  Description

  Located on a gentle S-facing slope, it is not depicted on any map. This is a D-shaped grass-covered mound (dims 12m WNW-ESE; 7m; NNE-SSW; H 1m at N to 2m at S), which is truncated at N by WNW-ESE road wall and there is a small grass-covered platform (dims 7m N-S; 4m E-W; H c. 0.5m) attached on the E side.   Description

  Situated on a low hill. This is a circular flat-topped and grass-covered mound (diam. of top 13m NE-SW; diam. of base 40m NE-SW; H 5.6m at NE to 7m at SW) with some trees that has a fosse (at NE: Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 1.1m) which can be distinguished from the base of the mound WSW-N-E. The parish church of Girley (ME023-015----) is c. 300m to the ESE. • ME023-015 Church
  Description

  Situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. A church at Girley is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 260). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as ruined (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxix). According to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the church, dedicated to St. Margaret, was in ruins and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellison 1973, 9). The parish church of Girley is withIn a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 65m ENE-WSW; c. 35-40m NNW-SSE) defined by masonry walls. Only part of the W wall with a wide entrance and buttresses survives. The remains are probably 18th century in date. Some cut stone from windows of a late medieval church (ME023-015003-) are incorporated into the graveyard wall near the entrance. Part of a high cross (ME023-022----) is recorded from the graveyard.   Description

  Situated in an undulating landscape. This is a sub-rectangular graveyard (c. 35m x c. 66m) surrounded by a stone wall containing the remains of a church (ME023-015----). The head of a high cross (ME023-022----) was formerly incorporated in the roadside wall at the entrance together with a number of architectural fragments (ME023-015002-); there is no visible trace of the former.   Description

  Oliver Davies undertook a survey of the remains at Girley in 1940 and recorded the following list of architectural fragments in the graveyard (ME023-015001-) and built into the its surrounding wall. It is evident that these came from the medieval church on the site (ME023-015----). (a) Part of glazed central mullion. (b) Part of glazed side-jamb with bar-holes located between the graves of James Jones and James kelly. (c) Tall piece of glaze mullion, weathered and apparently with punch-dressing in front. (d) Part of a glazed side-jamb set into a circular stone setting. (e) Part of an arch of a pointed window, glazed, with probably more than one round head double-cusped lights and small lights above in the tracery. (f) Part of arch of rectangular window with glazed double-cusped ogee lights, jambs have channeled bevels (section like (e)). In top corners are shallow panels. Another piece of arch is very similar and probably from same window. (i) Fragment of a window mullion with galzing channel( H. 0.30m, Wth 0.21, L0.15m). This is set into a line of gravemarkers behind the grave of Edward lenehan in the SW of the graveyard. (j) Window mullion fragment with glazing channel located E of Peter Sheridans grave (dims. • ME023-022 Cross - High cross
  Description

  The head of a high cross was formerly built into the roadside wall in the NE corner of the graveyard at Girley. A small sketch of this was published by Crawford (1926, 9-10). It was described by O'Davies in 1940 (SMR file) as 'Part of a perfect ring and cross, much covered with cement and difficult to see; top of ring broken. In centre is a cup-mark. At side of shaft just below ring apparently an interlaced pattern in raised frame.' Davies was mistaken in his identification of a cup-mark at the centre which is shown in a sketch by Du Noyer as a two-looped whorl (Harbison 1992, 94). Davies also recorded part of the shaft as follows: 'Part of cross-shaft, side apparently unornamented, front has a double frame and a very rubbed panel with squared interlaced ornament. Back built into walls.' Both pieces were photographed in the mid-1960s (Harbison 1990-1, 136-7). The head at this time had been removed from the wall and was lying loose in the graveyard. The piece of the shaft was recorded built into a corner of a wall. Neither fragment was visible when the graveyard was inspected in 1984. (Harbison 1990-1, 134-8; Moore 1986, 136, No. 1408) The cross head has been recovered (O’Reilly 2012) and is now kept in the OPW National Monuments depot at Trim (ME036-079----). It is a ringed cross but the top of the ring and shaft are missing (H c. 0.44m; span c. 0.4m), and it only has interlace decoration on every face, except what might be called the back, which has a moulding at the edge and a hollow (diam. c. 5cm) at the centre with a smaller hollow at the end of one arm, both of which might be secondary. The panels on the other sides consists mostly of interlace knots (dims of shaft c. 0.21m x c. 0.16m). Two other stones described (ibid.) as ’13 inches high, 10.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches deep (H c. 0.33m; 0.27m x 0.16m) and 14 inches high, 8.25 inches wide and 6.5 inches deep (H c. 0.36m; 0.21m x 0.16m)’ with double mouldings and interlace knots in panels are probably from the same cross, although the latter stone is badly damaged with decoration only on one face. • ME023-024 Enclosure
  Description

  Visible as a circular feature on aerial images OSI (2010), Bing (c. 2013) and Google Earth (2005), but not on earlier series such as OSI (1995, 2000). It is situated on a level landscape, and its construction c. 2005 as a very good imitation rath is confirmed locally. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 21m) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 4.7-5.5m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.7-0.8m) with no fosse. • Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, church/chapel, 1795–1805 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four-bay double-height Catholic church, built 1800, on a cruciform plan comprising two-bay double-height nave opening into single-bay (single-bay deep) double-height transepts centred on single-bay double-height shallow chancel to crossing (south); single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch (north). Renovated, 1978, with sanctuary reordered. Replacement pitched artificial slate roof on a cruciform plan with ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods on box eaves. Roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth. Pointed-arch window openings with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, timber mullions, and concealed dressings framing fixed-pane fittings having margined square glazing bars. Lancet window openings (south) with concealed dressings framing fixed-pane fittings having margined square glazing bars. Full-height interior with carpeted central aisle between replacement timber pews, carpeted stepped dais to sanctuary to crossing (south) reordered, 1978, with cut-veined white marble tabernacle in mosaic tiled surround, and cornice to ceiling. Set in landscaped grounds on a slightly elevated site.
