• MA071-018 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, straddling the break of slope on the NE side. Good views over the surrounding undulating landscape. The Gweestion River is 600m to S. Raised circular platform (43m N−S; 39m E−W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.4-1.7m at SW), which is enhanced by the natural slope and is largely reduced to a scarp (H 1.7m at NE) on the E arc. The scarp serves as a field boundary at SE−SW. The interior slopes down from centre to NE and E. A gap (Wth 2m) at ESE may be an original entrance. On the N side of the gap there is a marked dip in ground level in the rath interior. There is also a break (Wth 2.5m) at NNW and a number of small, narrow gaps have been eroded by cattle around the perimeter. A field boundary (shown on 1931 OS 6-inch map) that merged with the rath at NE−E has been removed. The rath perimeter is ringed with hazel, hawthorn and blackthorn trees. • MA071-019 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a natural rise. The Gweestion River is 160m to S. The views are best to N–NE but are generally not extensive. Raised oval area (27m NW–SE; 18m NE–SW) defined by an earthen scarp (H 2.6-3m at SW–W; 1.5m at NE). The substantial and relatively vertical external slope of the scarp is enhanced by the natural fall of ground, particularly on the SW–W. The entrance appears to have been at ENE where there is a gap (Wth 2m) facing the most gently sloping side of the natural rise. The rath interior is level and grassy; the scarp is ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn and ash trees. An old quarry pit encroaches slightly on the scarp at E. There is a modern house immediately to SE. • MA071-188 Enclosure
  Description

  In a thicket of overgrowth at the narrow W side of a pasture field. It is located at a break of slope on elevated ground, overlooking an expanse of lowlying, poorly drained pasture to SW, with undulating pasture to W and NW. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), with a ring of trees outside the perimeter, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. The remains consist of a circular, flat-topped stony mound (6.3m NW–SE; c. 6m NE–SW) defined by a stony scarp (H 0.55 at E, 0.8–1m at W), which retains a slight internal lip in parts N–NE. Hawthorn trees grow around the perimeter. The mound is difficult to examine due to overgrowth, and its nature is unclear. There is a rath (MA071-028----) c. 100m to SE.   Description

  Seven-arch hump back road bridge over river, extant 1838. Repointed walls centred on triangular cutwaters to piers to upriver (south-east) elevation having pyramidal capping with lichen-covered coping to parapets. Series of seven round arches with repointed cut-limestone voussoirs. Sited spanning Gweestion River with grass banks to river.
