• TS061-025078 Tomb - effigial (present location)
  Description

  Set into a limestone niche at the E end of the SE boundary wall of the Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St Patrick's Rock graveyard (TS061-025035-) which is also a length of the town wall (TS061-025023-). This effigy of a knight in armour, with a shield, has been described in detail by Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 223) who has dated this tomb to c. 1320 as the armour closely resembles that of an effigy at Kilfane, Co. Kilkenny. This effigy is reputedly from the 'Hackett Chapel' of the Franciscan Friary (TS061-025008-) and may be that of Sir William Hackett, the founder of the friary (ibid.). Of the Hackett chapel, the 17th-century Franciscan historian Luke Wadding (1734, 47) states that 'Many tombs of the founders and other families were then to be seen' (Hunt 1974, vol. 1, 224-5). A sarcophagus (TS061-025077-) originally found in the crypt of the friary and now located in the Vicar's Choral on the Rock, is said to be the lower portion of this effigy (Hunt 1974, vol. 1, 223).   Description

  Incorporated into the internal face of the lower masonry courses of the E end of the NE boundary wall of St. John's graveyard (TS061-025035-). The graveyard encloses St. John's C of I Cathedral which is on the site of a medieval church (TS061-025013-). This limestone fragment (dims. 0.38m x 0.16m) is carved with a scroll motif and was possibly part of a wall monument from the medieval church.   Detached three-storey hospital, built c.1934-40, with thirteen-bay top floor, eleven-bay first floor and fifteen-bay ground floor and having five-bay end elevations, with various lower blocks to rear. Recessed central bays and advanced end bays to front façade, former having bowed concrete canopy to ground floor with cast-iron railings to concrete parapet, supported by concrete columns and concrete cornice continuing along central nine bays of façade. Recent pitched-roofed multiple bay single-storey extensions to southwest. Multiple-bay multiple-storey blocks to rear and boiler house with tall concrete chimneystack. Flat over-sailing concrete roofs throughout with concrete cornice and cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted reinforced concrete walls with concrete plinth. Square-headed double and triple window openings with concrete sills and having replacement uPVC windows to front and side elevations and mainly one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to rear and with full-height multi-pane openings to middle of that elevation. Square-headed entrance doorway with curved bakelite surround, timber glazed double-door and over-light, flanked by double windows. Good interior details, including coloured concrete flooring and staircase having similar steps and brass handrails. Painted concrete boundary walls with concrete caps and with vehicular gateway having concrete piers and incorporating three-bay single-storey gate lodge to west side. Gate lodge has bowed southeast corner, flat concrete roof with rendered chimneystack and cornice, painted concrete walls with square-headed window and door openings having painted concrete sills, replacement single and triple PVC windows and recessed replacement timber door with concrete canopy above.

  Detached eight-bay single-storey school, dated 1890. Pitched slate roof with timber bargeboards, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with carved limestone date plaque. Camber-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows. Segmental-headed door opening with timber battened door, timber nine-pane over-light and limestone step. Rubble limestone boundary walls with cast-iron gate having dressed limestone piers and caps.
