  Description

  Situated on level summit of hillock in pasture. Raised circular area (diam. 19.5m) enclosed by a bank of limestone rubble (Wth 3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.45m). No fosse visible. A modern drystone wall of limestone flags and rubble (Wth 0.45m; int. H 1.45m) has been built along the inner face of the bank on all sides. The external face of the bank has been incorporated into a SW-NE orientated drystone field wall SSE-SE. The original entrance is via a break (Wth 1.5m) in the bank and wall at W.   Description

  Situated on a broad rise in pasture. Raised circular area (diam. c.22m) enclosed by a bank of rubble limestone (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.6m). No fosse visible.   Situated in gently undulating pasture on slight N-facing slope. Two co-joined enclosures. The N enclosure is a raised circular area (diam. 16m) enclosed by a degraded bank of rubble limestone (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.2m). No fosse visible. The bank is incorporated into a NW-SE orientated drystone field wall SW-W. Original entrance not recognisable.   Description

  Situated in gently undulating pasture on slight N-facing slope. Two co-joined enclosures. The bank of the S enclosure links to the bank of the N enclosure (SL005-081001-) at SE and at SSW. The S enclosure is a circular raised area (diam. 15m) enclosed by a very degraded bank of rubble limestone (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.2m). • SL005-084 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located at the NW end of a low undulating ridge which borders the S side of a river. The enclosure is sited at the N-NE edge of the ridge where the slope falls away in a long steep drop to the river bank. The location provides good views over the surrounding hilly terrain, overshadowed to SE by the looming slopes of Benbulbin. It is indicated on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (c. 15-20m), bisected centrally on a roughly N−S axis by a field boundary, and shown on the 1912 edition as a semi-circular hachured arc (diam. c. 15m E−W), curving W−N−E, abutted at SE by field boundaries. It was listed in the SMR (1989) as ‘enclosure’. It was not listed in the RMP (1995) on the basis of a 1991 field report which recorded only a quarry hollow at the location. An inspected in 2016 confirmed that there is evidence of an enclosure. It consists of a circular area (diam. 13m NNE−SSW; 14.5m E−W) defined at SW−NE by a low scarp (Wth 0.5-0.6m), enhanced at N−NE (ext. H 0.7-0.8m; Wth slope 1.3m) by the ridge slope. At N−NE the scarp is topped by a very slight rise or bank (Wth 1m). The scarp is indistinct at NE−E. At ESE−S the circuit is defined by an arc of ruined drystone wall, evident as a tumbled heap (Wth 1.2-1.4m; H 0.3m) of loose stone. The S−SE arc of the enclosure cannot be traced. A roughly circular, now grassed-over, quarry pit (diam. 5.4m; D 0.5-0.8), with a shallower extension (Wth 2m) at SW, has destroyed the centre of the interior. • SL005-085 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Situated on the level summit of hillock, in hilly limestone pasture, overlooking a stream to the NE. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 14m) enclosed by a low bank of rubble limestone (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.3m). No fosse visible. From N-NE, the bank is absent and the edge of the site is defined by a steep NE facing natural slope. A break (Wth 2m) in the bank at S marks the position of the original entrance. • SL005-087 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise in gently undulating pasture on slight N-facing slope. Roughly circular area (dims. 16m N-S; 15m E-W) enclosed by low wall footings (Wth 1m; int. H 0.3m). No fosse visible. The footings of the cashel wall enclose the site ESE-NW. A modern drystone wall has been constructed on the line of the cashel wall NW-N and NE-ESE. A semi-circular sheep pen (dims. 6m NW-SE; 4m NE-SW) defined by modern drystone walls straddles the line of the cashel wall N-NE. The footings of the cashel wall consist mainly of an irregular low rubble limestone bank. Some of the inner and outer facing survives S-SSW consisting of limestone slabs laid on edge at the inner and outer base of the wall with a fill of rubble between the slabs. • SL005-088 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  Situated on a slight N-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. Slightly raised circular area (diam. 18m) enclosed by a bank of rubble limestone (Wth 5.25m; int. H 0.4m). No fosse visible. A modern NNE-SSW orientated drystone field wall crosses the site to W of centre crossing the edge of the site at NW and at SW. The stone bank has been removed to the W of this wall and the site is defined by a scarp. A modern drystone wall (Wth 0.8m; H 1.2m) has been constructed on top of the surviving bank NW-SW. From NW-ENE limestone slabs are laid on edge at the base of the bank as revetting. A break (Wth 2m) in the bank at SE may mark the position of the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F. • SL005-158 Sweathouse
  Description

  Situated on a slight N-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. D-shaped structure (max. int. dims. 1.35m N-S; 1.75m E-W; H 1.3m) with drystone limestone rubble walls (dims. at top T 0.3-0.53m; dims. at base T c.1m) built into natural slope. The N wall is straight and is aligned E-W and the domed roof has collapsed. The entrance (H at N façade 0.66m; Wth 0.5m; H at inner side 0.3m) is at the base of the N wall and has three large slabs as lintels. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 21 April 2011

• SL005-170 Standing stone - pair
  Description

  Situated on a very slight SE-facing slope in gently undulating pasture. A deep V-shaped valley and stream are located 12m to NE. The stone pair consists of two sandstone blocks set 5.5m apart on a NE-SW alignment. The SW stone (1.15m N−S; 0.7m E−W; H 0.95m) is roughly diamond-shaped in section with a gently rounded top. The NE stone (0.8m NW−SE; 0.7m NE−SW; H 1.25m) is square in section with a roughly rounded top, which is stepped in profile on its NE−SW axis. No markings or decoration are evident on either stone.
