  Description

  Human remains came to light in stripping topsoil in advance of quarrying in 2000. They were encountered in a limited area (diam. c. 7m) 8m S of a boundary of woodland associated with Tobertynan House. Four inhumations, laid supine with the heads at NW were at the base of the topsoil. The burials are preserved in situ (SMR file) within a buffer zone (dims c. 30m E-W; c. 10m N-S) around them. • ME042-030 Burnt spread
  Description

  Situated at the S end of a low NW-S ridge. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified what appeared to be an industrial complex (BGE: 1A/35/2) that was completely excavated (02E0857) apart from the S end of the burnt spreads. It consisted of isolated burnt material at S, and two wooden structures that burnt down. Each of these was connected with corn-drying kilns to the W. Both kilns were of the key-hole type and no artefacts were recovered. The burnt spread consisted of six spreads (total dims c. 4m x c. 2m) of a grey ashy deposit overlaid by charcoal-rich soil with some heat-shattered stone. The spreads overlay one small and two larger pits, and pre-dated other phases. A C14 date of 2200-1890 cal. BC relates to this phase.   Description

  Situated at the S end of a low NW-S ridge. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified what appeared to be an industrial complex (1A/35/2) that was completely excavated (02E0857), apart from the S end of the burnt spreads. It consisted of isolated burnt material at S, and two wooden structures that burnt down. Each of these was connected with corn-drying kilns to the W. Both kilns were of the key-hole type and no artefacts were recovered. This Structure (A) was a penannular slot trench (int. diam. c. 7.2m) with a wide opening (Wth 5.1m) at W. The first phase of a kiln (ME042-030003-) partly filled the opening, while a second kiln (ME042-030003-) was just outside it to the SW. It consisted of isolated burnt material at S, and two wooden structures that burnt down. Each of these was connected with corn-drying kilns to the W. Both kilns were of the key-hole type and no artefacts were recovered. The pennanular structure (ME042-030001-) was replaced by this structure (B), which was horseshoe-shaped (int. dims c. 6m NE-SW; c. 3.5-5.5m NW-SE) and narrower at the W where it was open. It was defined by a slot-trench and posts, and the open side was occupied by the E end of the re-cut of the kiln B (ME042-030003-).   Description

  Situated at the S end of a low NW-S ridge. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified what appeared to be an industrial complex (BGE: 1A/35/2) that was completely excavated (02E0857), apart from the S end of the burnt spreads. It consisted of isolated burnt material at S, and two wooden structures that burnt down. Each of these was connected with corn-drying kilns to the W. Both kilns were of the key-hole type and no artefacts were recovered. The E end of the earlier phase of this kiln partly occupied the wide W opening of structure A (ME042-030001-). It was similar in size and form to the other kiln (ME042-030004-) and they were probably contemporary. The re-cut phase of this kiln was a larger feature (dims 5.9m x 2.5m) and had five charcoal-rich deposits with a rake-out pit at the W end and a fire-pit at the E.   Situated at the S end of a low NW-S ridge. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified what appeared to be an industrial complex (BGE: 1A/35/2) that was completely excavated (02E0857), apart from the S end of the burnt spreads. It consisted of isolated burnt material at S, and two wooden structures that burnt down. Each of these was connected with corn-drying kilns to the W. Both kilns were of the key-hole type and no artefacts were recovered. This kiln (max. dims 3.6m x 1.7m; D 0.57m) was c. 1m SW of the wide opening of structure A (ME042-030002-). It had a bowl on the W side, a central fire-pit and a rake-out at the E end. It had only two charcoal-rich fills, and a long clay-lined flue led from the fire-pit into the structure.
