• LH024-030001 Church
  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 The church is almost entirely levelled with only the E gable in any way complete. It contains the remains of a large window which has a two-centred arch of moulded sandstone springing from decorated imposts. The jamb stones are also of sandstone, are chamfered and contain glazing grooves. The wall is constructed of poorly coursed blocks and boulders of limestone and greywacke. There is a small rectangular ope immediately above the centre of the arch. There are no remains to indicate the number of lights in the window and there is no evidence of tracery. Some of the sandstone blocks clearly show the remains of diagonal tooling, indicating that the building is early medieval. According to Ware (Brooks 1953, 63-4) it was founded c. 1206 and was the hospital priory of St Lawrence and Martyr. A gargoyle (LH024-030005-) lying beside the N wall of the mortuary chapel may have belonged to the church. In the N return of the E gable there is a fragment of limestone (0.44m by 0.40m by 0.24m) which is thought by King (CLAJ 1984, 334-9) to be part of a market cross (LH024-030004-) and could be of late medieval date. There is a portion of a large granite memorial slab (LH024-030003-) with a date of 1613 lying on the ground immediately to the S of the standing remains. It has a cross with a stepped base and crosslets on the arms. There is a skull and cross- bones in each of the upper angles of the cross, and scrolls and triangles near its broken base. There is lettering and the date around the remaining margin of the slab (CLAJ 1945, 25).

  Description

  Sub-rectangular shaped graveyard (map dims. L c. 100m; max. Wth c. 66m) with medieval church remains (LH024-030001-) in SE corner. The earliest noted memorial slab has a date of 1613 (LH024-030003-) and was noted lying on the ground immediately to the S of the church remains (ASI field report 1984?).   A gargoyle was noted lying beside the N wall of the mortuary chapel when inspected by ASI in 1966, it may originally have belonged to the church (LH024-030001-). Composed of sandstone (L 0.88m; Wth of face 0.32m; D of channel 0.22m), only the upper part of the face remains and the underneath side has human arms carved on it.   A rectangular, heavily weathered, fragment of limestone (0.44m by 0.40m by 0.24m) built into the N return of the E gable of Cord church (LH024-030001-). The two visible sides are decorated, one side with a head and the other with the pietà (Our Lady's Pity) scene.   Description

  Located on the summit of a low E-W ridge. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) defined by a fosse is visible on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Blue Sky International during June 2018. It is within a second enclosure (dims c. 77m E-W; c. 62m N-S) defined by a fosse but this enclosure is truncated by an E-W field bank at S and no feature is visible in grass S of this. The outer enclosure has an entrance (Wth c. 5m) at E, and enclosure (LH024-079----) is c. 35m to the ENE. It is also faintly visible on OSI images (1995) as a positive cropmark on Digital Globe (c. 2013). It was first reported by Anthony Murphy.   Description

  Located on the summit of a low E-W ridge.   Description

  Situated on a gentle S-facing slope. A gradiometer survey (21R0044) of about 15.5 ha (c. 40 acres) identified a circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 34m) defined by a single fosse that has an entrance gap (Wth c. 3m) at E. The enclosure is faintly visible on OSI Aerial Premium images (2013-18). The enclosure was archaeologically tested (18E0550 ext.) by Donald Murphy (2021) when the rath ditch (Wth 2.52m; D 0.9m) was encountered and elven possible pits were identified in the interior.   Detached six-bay single-storey thatched house, built c. 1780. Rectangular-plan, porch to south elevation, lean-to outbuilding attached to west elevation. Pitched thatched roof, red brick corbelled chimneystacks. Roughcast lime-washed walling. Square-headed window openings, painted stone sills, painted smooth rendered surrounds, painted timber one-over-one sliding sash windows. Square-headed door opening, painted timber panelled and glazed door. Two-bay two-storey random rubble farm building to north-east, partially-roofed single-storey section attached to west, three-bay single-storey concrete outbuilding to east. Pitched slate roof and corrugated-iron roofs, cast-iron gutters, circular cast-iron downpipes; random rubble stone and concrete walling; square-headed window and door openings, timber casement windows, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors and half doors. House fronting directly onto street, yard to north-east bounded by painted random rubble stone walls accessed through rendered gate piers.

  Attached nine-bay five-storey former mill, built c. 1830, now used as offices. Rectangular-plan, four-storey return to north-west, integral carriage arch to south elevation. Hipped slate roofs, clay ridge and hip tiles, cast-iron gutters fixed to red brick corbelled eaves course, circular cast-iron downpipe, projecting roof canopy to south-west, remnants of pulley mechanism visible. Snecked limestone walling to ground floor, roughly coursed limestone walling to upper levels, tooled limestone block-and-start quoins. Square-headed window openings, tooled limestone sills, red brick block-and-start surrounds, uPVC casement windows. Square-headed door opening to west of south elevation, red brick block-and-start door surround, concrete supports to base, timber diagonally sheeted door, segmental-headed carriage opening to centre of south elevation, tooled limestone block-and-start surround, projecting chamfered plinth blocks, metal roller blind. Street fronted, facing docks and river.

  Attached eleven-bay five-storey former mill, built c. 1830, no longer in use. Irregular plan, integral carriage opening to central bay on ground floor south elevation, five-bay side elevations (east and west), two-bay five-storey block attached to rear (north). Hipped slate roof, cast-iron and some replacement uPVC rainwater goods, projecting timber canopies to east and west end bays. Squared limestone rubble stone walling, ashlar limestone block-and-start quoins. Unpainted coursed rubble walling, painted smooth rendered to eastern wall. Square, camber and round-headed window openings, unpainted tooled stone sills, red brick block-and-start surrounds to south elevation windows, splayed red brick to round-headed opening, square-headed opening with tooled stone, flat lintel headings to remaining openings.
