  Description

  Situated on a gentle E-facing slope within a farmyard. It is marked on a Down Survey (1655-6) map and recorded as the property of Lord Power of Curraghmore (WA008-005001-) in 1640 (Simington 1942, 165). This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims. c. 10m N-S; 8.3m E-W) of three storeys under a vault, with a base-batter at the E and N sides. Towards the N end of the W wall a punch-dressed, pointed doorway with a yett leads through a lobby, protected by a murder-hole operated from the second floor, to the ground floor (int. dims. 6.1m N-S; 4.8m E-W). The ground-floor chamber is entered through a plain pointed doorway with a hanging-eye, and has double-splay loops in the N and S walls and destroyed lintelled embrasures in the E and W walls. From the lobby mural stairs rise in the W wall to a lintelled doorway in the passage that is protected by a musket loop opening from the first-floor chamber, and a murder-hole. From here the stairs continue to the SW angle, rise in the S wall and exit at the SE angle above the N-S barrel vault over the first floor and its loft. There is a large ogee-headed window and a blocked fireplace in the N wall of the first floor and a window in the E wall with a garderobe at the SE angle. Access to the first floor loft under the vault was probably by a wooden stairs from the first floor chamber. There are two windows in the E wall of the loft and a garderobe with a blocked entrance at the SE angle. Nothing survives above the vault. Simington, R. C. (ed.)   Description

  Situated on low-lying ground on the E bank of a S-N stream. This is an oval grass-covered mound (dims. 15m ENE-WSW; 10m NNW-SSE) covered by a clay mantle.   Description

  Situated on a low cliff on the E bank of a short SW-NE stream at the point where it enters the King's Channel of the River Suir. It is beside a natural spring at the base of a steep W-facing slope. It was first identified in monitoring (Excavation Licence 05E0517) for the Waterford main drainage scheme in September 2006 by J. Moran (2009) when a Late Bronze Age gold bracelet was recovered. The monument was subsequently fully excavated within the wayleave (Excavation Licence 06E0990) by D. Pollock when two fragments from a flat band of gold with a recurved terminal were found (Pollock 2009c). The site had been and truncated by a pond but appeared as a mound (dims. c. 12m N-S; c. 3-6m E-W; max. T c. 0.8m). It developed around a slight hollow when two oval pits (dims. 1.8m x 1.5m; D 0.7m: 1m x 0.5m; D 0.15m), both filled with shattered sandstone, were dug. They were followed by a third pit (diam. c. 2m; D 0.7m) and the burnt mound material was layered with upcast, including from a rectangular trough (dims. 2m E-W; c. 1.3m N-S; D 0.4m) dug over the larger of the earlier pits. The straight sides of the trough suggest it was wood-lined, and both the trough and the third pit were filled with burnt mound material. The mound produced two C14 dates - 1370-1340 Cal. BC and 1280-900 Cal. BC. A stone axe and 36 lithics were recovered, mostly from ploughsoil, but they suggest earlier activity in the vicinity. (Pollock 2009f) Moran, J.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, c.1770, with two-bay two-storey side elevations, and five-bay two-storey over part-raised basement rear (north-east) elevation. Extended, c.1970, comprising two-bay two-storey lower wing to right (south-east). Extensively renovated, c.1995. Hipped roofs with replacement artificial slate, c.1995, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods on slightly overhanging eaves. Random rubble stone walls (originally rendered with render removed, c.1995) with remains of lime mortar. Exposed concrete block construction to additional wing. Square-headed window openings (two round-headed window openings to rear (north-east) elevation; some camber-headed window openings to basement) with cut-stone sills, replacement red brick block-and-start surrounds, c.1995. Replacement 3/3, 6/6 and 9/6 timber sash windows, c.1995, possibly retaining some early or original models. Square-headed window openings to additional wing with stone sills, replacement red brick block-and-start surrounds, c.1995, and replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1995. Round-headed door opening with three concrete flagged steps, replacement timber panelled door, c.1995, decorative sidelights on timber panels, and decorative fanlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from road in own grounds with gravel forecourt, and landscaped grounds to site.(ii) Detached three-bay single-storey rubble stone coach house, c.1770, to south-east with elliptical-headed carriageway. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, louvered timber lantern to apex having copper-clad ogee dome and weathervane, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Random rubble stone walls (possibly originally rendered) with lime mortar. Square-headed door openings with timber lintels, tongue-and-groove timber panelled half-doors, and louvered timber panelled overpanels. Elliptical-headed carriageway with red brick voussoirs, and tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors.

  Detached five-bay two-storey over part-raised basement house, c.1760, with two-bay two-storey side elevations. Refenestrated, c.1860. Reroofed and renovated, c.1985. Now in use as guesthouse. Hipped roof with replacement artificial slate, c.1985, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Random rubble stone walls (originally rendered with render removed, c.1985) with dressed limestone quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, red brick block-and-start surrounds, and replacement 1/1 timber sash windows, c.1860, having margins. Round-headed door opening approached by flight of nine cut-limestone steps having wrought iron curved railings, red brick surround, timber panelled door, and spoked fanlight. Set back from road in own grounds with landscaped grounds to site.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, c.1800, with four-bay two-storey side elevation to north-west. Reroofed, c.1975. Extensively renovated, c.2000. Hipped roof with replacement artificial slate, c.1975, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack, slightly sproketed eaves, and replacement aluminium rainwater goods, c.1975, on rendered stepped eaves. Random rubble stone walls (originally roughcast with render removed, c.2000) with replacement cement pointing, c.2000, and squared rubble stone quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings (one oculus window opening to front (south-west) elevation) with cut-stone sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds. Replacement 6/6 and 9/6 timber sash windows, c.2000, with replacement fixed-pane window, c.2000, to oculus opening. Round-headed door opening with red brick block-and-start surround, replacement glazed timber panelled door, c.2000, and overlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from road in own grounds with gravel forecourt, and landscaped grounds to site. (ii) Detached single-bay two-storey outbuilding, c.1800, at right angles to south-east with two-bay two-storey side elevations. Renovated and refenestrated, c.2000, possibly with some openings remodelled. Pitched slate roof behind parapet with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack, and no rainwater goods on rendered squared rubble stone eaves. Random rubble stone walls to front (north-west) elevation (possibly originally rendered with render removed, c.2000) with rendered battlemented parapet on stringcourse having paired consoles, moulded coping, and unpainted rendered walls to remainder having red brick quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings (possibly remodelled, c.2000) with stone sills, red brick dressings, and replacement timber casement windows, c.2000. Oculus window opening to side (north-east) elevation with fixed-pane timber window. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door. Section of random rubble stone screen wall to north-east (linking with house) with pointed-arch door opening having red brick block-and-start surround, and red brick battlemented parapet over. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, timber lintels, red brick dressings to first floor forming shallow segmental relieving arches, and timber casement windows. Square-headed door openings (including to first floor side (south-east) elevation) with timber lintels, and glazed timber panelled doors. Square-headed carriageway with timber lintel, red brick dressings forming elliptical relieving arch, and glazed timber panelled doors with overlight. (iv) Detached four-bay single-storey stable building, c.1800, to south-east. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, no chimney stack, rendered coping, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on squared rubble stone eaves. Random rubble stone walls. Square-headed door openings with timber lintels, and timber boarded half-doors.
