• RO052-002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a rise in an undulating landscape. Circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 33m E-W; 31.4m N-S) defined by an overgrown earth and stone bank (Wth 4-6m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.5m at E to 1.9m at S) with no evidence of a fosse. The entrance (Wth 2m) is at ESE. Archaeological testing (07E1119) c. 90m to the NE produced no related archaeological material (Kieran 2010a), but excavations c. 130-170m to the W-NW on the line of the N4 motorway recorded a post-medieval burial, a kiln, a barrow and a structure (RO052-032001- to RO052-032004-). • RO052-031001 Barrow - ditch barrow
  Description

  On a S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3270) during 2007 at Ardagawna 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed half of a small ring-ditch (int. diam. 4m; ext. diam. 5.35m NE-SW). The fosse (Wth c. 1m; D 0.4m) was round-bottomed and contained fragments of cremated human bone and a perforated stone. The fill of the fosse produced a C14 date of 1498-1466 cal. BC, and a C14 date from a tree-bole c. 22m to the N provided a C14 date of 1493-1429 cal. BC, suggesting that tree-clearance was connected with the barrow. The structure (RO052-031004-), c. 22m to the NNW, may be contemporary, but the ring-ditch is unassociated with the corn-drying kiln (RO052-031002-) c. 10m to the NW, the burial (RO052-031003-), and the three pits (RO052-031004-), c. 50m to the N and NE.   Description

  On a S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3270) during 2007 at Ardagawna 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed a corn-drying kiln as a burnt pit (dims 2.2m N-S; 1m E-W; D 0.35m) with a second pit (dims 1.2m E-W; 1m N-S; D 0.55m) adjacent to the N. It produced a C14 date of Cal. AD 658-771 and is therefore unassociated with the ring-ditch (RO052-031001-) c. 10m to the SE or the medieval burial (RO052-031003-), but the three pits (RO052-031005-), c. 50m to the N and NE, which are interpreted as possible corn-drying kilns, may be contemporary.   Description

  At the crest of a hillock. Archaeological excavation (E3270) during 2007 at Ardagawna 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed the single inhumation of a female aged 32-42 in a shallow grave cut (dims 1.55m E-W; 0.38m N-S; D 0.28m). It produced a C14 date of Cal. AD 1514-1648 and is unassociated with the ring-ditch (RO052-031001-) c. 50m to the S, or the corn-drying kiln (RO052-031002-) c. 40m to the SW. The three pits (RO052-031005-), within 15-40m to the E and W may be contemporary.   Description

  On a S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3270) during 2007 at Ardagawna 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe N6 road development revealed a small structure as a penannular trench (ext. dims 2.8m N-S; 2.75m E-W). The trench (Wth c. 0.4m; D 0.3m) had an irregular base and produced a piece of worked flint, while the opening faced N. It may have been associated with the ring-ditch (RO052-031001-), c. 22m to the SSE, but the corn-drying kiln (RO052-031002-), the burial (RO052-031003-) and three furnaces (RO052-031005-), within c. 30m of it are probably unrelated.   On a N and E-facing slope of a low hillock. Archaeological excavation (E3270) during 2007 at Ardagawna 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe N6 road development revealed three pits (diam. 1.4-1.7m; D 0.2-0.4m) with bunrt bases. They contained some chared cereals and redeposited burnt subsoil, and one had fragments of burnt bone. They can be interpreted as possible corn-drying kilns, and the proven corn-drying kiln (RO052-031002-) c. 50m to the SW may be related, However, the ring-ditch (RO052-031001-) and the structure (RO052-031004-), c. 50m and 30m to the S of these pits, are probably earlier, and the burial (RO052-031003-) is probably later.   Towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3269) during 2007 at Ardagawna 2 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe N6 road development revealed a burnt mound (dims 6.5m N-S; 3.7m E-W; T 0.12m) overlying a trough (dims 3.65m E-W; 1.1m N-S; D 0.5m) with 24 stake-holes W of the trough. A sample from a stake-hole produced a C14 date of Cal. BC 802-541. Structure (RO052-032002-) is c. 30m to the NE.   Description

  Towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3269)) during 2007 at Ardagawna 2 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed a semicircular arc of stakeholes (diam. c. 2m E-S-W) open to the N, which may have formed a temporary shelter. A small pit (dims 1.35m NW-SE; 0.65m NE-SW; D 0.09m) 4m to the N provided a C14 date of Cal. BC 759-416. A subcircular pit (dims 4.1m NE-SW; 3.1m NW-SE; D 0.85m) c . 5m to the SW is interpreted as a roasting pit and was filled with burnt mound material, probably from fulacht fia (RO052-032001-) which is c. 25m to the SW.
