Description
First identified by Linda Hegarty of Headland Archaeology in centre-line testing (03E1174) for the Waterford city outer ring road (Hegarty 2006a), and subsequently excavated (03E1755) by Caitríona Gleeson of Headland Archaeology (Gleeson 2006). This is a circular area (int. diam. c. 30m) defined by a deep V-shaped fosse (Wth of top 2m; D 2m), which may have had an outer bank as the fill appeared to have been tipped in from the exterior. The perimeter was truncated by a NW-SE field bank at W, and there was a causeway entrance (Wth 3m) at SE. Charcoal from the base of the fosse at W produced a C14 determination of cal. AD 977-1037. In the interior were the truncated remains of post-holes and pits. Artefacts recovered include prehistoric pottery, iron artefacts and iron slag, and medieval pottery. Evidence of prehistoric activity in the form of post-holes and a possible cremation pit (WA017-121001-) were recovered c. 20m W of the enclosure. (Gleeson 2006; 2010) Gleeson, C. (2006) Williamstown. Description
First identified by Linda Hegarty of Headland Archaeology in centre-line testing (03E1174) for the Waterford city outer ring road (Hegarty 2006, P 509, 1921), and subsequently excavated (031755) by Caitríona Gleeson of Headland Archaeology. Evidence of prehistoric activity in the form of post-holes and a possible cremation pit were recovered c. 20m W of the fosse of rath (WA017-121----). A C14 determination of 1929-1741 cal. BC, suggesting an Early Bronze Age date was recovered from a post-hole, but pottery from the same context is Mid - Late Bronze Age in character. The cremation pit (dims. 0.44 x 0.38m; D 0.24m) with human bone produced a date of 1873-1637 cal. BC, within the Early Bronze Age (Gleeson 2006; 2010, 8-10). Gleeson, C. (2006) Williamstown. - WA017-145 Burnt pit
Description
In flat pasture falling gently to the SE. A ringfort (WA017-121----) was uncovered in an excavation c. 150m to the SW and prehistoric activity (WA017-121001-), in the form of post-holes and a possible cremation pit, were recovered c. 20m W of the fosse of rath. In 2019 testing (19E0143) was carried out in advance of a proposed housing development (Sutton 2019, unpublished report). Excavation revealed a sub-circular shallow pit (diam. 0.7m; D 0.14m) filled by a dark grey silty clay containing frequent charcoal flecks, moderate large charcoal pieces and large flat, cracked stones (av. Size 0.2m x 0.2m x 0.4m) (ibid. 4). A worked flint pebble scrapper was found in the pit (ibid.). An area 5m x 5m was exposed around the pit but no other archaeological features were identified (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 10 February 2021
