• RO014-021001 Church
  Description

  The parish church of Tibohine, listed as Techbithirn in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 224) on an early monastery traditionally founded by St Patrick but probably founded by St Baithen Mac Cuanach in the late 6th century which had erenaghs into the 13th century but was probably defunct by then (Gwynne and Hadcock 1988, 45). The saint is Baoithín of Taghboyne, Co. Westmeath (WM025-078001-). He was connected with the Ceinéal Éanna branch of the Ceinéal Connaill sept of the powerful Northern Uí Neill but is not known to have had a connection with Tibohine (Ó Riain 2011, 89-90). It is possible that the saint is confused with St Beoaidh of Ardcarn (RO006-103002-), connected with the Corca Laoighde of south Munster but equally unconnected with Tibohine (ibid. 103). It is possible that the early church was at Curreentorpan (RO014-065001-) c. 5km to the S. Situated on a level landscape. The chancel (int. dims 4.55m E-W; 3.35m N-S), consisting of the E wall (H 3m) with a robbed window and the S wall (H 2.7m) survives in a subrectangular graveyard (RO014-021002-) (dims 80m E-W; 35m-50m N-S) defined by masonry walls with 18th, 19th and 20th century headstones and plain grave-markers, some of remarkable quality (Timoney 2013).   Description

  On a level landscape. Subrectangular graveyard (dims 80m E-W; 35-50m N-S) defined by masonry walls with 18th, 19th and 20th century headstones and plain grave-markers, some of remarkable quality (Timoney 2013). The grave yard contains the remains of the medieval parish church (RO014-021001-). St Baoithín's Roman Catholic church is immediately to the N. • RO014-033 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On the crest of a WNW-ESE ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 42.3m N-S; 38m E-W) defined by an overgrown and complete but gapped earthen bank (Wth 2.7-4m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.8-1.6m) with some inner facing stones at E, and a complete outer rounded fosse (Wth of base 2.8-4.3m; D 0.3-0.5m), which is very slight (D 0.1m) NW-NE. • Saint Baoithín's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1855–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached gable-fronted cruciform Roman Catholic church, built in 1858 to designs by Weightman, Hadfield and Goldie. Four-bay nave with sacristy to rear. Pitched tiled roof with bellcote over gabled entrance bay. Snecked rock-faced limestone walls with stepped lateral buttresses. Lancet windows with tooled limestone surrounds and stained glass windows. Stained glass rose window to chancel. Pointed-arched door openings to front elevation and side chapels with chamfered tooled limestone door surrounds and timber battened doors. Shouldered-arched door opening to sacristy. Single-cell nave with original altar, side altar and communion rails remaining. Timber gallery to west and square-ended chancel to west. Replacement ceiling in nave. Blind quatrefoil opening to sacristy similar to quatrefoil opening incorporated into boundary wall. Possibly taken from earlier church in adjacent site surrounded by grave yard. Site of St. Baoithin's monastery to adjacent site.
