  Description

  Near the S end of a ridge overlooking low-lying ground; in the centre of Carrowntemple graveyard (SL044-056002-) and within an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL044-056006-). All that remains standing of the church is its SE corner (ext. c. 6.3m E-W; c. 1.8m N-S; H c. 3m; wall T c. 0.65m). This is built of uncoursed limestone in a lime mortar, and is now heavily encased by ivy. The only evident feature is the splayed side of the E window, where the E wall now breaks off. The interior is filled with grave-plots, marked by low uninscribed stones and by 20th-century headstones. Probably the remains of the medieval parish church of Kilfree (O'Rorke [1889], vol. 2, 363-4). Thirteen cross-slabs (SL044-056004-) and a slab rough-out were found in the graveyard, mainly to the E and S of the church. • SL044-056002 Graveyard
  Description

  In the centre of an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL044-056006-), on the N side of a road. A roughly rectangular graveyard (c. 30m N-S; c. 25m E-W) enclosed by a field boundary on the W side and by the remnants of a boundary wall on the N side; the E and S sides are defined by a stone-faced scarped edge overlooking a 1960s extension. The entrance gate is at the W end of the S side. The interior is mostly under grass but the N end is densely covered by scrub. The graveyard contains many 19th- and 20th-century graves and lines of low uninscribed grave-markers. Fragments of a quernstone (diam. c. 0.35m) lie in the SE corner. In the centre are the fragmentary remains of the medieval parish church of Kilfree (SL044-056001-). Thirteen cross-slabs (SL044-056004-) and a slab rough-out were found in various locations in the graveyard. Replicas of 12 of the cross-slabs have been erected along the stone-faced scarp on the S side. Fragments of quernstones, metal slag and a hammer stone which were found in the graveyard are in the NMI (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). There is a souterrain (SL044-056003-) c. 20m to the NW and a second souterrain (SL044-056007-) c. 150m to the W. • SL044-056003 Souterrain
  Description

  In Carrowntemple ecclesiastical enclosure (SL044-056006-). Two parallel and adjacent drystone-built chambers were described by Wallace and Timoney (1987, 45-6) within the ecclesiastical enclosure and c. 20m NW of the graveyard (SL044-056002-). Both chambers contained a considerable amount of fill and it was not possible to determine if they were connected. Sandstone was used for the walls and roof lintels in both chambers. A small opening, covered by a flat circular stone (diam. 0.4m; T 0.05m), led into one chamber (3.2m x 1.55m) which had an air-vent in its SW corner and an entrance on its N side. The second chamber (3.15m x 1.35m; H 1.45m) had a single course of corbelling supporting the roof lintels, one of which was broken. A possible roof lintel which was also noted a short distance to the NE and at right angles to the chambers may represent a further chamber. Recorded in 1836 as a 'cave or rather covered passage' (OSNB vol. 1, 417). These chambers are no longer accessible (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). A second souterrain (SL044-056007-) lies c. 130m to W.   Description

  Thirteen Early Christian slabs and a slab rough-out were found in various locations around Carrowntemple graveyard (SL044-056002-), mainly to the S and E of the church (SL044-056001-), and were described by Wallace and Timoney (1987, 43-61). Nine of the thirteen are cross-slabs, two are decorated with triskeles, one with a maze pattern and a fragment of one with an inscription. Six of these slabs are now in the NMI. The remainder, apart from one which is concealed in the graveyard, are in the care of Sligo County Council, some being on display in Sligo Museum. Replicas of twelve of them have been erected against the S wall of the old graveyard and there is a duplicate copy of one on top of the wall. The following description is based on Wallace and Timoney (ibid.) and the number assigned to the slab in that publication has been retained. An additional possible cross-slab was found at this site in 2003 and is included at the end of the list. This is the original location of a cross-slab that is now in the care of Sligo County Council (see SL014-284001- for present location). Slab 1: a rectangular slab (1.03m x 0.59m; T 0.08m) with a single-line cross (34.5cm x 21cm) with rounded and slightly expanded terminals. • SL044-056006 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  An arc of a field boundary (C c. 80m) S-N indicated on the 1942-3 OS 6-inch map is probably the remains of the ecclesiastical enclosure surrounding Carrowntemple church and graveyard (SL044-056001-; SL044-056002-). This earth and stone bank (Wth 3-6.6m) survives to a maximum height of 2.5m (Wallace and Timoney 1987, 45). The modern graveyard extending E and S from the old graveyard, which surrounds the church, has removed any trace of the E and SE arcs of the enclosure and a section at NW arc was removed in 1982 (ibid.). According to M. A. Timoney (2002a, 141), this inner enclosure is surrounded by a roughly concentric outer enclosure. The outer enclosure (diam. c. 350m) is preserved in the field boundaries to the S, SW and N of the graveyard (Wallace and Timoney 1987, 45). Two adjacent chambers of a souterrain (SL044-056003-), c. 20m to NW of the graveyard, are within the enclosure. A second souterrain (SL044-056007-) lies c. 150m to W of the graveyard and immediately outside the area of the ecclesiastical enclosure. Slab 10: a roughly rectangular slab (1.21m x 0.47m; T 0.06-0.10m) with a rounded top and a tenon at the base. Both faces are decorated. The smooth slab face features a human figure which comprises a face enclosed by an outer circle, a short naked body with long arms and short legs with relatively large feet. The other face has a cross with a fret pattern below it. The cross comprises a pair of triple-strand ribbons crossed at right-angles and knotted at their extremities. The design below the cross has flaked off leaving only the vestiges of a rectilinear or fret pattern on the upper section. A plinth stone (diam. 0.75m; T 0.19m) with a subrectangular mortise-hole (26.5 cm x 10.5cm) probably held this double-sided slab (Timoney 2002a, 142). This slab is in the National Museum of Ireland (DU018-231----). This is the original location of a cross-slab that is now in the care of Sligo County Council (see SL014-284007- for present location). Slab 14: a slab rough-out (0.64m x 0.46m; T 0.07m) with two narrow lines (L 8cm) forming an 'L' shape in the lower right-hand corner.   Description

  Slab 15 (SL044-056021-): a polygonal shaped slab (0.84m x 0.75m; T 0.08m) with an undressed surface, discovered in 2003 (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). At the edge of the slab is carved an equal-armed cross (H 0.32m; Wth 0.36m) with expanded terminals. While the cross form is comparable with other Early Christian slabs some doubt exists about the date of this carving.
