• SL026-099 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a ridge. A raised circular area (int. diam. 26m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.6m) and an external fosse. A gap (Wth 2.5m) occurs in the bank at S. The external fosse (Wth c. 2m) is evident all round but obscured by overgrowth. The interior is bisected by a N-S field boundary and is raised on the downslope to compensate for the hillslope. This rath forms the NW corner of a trapezoidal-shaped area (c. 80m E-W; c. 35m N-S) defined by two earthen banks and an external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5m). The inner (Wth 0.4m; H 0.35m) and outer (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.5m) banks are c. 2m apart and the intervening area is crossed in places by short stretches of bank. This area is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as planted with trees and is likely to be an estate feature (SL026-099001-).   Description

  In pasture, on a ridge. A trapezoidal-shaped area (c. 80m E-W; c. 35m N-S) defined by two earthen banks and an external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5m). The inner (Wth 0.4m; H 0.35m) and outer (Wth 1.8m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.5m) banks are c. 2m apart and the intervening area is crossed in places by short stretches of bank. A rath (SL026-099----) forms the NW corner of this area. This area is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as planted with trees and is likely to be an estate feature and date from the post-1700 AD period. • SL026-101 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, at the top of a S-facing slope. A circular area (int. diam. 30m) enclosed by two earthen banks with an intervening fosse (Wth 6m) and an outer fosse. The inner bank is most substantial along the S arc (Wth 4m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2.5m) where it drops 2.5m to the base of the intervening fosse (Wth 6m). The outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 2m; ext. H 0.6m) is evident all round apart from a levelled section along the NW arc. The outer fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.5m) is evident along the SW arc. The inner bank is low at SW with a causeway (Wth 3.4m) across the intervening fosse and narrow gap (Wth 1m) in the outer bank. The interior and the outer bank are planted with trees.
