• WM007-041 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise in pasture-land, this site has been almost completely destroyed. Ringfort (WM007-041----) 275m to NW. Ringfort (WM007-042----) 220m to SW. Ringfort (WM007-069----) 220m to SSW. Bivallate ringfort (approx. int. diam. 32m N-S) depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular shaped enclosure intersected from W to N by the townland boundary with Ballynakill. No enclosing element is depicted on the N side of the townland boundary. On the revised 1911 ed. OS 6-inch map the monument is depicted as a bivallate enclosure consisting of a circular area enclosed by a bank, fosse and external bank which only survives from NNE-E-ESE . The interior of the ringfort is intersected from W-N by a townland boundary with no external bank depicted on the NW side. It seems likely that the external bank of the ringfort from W to N is located in the adjoining Ballynakill townland. Modern farm buildings now stand inside the centre of the ringfort as visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. An ASI site report from 1975 recorded that a silage pit had been built on the site of the monument. Only a segment of the enclosing bank (max. H 2.5m) and shallow fosse survives at W. • WM007-042 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a steep ridge in pasture-land. Ringfort (WM007-041----) 220m to NE. Ringfort (WM007-069----) 90m to SE. An oval shaped raised area (approx. diam. 27m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank from NW-N-SE, and a shallow fosse at NW-N-E-SE. Possible entrance gap at NE. The interior rises gently towards the centre. The monument has been planted with trees. See attached section of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM007-069 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise in fairly well drained pasture-land, with wide views of the surrounding countryside. Ringfort (WM007-042----) 90m to NW. A slightly raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 40m N-S; 36m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank from N-W-SW, a shallow fosse at E and a poorly preserved outer bank at NE. The interior slopes gently from W-E, and has traces of cultivation ridges which run E-W. A post-1837 field boundary running WSW-ESE intersects the SW side of the monument, and a field boundary, part of an old lane way intersects the SE side of the site.   Description

  Situated on a low ridge in pasture-land, with very wide views to the N and restricted views in other directions. Ringfort (WM007-042----) 210m to NNW. Ringfort (WM007-042---) 140m to NNE. Ringfort (WM007-068---) 160m to SW. A slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 26m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank, almost completely levelled from S-W, a shallow fosse at E & SW, and a poorly preserved outer counterscarp bank at ENE. There is an entrance gap at E. The interior slopes from SW-NE. A field fence running NE-SW, depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map intersects the monument at S. • WM007-071 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the base of NE facing slope of high hill in pasture-land. Ringfort (WM007-078----) 105m to SSE. Ringfort (WM007-079---) 195m SSE. This has been almost completely levelled. Annotated on the 1837 OS Fair Plan as ‘fort’, and depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch maps as a circular-shaped enclosure. This is a sub-circular area (approx. dims 19m NE-SW; 20m NW-SE) enclosed by a very poorly preserved earthen bank (H 0.35m) and a very slight external fosse (Wth 7m). The interior slopes from SW-NE.   Description

  Situated in pasture-land on the S facing slope of a prominent hill with good views of the surrounding hills to E, S & W. A sub-circular shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 29m NNW-SSE; 26.6m ENE-WSW) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank with several disturbance gaps and a wide flat-bottomed external fosse.
