• TN010-006 Historic town
  Description

  Situated on flat pasture with good views in all directions. Gleeson refers to Borrisokane as having been an Anglo-Norman parish (1951-2, 104). Though there is no visible surviving medieval fabric in the town, reused fragments of an earlier medieval church were incorporated into the nineteenth-century Protestant church (TN010-006001) at the SE end of the town (pers. comm. Con Manning). In the seventeenth century a retired Cromwellian soldier, Captain James Stopford, was granted land in Borrisokane and under his influence other disbanded soldiers settled in the town (Levinstone Cooney 1975, 5). • TN010-006001 Church
  Description

  A nineteenth-century church is located in the centre of a graveyard (TN010-006002) in Borrisokane village. While there are no visible remains of a pre-1700 church some medieval fragments were found reused in the church walls when the church was being replastered (pers. comm. Con Manning, Nov. 1994). The site is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe in 1302 (CDI, vol. 5, 302). The graveyard, which contains eighteenth/nineteenth-century headstones, is very circular in plan which may also be an indication of an early date.
