• WA034-003001 Church
  Description

  Situated on a level, low-lying landscape, c. 470m NE of the SE-NW Goish stream. This is the parish church of Aglish listed as Gallis, probably from Aglish na nGall - the foreigners' church, in the ecclesiastical taxation of 1302 and later documents. It is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims. c. 55m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by a stone-clad earthen bank at E with masonry walls on the other sides. The church is an undifferentiated structure of which only the E gable (H 3.5m; T 0.9m) survives complete with adjacent parts of the N and S walls (int. dim. 5.5m N-S). The E window, now blocked and obscured by ivy, has two round-headed lights in a large embrasure (Wth 1.4m; H 2.3m) with dressed sandstone ingoings, but the central mullion is missing. There is a statue shelf on the inside of the gable at N. A small cross, and a 17th century graveslab recorded by Power (1938a, 57-8) are now missing, but three crudely decorated headstones also mentioned by him and probably of 18th century in date are close to the graveyard perimeter at S. The ocatagonal stoup or font also mentioned by Power (ibid.) is the base of the stem of a wayside cross with pyramidal stops (H 0.42m), now inside the graveyard entrance at N. Archaeological testing (05E0310) of an extensive area c. 60m to the NW and N failed to produce any related material (Noonan and Kearns 2005), although prehistoric material (WA034-075----) was recovered c. 150m to the SW.   Description

  Situated on a level, low-lying landscape, c. 470m NE of the SE-NW Goish stream. The parish church of Aglish (WA034-003001-) is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims. c. 55m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by stone-clad earthen bank at E and masonry walls on the other sides. A fragment of a cross, an octagonal font and a 17th century graveslab recorded by Power (1938a, 57-8) are now missing, but three crudely decorated headstones also mentioned by him and probably of 18th century in date are close to the perimeter of the graveyard at S. The font or stop (ibid.) is probably the base of the stem of an ocagonal wayside cross (dims. 0,28m x 0.28m; H 0.42m) with pyramid stops, which is inside the gateway at N. A fragment of a small cross, consisting of the arms 'thirteen inches across (c. 0.33m)' and part of the shaft, was recorded by Power (1898a, 204) as being in the church ruin (WA034-003001-) at Aglish.   Description

  Situated on a level, low-lying landscape, c. 470m NE of the SE-NW Goish stream. A stoup (Power 1898a, 204), later described as an octagonal font (ext. diam. c. 0.26m) with a basin 'six inches across (c. 15cm)' (Power 1938a, 58), is probably the base of the stem of a wayside cross with an octagonal cross-section (dims. 0.28m x 0.28m; H 0.42m) that is now inside the entrance to the graveyard at N.   Located in the NW angle of Aglish church (WA034-003001-). Power (1898a, 205) records a graveslab of Edward Ryan that was buried in the NW angle of the church. It had a 'floriated' cross, and the largely indecipherable inscription was on two sides of the stone and in panels at the foot of the cross. It is not visible now. Power, Rev. P.   Archaeological testing of an extensive area on the outskirts of Aglish village c. 150m SW of the church (WA034-003001-) produced a number of post-holes, stake-holes, ditches, and a soil spread.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1850, with square-headed carriageway to right, and square-headed carriageway to side elevation to north. Reroofed, c.1950. Now disused. Pitched roof with painted replacement corrugated-iron, c.1950, iron ridge tiles, rendered coping, and no rainwater goods. Random rubble stone walls with lime mortar, and dressed granite quoins to corners. Square-headed window opening with timber sill, lintel, and remains of timber boarded fitting. Square-headed door opening with timber lintel, and timber boarded door. Square-headed carriageways with painted replacement corrugated-iron doors, c.1950. Road fronted with grass verge to front.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, c.1820, possibly over basement retaining some original fenestration with single-bay two-storey return to north. Renovated, c.1970, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch added to centre. Refenestrated, c.1995. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks on axis with ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods on overhanging eaves. Flat felt roof to porch with plastic rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Unpainted roughcast lime rendered walls over random rubble stone construction with exposed random rubble stone construction to rear (north) elevation and to return. Unpainted cement rendered walls to porch. Square-headed window openings with stone sills. Replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1995, with one original 6/6 timber sash window to side (west) elevation, and one original 9/6 timber sash window to return. Square-headed window openings to porch with concrete sills, and timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening with glazed timber panelled door. Set back from road in own grounds with tarmacadam forecourt, and landscaped grounds to site. (ii) Detached seven-bay single- and two-storey rubble stone outbuilding, c.1820, to north comprising five-bay single-storey range with single-bay two-storey bay to right extending into single-bay single-storey end bay. Part reroofed, c.1970. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, and rainwater goods now missing from rendered rubble stone eaves. Pitched roof to end bay with replacement corrugated-iron, c.1970, having iron ridge tiles. Painted random rubble stone walls. Square-headed door openings (including to first floor to two-storey portion) with timber lintels, and remains of timber boarded doors.
