E jamb. The inner W jamb and the western portion of the inner arch have been destroyed. The window in the W gable has a narrow rectangular slit with embrasure, is lintelled and is placed high up in the wall. All the windows in the S wall have been broken out, and have wide embrasures and no remaining cut or moulded stone except one (8m from the E wall) which has the base jamb stone at each side and one sill stone. The surviving pieces are of limestone and have glazing grooves and bar holes. The E window has been destroyed though the embrasure survives in places. The remaining N window, which is at the E end, had some tufa stone amongst its remaining jambs. The remains of a doorway, i.e. its W jamb, can be seen in the wall opposite the S doorway. The opposing doorways with the use of tufa stone and limestone would indicate a fifteenth or sixteenth-century date for this building. (CLAJ 1921, 12; CLAJ 1943, 206)

• LH018-077 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a slight N-facing slope. The cropmark of a circular feature (diam. c. 40m) that might be defined by two fosses W-N is visible only on Apple Maps imagery. The perimeter at W is truncated by a N-S field drain that is only mapped on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It was first reported by Jean Charles Caillére. • LH018-078 Kiln
  Description

  Located on the S-facing slope of the valley of a small canalised E-W stream. Archaeological testing (20E0443) by L. Clarke identified a burnt spread (LH018-079----) and this feature which was c. 40m up the slope (excavations.ie 2020:420). It appeared as an oval pit (dims 0.77m x 0.52m; D 0.14m) with a single fill of dark grey sandy clay with moderate inclusions of burnt stone, charcoal and burnt clay, indicating its use as a kiln. About 6m to the W was a circular pit (dims 0.54m x 0.52m; D 0.1m) with a single fill of yellow/brown sandy clay with charcoal flecks and burnt stone material that yielded a piece of burnt flint. • LH018-079 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Situated in the valley of as small E-W canalised stream which joins the meandering S-N White River c. 400m to the W. Archaeological testing (20E0443) by L. Clarke (2021) identified an area of burnt spreads on the N bank of the stream (excavations.ie 2020:420). There were 12 patches of burnt stone material (dims 1.3m x 0.85m to 12.3m xx 5.6m) covering a large area (max. dims c. 27m E-W; c. 9m N-S). Associated with these were two possible troughs, rectangular features (dims 1.5m x 0.7m: dims 1.4m x 0.7m) filled with darker concentrations of burnt stone. There were also 14 circular pits (diam. c. 0.55m to c. 2.4m) containing black sandy clays. The area was traversed by a number of E-W and N-S drains, and a larger V-shaped ditch (L 24m plus; Wth 0.58m; D 0.8m) that crossed NW-SE could be medieval. Only the tops of all these features were explored and the entire area is to be preserved in situ.   Description

  Detached five-bay three-storey over basement former country house, built 1777, now used as a residential care home. Rectangular-plan, central entrance portico c.1850, four-bay three-storey wings to east and west c. 1950. Hipped slate roof behind dressed limestone parapet, smooth rendered chimneystacks, gutter hidden by parapet, cast-iron hoppers and downpipes. Painted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling, unpainted roughcast-render to wings. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills on corbels, painted smooth rendered moulded architraves, segmental pediment to ground floor windows; painted timber nine-over six sliding sash windows to ground floor, six-over-six to first floor, three-over-three to second floor, pedimented window above portico. Dressed sandstone portico, Doric columns supporting triglyphed frieze, dentil cornice and balustrade parapet; square-headed door opening flanked by engaged Ionic columns supporting decorative cornice and pediment, stained glass sidelights; timber double doors containing stained glass lights. Plaque on portico commemorates fifty years of residence by Saint John of God brothers. House set in large grounds with various single-storey buildings for accommodation and clinics.

Coursed rubble stone spandrels and parapets, vertical coping to parapets, Random rubble stone voussoirs to arches, concrete to bases c.2000. Rounded cutwaters to south. Bitmac road surface to single carriageway.

• Saint Fintan's Church (Drumcar), mausoleum, 1865–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding octagonal tooled limestone mausoleum, dated 1868. Slate roof, lead ridges, wrought-iron cross finial; squared limestone walling, projecting chamfered plinth and ashlar buttresses to angles; pointed arch tripartite blind window openings, colonnette arcading surround, foliage decoration to capitals, hood-moulding and moulded reveals, continuous tooled chamfered sill course; inscribed plaques to openings flanking thin loop opening to central window recess; pointed arch door opening, roll moulded reveal springing from engaged columns, hood-moulding with foliage decoration to label stops, limestone threshold approached by four tooled limestone steps to painted timber vertically-sheeted double doors, decorative cast-iron brackets, bounded by wrought-iron railings, cross finials and gate. Set in graveyard bounded by dense foliage, lych gate to south sited to roadside, variety of stone grave markers to site, ruins of late-medieval church of north.

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built 1845. Three-bay nave, single-bay chancel to east, gable-fronted entrance porch to south, gable-fronted vestry to north. Pitched slate roof over nave, stepping down to pitched slate roof over chancel, crested clay ridge tiles, moulded uPVC gutter supported by limestone corbels on nave, ashlar limestone corbel course on chancel, circular cast-iron downpipe; ashlar limestone verge coping to gable ends, carved limestone cross finial to east gable, ashlar limestone bellcote to west, ashlar limestone chimneystack to gable of vestry. Random rubble uncoursed stone walling to nave, squared rubble coursed walling to chancel with plinth; angle buttresses to walling with tooled limestone dressing, tooled limestone quoins to vestry and entrance porch. Tripartite pointed arch lancet windows to east, hood mouldings with label stops, stained glass lights, paired pointed arch openings to north and south elevations of chancel, ashlar limestone surround, stained glass lights; paired and single lancet windows to nave, ashlar limestone surround, fixed diamond leaded lights and stained glass lights. Main entrance to south within gable-fronted porch, pointed arch opening, ashlar limestone surround, painted timber vertically-sheeted double doors accessed by limestone steps, painted timber vertical sheeting to arch, cast-iron tie-bars flank entrance; square-headed opening to vestry, limestone surround, chamfered reveals and soffit, painted timber vertically-sheeted door accessed by limestone steps. Church situated within own site, surrounded by incumbent and upright stone grave markers, octagonal stone mausoleum to north, ruins of early church to north-west. Church accessed through lych gate to south comprising of red brick plinth, concrete capping, painted timber supports surmounted by pan tiled roof.

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement former rectory, built c. 1800, now in use a private house. Decorative cast-iron veranda to north elevation. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, smooth rendered chimneystacks, flat capping, cast-iron gutters on overhanging eaves, circular cast-iron downpipes, glass roof to veranda. Painted smooth rendered walling, rendered corbelled plinth course. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted timber six-over-six sliding sash windows to basement and ground floor, six-over-three to first floor; round-headed window opening to ground floor north elevation, fixed multiple-pane light, timber sliding sash stair window to south elevation. Square-headed door openings, door to north set in rendered porch supporting west end of veranda, engaged pilasters, moulded painted stone door surround, painted timber double doors with two panels; veranda on decorative cast-iron supports accessed by stone steps; timber glazed doors to basement, north elevation and south elevation. House situated in own grounds, single- and two-storey stone outbuildings forming courtyard to east.   Description

  Detached multiple-bay two-storey corn mill, built c. 1800, no longer in use. L-plan, single-story stone addition to north, cast-iron and timber wheel to south. Remains of pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles. Random rubble stone walling. Square-headed window openings, some with timber lintels and some with red brick surrounds. Square-headed door openings, timber lintels and timber vertically-sheeted doors. Restored mill house to north, pitched slate roof, squared coursed rubble walling, red brick quoins, square-headed window and door openings, red brick surrounds, uPVC windows and replacement timber door. Quern stone to site provides evidence of earlier activity. Sited to bank of River Dee to south and roadside to north.
