  Description

  The chapel or hospital of Mary Magdalen was attached to St Stephen's hospital (WA009-005035-), on a site called the 'Leper's Meadow' on St John's Hill, just S of the city. It had been converted into private housing by 1661 and the City and County Infirmary, built in 1824, was probably built on its site. The infirmary is now derelict.   Detached three-bay two-storey over part-raised basement house with dormer attic, c.1775, retaining original fenestration with two-bay two-storey lean-to lower return to north-east having two-bay single-storey lean-to flanking range to south-east. Extended, c.1850, comprising single-bay two-storey lower end bay to south-east. Renovated, c.2000. Pitched slate roof with red clay crested ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, replacement square rooflights, c.2000, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.2000. Lean-to roofs to returns and to additional end bay with replacement artificial slate, c.2000, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted fine roughcast wall to front (south-west) elevation with painted rendered walls to side elevations to north-west and to south-east, and slate hanging to rear (north-east) elevation. Square-headed window openings with stone sills. 3/3 and 6/6 timber sash windows with some 4/4 timber sash windows. Round-headed door opening approached by seven cut-limestone steps having wrought iron railings, timber panelled door, and spoked fanlight.   Detached single-bay (five-bay deep) single-storey gable-fronted boiler house, built 1897, on a rectangular plan including engaged chimney on an octagonal plan. Now disused. Pitched (gable-fronted) corrugated-asbestos roof with rolled ridge, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves; braced red brick English Garden Wall bond walls (chimney) on concealed red brick English Garden Wall bond base with stringcourse below corbelled stepped capping. Rendered coursed rubble stone walls with concealed flush quoins to corners. Oculus window opening (gable) with monolithic surround framing fixed-pane fitting. Set in shared grounds.

Pitched slate roofs with decorative clay ridge tiles, copper-clad vents to ridge, cut-stone coping having gabled bellcote to north-west and cross finial to south-east, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble stone walls with limestone ashlar quoins to corners and stepped buttresses. Unpainted rendered wall to south-east. Lancet window openings (in tripartite arrangement to chancel; paired to porch) with cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals and fixed-pane diamond-leaded windows and leaded stained glass windows to chancel. Curved triangular window opening to gable to north-west with cut-limestone surround and tracery (forming three curved triangular lights) and fixed-pane leaded stained glass windows. Extended, c.1860, comprising eight-bay two-storey over basement wing to north-west on an L-shaped plan with eleven-bay two-storey return to south-west incorporating three single-bay two-storey canted bay windows, and eight-bay two-storey wing to south-east on an L-shaped plan with seven-bay two-storey return to south-west. Part refenestrated, pre-1999. Now in use as hospital. Pitched and hipped slate roofs behind parapets with clay ridge tiles, limestone ashlar chimney stacks, copper-clad vents to ridges, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Copper-clad ogee-dome to clock tower with moulded finial. Limestone ashlar walls to entrance (north-east) front with cut-limestone dressings including stringcourse to first floor, moulded cornices having blocking courses to parapets, and moulded surrounds forming pediments to gables. Top stage to clock tower comprising limestone ashlar panelled plinth with date stone on cut-granite stepped base with moulded cut-granite coping over, and limestone ashlar walls to clock having cast-iron clock faces set into square recesses with moulded cut-granite cornice over. Unpainted roughcast lime rendered walls to remainder with limestone ashlar quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings (elliptical-headed to first floor projecting bays in elliptical-headed recess; round-headed to ground floor additional range to south-east) with cut-stone sills, and limestone ashlar block-and-start surrounds to returns. 6/6 and 8/8 timber sash windows with some replacement uPVC casement windows, pre-1999, to rear (south-west) elevation. Rendered walls with margined tooled cut-limestone flush quoins to corners. Lancet window openings (gable ends) with margined tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing casement windows having cast-iron lattice glazing bars. Half-octagonal "fish scale" banded pitched slate roof, roll moulded ridge tiles with Cross finial to apex (east), margined tooled cut-limestone crow stepped coping to gable (west), and no rainwater goods. Part repointed coursed rubble stone walls with margined tooled cut-limestone flush quoins to corners. Round-headed window openings with margined tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing concrete block infill. Pitched and hipped slate roofs on a quadrangular plan (gabled to dormer attic windows; half-polygonal to chancel to chapel) with clay and rolled lead ridge tiles, squared rubble stone chimney stacks having cut-limestone quoins, and profiled cast-iron rainwater goods on moulded cut-limestone eaves. Broken coursed squared rubble sandstone walls with cut-limestone dressings including quoins to corners, and horizontal bands to each floor.   Detached fifteen-bay three-storey over part raised basement hospital, dated 1785, on a U-shaped plan centred on three-bay three-storey pedimented breakfront with three-bay three-storey advanced end bays; five-bay three-storey side elevations. Reconstructed, 1896-7, to accommodate alternative use. Closed, 1987. Undergoing reconstruction, 2002, to accommodate proposed alternative use. Pitched slate roofs on L-shaped plans behind parapets; pyramidal slate roof behind parapet (breakfront), ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having chamfered stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta pots, and concealed rainwater goods with cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes.   Detached single-bay double-height International Modern-style Catholic church, built 1973, on an octagonal plan on a corner site with three-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting open porch to south, single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting bays to north, to east, and to west, and single-bay single-storey flat-roofed aisles to remaining elevations. Part refenestrated, pre-1999. Octagonal roof comprising reinforced concrete beams with flat copper-clad infill roofs in stepped arrangement covering fixed-pane leaded stained glass lights, and cross finial to apex. Flat concrete roofs to projecting bays and to aisles behind parapets. Concrete brick English bond walls with mass-concrete parapets to projecting bays and to aisles. Square-headed window openings forming clere-storey with fixed-pane leaded stained glass panels. Square-headed window openings to aisles with poured-concrete tracery, and stained glass lights. Square-headed window openings to projecting bay to east with concrete sills, and replacement uPVC casement windows, pre-1999. Square-headed door openings to projecting bay to south under projecting open porch having reinforced concrete posts, glazed timber double doors, and fixed-pane timber lights. Full-height interior open into roof with central altar on a stepped base. Set back from line of road in own grounds on a stepped base on a corner site with tarmacadam grounds to site.

  Detached six-bay three-storey red brick hospital, dated 1895, on a staggered hand plan retaining original aspect comprising three-bay three-storey block with single-bay single-storey canted projecting bay to centre, two-bay two-storey recessed end bay to north-west, and three-bay three-storey block to south-east having single-bay three-storey canted projecting bay to centre, and two-bay three-storey recessed end bay to south-east. Hipped slate roofs (half-polygonal to canted projecting bays; pitched to end bays) with decorative red clay ridge tiles (rolled lead ridge tiles to hips), louvered vents to apexes on square plans having copper-clad pyramidal roofs, cut-stone coping, and profiled cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-stone eaves. Red brick Flemish bond walls with channelling to ground floor, moulded courses to each floor, decorative terracotta date stone/plaques, and moulded cut-stone cornice to canted projecting bays. Square-headed window openings (paired to main blocks) on moulded cut-stone sills courses. 12/12 timber sash windows. Set back from road in grounds shared with Saint Otteran’s Hospital.(ii) Detached five-bay double-height red brick recreational hall, 1895, to north-west retaining original aspect. Pitched slate roof with decorative red clay ridge tiles, cut-stone coping, and profiled cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-stone eaves. Red brick Flemish bond walls with cut-stone courses. Paired shallow segmental-headed window openings on cut-stone sill course with cut-stone lintels. 6/6 timber sash windows with fixed-pane overlights. Venetian window openings to side elevations to north-west and to south-east with cut-stone sills, lintels, and archivolt having keystone. Fixed-pane timber window to round-headed opening having overlight with 6/6 timber sash windows to flanking openings having fixed-pane overlights.

  Detached two-bay single-storey rubble stone outbuilding with attic, c.1860, retaining original aspect. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, pitched slate roof to lantern to ridge, decorative timber bargeboards to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves. Broken coursed rock-faced squared rubble limestone walls with limestone ashlar quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds, and 3/2 timber sash windows. Lunette window openings to side elevations with cut-stone sills, cut-limestone surrounds, and fixed-pane timber windows. Square-headed window openings to lantern with pivoting (horizontal) timber windows. Set back from road in grounds shared with Saint Otteran’s Hospital.
