- ME042-011 Field system
Description
Situated at the N edge of a plateau. The church of Ardanew (ME042-012----) is within a field system defined by silted drains (Wth of top c. 8m; Wth of base c.3-4m; D 0.5m) forming rectangular fields (dims c. 100m N-S; c. 30-40m E-W) depending from a NW-SE drain c. 30m from the S side of the graveyard which curves around the W side of the graveyard. The fields cover an area of about 10 acres (c. 4 ha). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). - ME042-012 Church
Description
Located on a slight E-W rise, which is at the N edge of a plateau and surrounded by the field system (ME042-011----). Only Dopping’s visitation book (1682-5) records the church of Ardnow alias Ardnorath as a chapel-of-ease to Rathmoylan (ME042-020----) (Ellison 1972, 11). At its suppression in 1540 St Mary’s abbey in Trim (ME036-048021-) owned 41 acres at Ardegrath, but there is no mention of a church (White 1943, 304). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Patrick Birmingham of Corballis, Garreth Lynch of Knock and Lord Tremblestown owned 154 acres at Ardenew in 1640, and there was an ‘old chappell’ on the property (Simington 1940, 180). The church is marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) parish map of Rathmoylan, for which see this web-page accessed on 25 February, 2015: http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/down-survey-maps.php#bm=Moyfenrath&c=Meath&p=Rathmullian Only the W gable (H c. 4m), now fenced off for safety, and the grass covered foundations of the church (dims c. 17m E-W; 7.8m N-S) survive at the W edge of a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 37m E-W; c. 25-30m N-S) defined by masonry walls. The gable has the base of a secondary belfry but no other features. The few headstones are clustered around the W edge of the graveyard and date from c. 1800 to c. 1900. Description
Located on a slight E-W rise, which is at the N edge of a plateau, and it is surrounded by the field system (ME042-011----). The W gable of the church (ME042-012----) survives at the W edge of a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 37m E-W; c. 25-30m N-S) defined by masonry walls. The few headstones are clustered around the W edge of the graveyard and date from c. 1800 to c. 1900. Archaeological testing (05E0312) by C. Description
Situated on a shelf on a SW-facing slope. This is a raised grass and scrub-covered oval area (dims 47m WNW-ESE; 37m NNE-SSW) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 8-9m; int. H 1-1.2m; ext. H 2.5m), with a field bank at the bottom of its outer face WSW-WNW. There is a complete outer fosse (at SSW: Wth of top 5.5m; ext. D 0.5m). The original entrance (Wth of base 1.6m) and causeway (Wth of top 3m; H 0.3m) are at ESE. Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape. A subrectangular grass-covered enclosure (dims c. 80m N-S; c. 70m E-W) defined by a wide earthen bank (Wth c. 7m) is most clearly visible on Google Earth (08/11/2019; 17/01/20210).
