• TS054-050 Historic town
  Description

  Present town of Killenaule built on site of medieval town on high ground overlooking stream to E and motte and bailey (TS054-050003-) 173m to NE. The main street runs N-S through the centre of Killenaule with houses on the E and W sides of the main street. The rear boundary plots all share a common boundary indicating that these may be the original burgage plots of the medieval settlement. Killenaule is derived from the Irish Cill Náile meaning church of St. Náile. In c. 1359 the Reeve and community of Killenaule were fined 20d for the assize of bread and ale (Calender Ormond Deeds, 1350-1413, 38). In 1417 Thomas Butler, Prior of Kilmainham granted Killenaule to his son Edmund fitz Thomas Butler (ibid, 1413-1509, 16-17). The Reeve and community of Kilsheelan were summoned to the Seneschal's Court in Clonmel in 1432 (ibid., 95). Killenaule castle was held in 1441 by the first Lord of Knight, Stanon and the following year Walter de Burgo was held in the Earl of Ormond's prison "in the Castle of the town of Killenayl" (Hassett 1990, 26-7). In 1534 Richard Cantwell granted all his messuages and lands in Killenaule to Piers, Earl of Ossory and four years later Henry VIII granted Piers and James Butler the town of Killenaule, among others, in consideration of their faithful service during the Geraldine Rebellion (op. cit., 1509-1547, 64, 178). In 1540 an indenture between Margaret, Countess dowager of Ormond and her son James Butler granted Margaret, among others, the castle, town and manor of Killenaule (ibid. 194). In 1542 James Archer granted to Thomas Marres and Edmund Purcell 'his whole inheritence in the town of Killenaule' and two years later Meiler Cantwell granted Thomas Marres, all his messuages, land etc., in Killenaule and in the burgage of the same (ibid. 221). • TS054-050001 Church
  Description

  On the S side of River Street, the church is at the highest point of a gentle rise, with the graveyard (TS054-050002-) occupying the slope of the hill to the E and S of the church. A motte and bailey (TS054-050003-) is 173m to the NE. The present church is a 19th-century structure built on the site of an earlier 18th-century church. It was a RC foundation until 1762 and thereafter used for Protestant worship. There was clearly a much earlier church on the site as is suggested by an illustration on the Down Survey map of 1655-8. This is borne out by five medieval architectural fragments including a mullion, two other window fragments and two possible door jambs which were found in the graveyard. • TS054-050002 Graveyard
  Description

  On the S side of River Street. The church (TS054-050001-) is at the highest point of a gentle rise with the graveyard occupying the slope of the hill to the E and S of the church and motte and bailey (TS054-050003-) 173m to the NE. The present church is a 19th-century structure built on the site of an earlier 18th-century church. There was clearly a much earlier church on the site as is suggested by an illustration on the Down Survey map of 1655-8. The church was built in the centre of a square-shaped graveyard (int. dims. 46m N-S; 48m E-W) containing 18th and 19th-century memorials. Five medieval architectural fragments, all limestone, including a mullion, two other window fragments and two possible door jambs were found in the graveyard. • TS054-050003 Castle - motte and bailey
  Description

  On the S end of a low-lying natural ridge with its long axis N-S, occupying a central position in a field at the lower east end of the town, NE of River Street. It is not particularly commanding as it is situated at the very western foothills of the Slieveardagh Hills. It is surrounded by marsh on its N, E and S sides with a river running N-S forming the townland boundary 20m to the W. Church (TS054-050001-) and graveyard (TS054-050002-) 173m to the SW. In 1441 the castle in Killenaule belonged to Stanon, the first Lord of Knight (Hassett 1990, 26-7). Walter De Burgo was held in the Earl of Ormond's prison "in the Castle of the town of Killenayl" in 1442 (ibid.). In 1482, Walter, son of William Hackett was also threatened with imprisonment in the castle prison (COD, vol.3, 1413-1509, 246-7). Flat-topped earthen mound (top diam. 16m N-S; 24m E-W; H 3m max.), not a typical motte, being relatively unimpressive in size and non-strategic in its location, with only limited views of the hinterland. The motte is accompanied by a low sub-rectangular bailey (dims. 16m N-S; 24m E-W; H 1.05m above fosse on W side; H 1.15m above surrounding field level) on its E side. It is quite precipitous on its S and W faces with a more gentle gradient to the N and E. Cattle scratching post in bailey. The stone castle, first mentioned in 1441, is not visible at ground level. • TS054-050004 Well
  Description

  At the S end of a large gently sloping meadow formerly accessible via a narrow trackway running east from Bailey Street on the N side of the town. The trackway is now barely discernible. The name Toberavoher obviously derives from the Irish - Tobar an bhothair 'well of the road'. Despite this appellation there is no tradition of any religious pilgrimage to the well or any historical references to suggest its antiquity or otherwise. Toberavoher lies on the N side of a choked stream with a second well now covered adjoining it on the S side. They are separated from each other by a drystone wall running E-W. Access from one to the other is via a narrow stile. Toberavoher was heavily overgrown with hawthorn and briars on the date visited. It is a small rectangular well (D 0.58m) enclosed on its N and S sides by drystone limestone walling and capped with a large flagstone lintel (H above well 1m; T 0.08cm). The well opening (Wth 0.9m) is on the W side and is accessed via a single step leading down from the S side. There is insufficient evidence to warrant its inclusion in the RMP as it is likely to be post-1700 AD in date. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

• TS054-050005 Well
  Description

  Within the E bank of a fast-moving stream and 50m NW of a motte and bailey (TS054-050003-). It is almost totally obscured by hawthorn, elderberry and ivy which over-hangs it. There is no historical or cartographic evidence to suggest that this well is of any antiquity. Its close proximity to a motte and bailey, however, may indicate an association between the two. Alternatively it may be a late landscape feature of the Waldron Estate, created along with the osiery and summer house which, unlike the well, are marked on the 1st (1840) ed. 6-inch OS map. The well, which is not named, is in a very ruinous condition. It comprises a gentle spring partially covered with limestone dry-stone walling. The mouth of the well is 50cm x 75cm. Two large regular-shaped stones lying nearby in the stream may have functioned as lintels at the head of the well. There are no deposits to indicate any religious activity, it was clearly for domestic use. Three large pieces of a lugged iron skillet were found within the spring well. There is insufficient evidence to warrant its inclusion in the RMP as it is likely to be post-1700 AD in date. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

• TS054-104 Standing stone
  Description

  In undulating pasture, c. 65m E of a motte and bailey (TS054-050003-). A possible limestone standing stone (0.3m x 0.2m; H 1.16m), sub-rectangular in plan and orientated N-S. The stone is quite narrow with a flat top which suggests that it may have been erected as a cattle scratching post. There is a depression around the base of the stone due to cattle erosion.
