• MA071-154 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, utilising a rise, with a steep fall of ground falls to NNE into a hollow of wet ground. This rath is shown as an embanked enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on the 1931 edition. Oval platform (25.5m NW−SE; 21.7m NE−SW) defined by a scarp (H 1.8m at SW, 4.6m at NE; Wth slope 2.6m at SW, 2.5m at NE) which conforms to the contours of the ridge at N−SE. The interior has a slight rise in the centre, with a slope down from there to S. There is no clearly defined entrance –it may have been on the SE side, which faces the spine of the ridge, but is truncated by a straight field fence on a NE−SW axis. There is a low section of the scarp at W (H 1m) but no clearly defined gap. There is another rath (MA071-189----) 135m to W. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 14 September 2021

• MA071-189 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, straddles the narrow top at the NNW end of a low NNW–SSE ridge, with good views over an undulating landscape. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), incorporated into a field boundary on the SE side, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown later map editions. Raised oval area (27.3m NNW-SSE; 20m ENE–WSW) defined by a scarp (H 1.5-1.7m), truncated slightly at SE by a field fence/property boundary on a NE–SW axis. The natural fall of ground enhances the scarp, which is particularly high and steep on the N half of its circuit. In parts, especially to W the scarp presents an almost vertical face, which may be the result of relatively recent modification of the enclosure. The scarp retains a hint of an internal rim at SW. The entrance may have been to E where there is a broader, gentler slope. The interior has a slightly raised central ENE-WSW spine which gives it a somewhat domed profile. There is a markedly slope down from the centre to NE–E. A level terrace (W 3-4m) skirts the base of the scarp N–E but it is unclear if this is evidence for an outer enclosing element. • MA071-205 Burnt mound
  Description

  In lowlying, damp rush-grown pasture, located on the W bank of a NNW flowing stream/drain. Immediately to NW is a minor road, on an ENE-WSW axis, bordered by a field drain. A sod-covered, oblong mound (9.5m E–W; 4m N–S; H 0.3m) truncated to N by the field drain (W 0.9m; D c. 0.8m). A layer of heat-shattered, friable sandstone fragments in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil is visible in the drain section. Another burnt mound (MA071-206----) is located 50m to SSE. • MA071-206 Burnt mound
  Description

  In lowlying, damp rush-grown pasture, located on the W bank of a NNW flowing stream/drain. Sod-covered, circular mound (12.4m NE–SW; 11.4m NW–SE; H 0.4m), bisected centrally on a NE–SW axis by a field drain (Wth 1.4m at top, 0.8m at base; D 0.4m) which intersects with the stream/drain 3m to NE. Burnt stone in charcoal-rich soil is exposed in the drain section. The mound is in a rather dilapidated condition. Two shallow linear features, possibly cultivation ridges traverse the NW half of the mound on a NE–SW axis and a cattle track has eroded part of the SW edge of the mound.
