• WM036-003001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in pasture, with good views to E, on first ed. OS 6-inch map the ringfort stands at the N end of a woodland plantation. Ringfort (WM036-007----) lies c. 125m to SE. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. 34m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by an irregular embankment which has a number of denuded areas and depressions. There is no definite indication of an external fosse. The interior has a S-facing slope with an uneven surface, possibly due to underlying rock outcrop. A souterrain (WM036-003002-) is visible in the NE quadrant. Monument is visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM036-003002 Souterrain
  Description

  Situated in pasture, with good views to E. Souterrain in NE quadrant of ringfort (WM036-003001-) visible as a horseshoe-shaped depression (dims. L 1.6m; Wth 1.1m) with a small rectangular-shaped depression adjoining the W end. An entrance (dims. Wth 0.9m; L 0.4m) into the souterrain is visible in the rectangular-shaped depression. It is unclear if this is an original entrance or a collapse into a souterrain shaft. A smaller opening into the souterrain, which is set in a depression, lies c. 7m to ENE and appears to be an area of collapse. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM036-005 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated on a rise, in rough pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Possible detached bailey (WM036-006----) lies c. 22m to ENE and appears to be connected to the ringwork via a short, low ridge. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork with a short rectilinear projection to NE. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 27m) defined by a steep scarp with a berm (Wth c. 3-5m) visible from NE-E-S-W-NW where it separates the inner and outer scarp. The inner scarp merges with the outer scarp from NW-N-NE. The interior of the earthwork is uneven. Monument is visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Could be the remains of two ringforts (WM036-006----) as depicted on the first ed. • WM036-006 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a rise, in rough pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Possible ringwork (WM036-005----) lies c. 22m to WSW and appears to be physically connected to the monument via a short, low ridge. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork. Shown on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly triangular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a raised subtriangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 38m NE-SW; 30m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank along a short edge to S with a return along a longer edge to SW and NW. There is a low bank at the foot of the rise which encloses the monument from ENE-E-ESE. The ground slopes away sharply to W, N and E of the monument. There is no indication of an external fosse. The interior of the earthwork is quite uneven and is strewn with stones. Monument is visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Could be the remains of two ringforts (WM036-005----) as depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map or the remains of a ringwork with detached bailey. • WM036-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the N edge of a low ridge running roughly WNW-ESE, in pasture, with good views to N and E. Ringfort (WM036-003001-) and souterrain (WM036-003002-) lies c. 125m to NW and ringwork (WM036-005----) lies c. 195m to SE. Not depicted on OS maps. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 29m) enclosed by an earthen bank visible from ENE-E-S-WNW and reduced to a scarp from WNW-N-ENE.
