  Description

  Situated on ENE facing slope of a slight hillock, with low-lying wet land to the NE & E, Royal Canal 10m to N and Ballynacarrigy Bridge 190m to ENE. Site of castle (WM010-019----) 35m to S. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular enclosure and annotated as a ‘fort’. Hachured as a circular-shaped monument on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map but not indicated on subsequent editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Levelled enclosure visible as a slight crop mark of light vegetation (approx. diam. 30m E-W).   Description

  Situated on a steep prominent hillock with good views of the surrounding countryside. Royal Canal 85m to N. Ringfort (WM010-018----) 35m to N, earthwork (WM010-020----) 150m to SSE. This is not the came castle as the medieval castle of Ballintue (WM010-040001-) located 1.1km to the SSE that is depicted on the 1654-59 Down Survey map of Kilmacnevan parish map (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of this map recorded that in this parish there was a castle lately ruined 'in Ballintue' (ibid.). This castle is located in the present townland of Kilmacnevan. Depicted as a rectangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 22m NW-SE; 36m NE-SW) and annotated as ‘Site of Castle’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. A series of low earthen banks and depressions mark the site of the levelled castle. At the foot of the hill to SE & S is a complex of grass covered banks, some forming small enclosures which may be settlement earthworks associated with the levelled castle site.   Description

  Situated on top of a small natural rise in gently undulating grassland with good views to the W & N, restricted by higher ground to the SE. Royal Canal 260m to N. Castle (WM010-019----) 150m to the NNW. Poorly preserved much degraded monument of which only the W half remains visible. Present remains consist of a sub-circular shaped area enclosed by a low wide earthen bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.2m) visible only at S. The monument has been bisected by a post-1837 field fence running NNE-SSW. No visible remains of E half of monument. Possible ringfort.   Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise in gently undulating grassland. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a small circular earthwork annotated as a ‘fort’. Present remains consist of a circular shaped area (diam. 11.2m N-S; 12.5m E-W) enclosed by a dry stone wall (Wth 1m; H 0.8m). A collapsed L-shaped dry-stone wall (long portion 5m WSW-ENE; short portion 3.20m SSE-NW; Wth 1.8m; H 0.4m; T 0.5m) of uncertain date is visible in the interior.   Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland with good views from SW-W-N-NE. Described in 1972 as a circular shaped area (approx. diam. 28m NNE-SSW) enclosed by two poorly preserved earthen banks and an intervening fosse. There are traces of dry stone walling and upright slabs forming a revetment in places on the internal face of the inner bank. The fosse and outer bank are visible from SSE-S-W. S of the centre of the interior is a deep depression, possibly indicating the site of a souterrain (WM010-034001-). The site has been subsequently levelled and is only barely visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM011-117 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent natural rise, surrounded by gently undulating grassland with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM011-118---) 350m to SE. A raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 38m N-S; 42m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is best preserved from ESE-SE, and is very slight or levelled elsewhere. The outer bank has been modified where if forms part of a field fence from N-E-SW and has traces of stone facing. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.9m) with a large stone set on edge on the N side in the inner bank at E, a causeway (Wth 4.8m; H 0.3m) across the fosse and gap in the outer bank represented by a modern gateway (Wth 2m). The interior rises towards the centre, where there is a very shallow circular depression which may represent a house site (WM011-117001-). In the NW quadrant a large stone (L 2m NNW-SSE; H 0.5m) set on edge is of unknown significance. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM011-118 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise, surrounded by grassland with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Ringfort (WM011-117---) 350m to NW. Ringfort (WM011-119----) 380m to NE. A large, raised roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam 46m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a wide external fosse. The inner bank has several disturbance gaps, and the fosse is best preserved at S & E. There is an entrance gap at NE and causeway (Wth 5.7m; H 1m) across the fosse. The interior rises towards the centre, where a hay-shed has been built and occupies most of the NW side interior which is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. A large perforated stone is visible in the SE quadrant. Field fences intersect the monument at NNW & S. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM011-119 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland. Ringfort (WM011-118----) 380m to SW. Nunnery (WM011-121---) 135m to SE. A slightly raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by a two poorly preserved earthen banks and intervening fosse. The inner bank has several disturbance gaps and has dry-stone walling on its inner face at ESE, and the outer counterscarp bank is fragmentary also. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.4m) in the inner bank at S, a causeway (Wth 4.4m; H 0.3m) across the fosse and corresponding entrance gap (Wth 1.4m) in the outer bank. There is another possible entrance gap at E (Wth 1.4m). The interior rises towards the centre where an ESB pole has been erected, and a low mound which has been partially dug away exposing some small loose stones. Earthworks of uncertain date visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011 to S & N, although the S earthworks may be an extension of the earthworks around castle (WM011-120---).
