• WM005-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low ridge of rock outcrop surrounded by poorly drained land which is liable to flooding. Bog land 500m to the S and SW, stream marking boundary with county Longford 280m to W. Ringfort (WM005-013----) 150m to ESE, ringfort (WM005-015----) 160m to S and possible hut site (WM005-012----) 45m to SSW. A roughly circular area (approx. diam. 35m)enclosed by a low poorly preserved earth and stone bank only visible at NNE, elsewhere reduced to a scarp, with traces of an external fosse only visible at E and W. Causewayed entrance gap at NNE, a second causewayed gap at E appears to be a later feature. The interior is very uneven and slopes outwards from the centre. Much of the SW part of the interior is occupied by circular grass-covered mound, possibly rock outcrop. There is a smaller irregular mound of earth and stone on the top of this mound which probably represents a collapsed house site (WM005-011001-). A second rectangular shaped structure (WM005-011002-) located W of centre appears to overlie the enclosing bank of the ringfort and is probably a later house site of unknown antiquity.   Description

  Description

Ringfort (WM005-013----) 150m to ESE, ringfort (WM005-015----) 160m to S and possible hut site (WM005-012----) 45m to SSW. The grass-covered wall footings of a rectangular shaped structure located W of centre appears to overlie the enclosing bank of the ringfort and is probably a later house site of unknown antiquity. • WM005-012 Hut site
  Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by marshy land which is liable to flooding. Bog land 465m to the S, stream marking boundary with Longford County 260m to W. Ringfort (WM005-011----) 45m to NNE, ringfort (WM005-013---) 200m to E, ringfort (WM005-015----) 100m to S. Depicted as a small circular-shaped earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Annotated as 'Moat' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. No surface remains visible. Described in 1972 as a small circular-shaped area (approx. diam. c. 7m) defined by a grass covered earth and stone bank with internal stone facing standing one course high, with faint traces of an external fosse. A gap (Wth 2.1m) at NE represents the entrance, which opens towards the nearby ringfort (WM005-011---). • WM005-013 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a low ridge, on poorly drained land. Concentric enclosure (WM005--014----) 470m to ENE, ringfort (WM005-016----) 225m to SW, ringfort (WM005-011----) 160m to W. A roughly D-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 24.5m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by a very low bank from SE-S-W-N, with traces of a slight fosse from ENE-E-S. There is a suggestion of an outer bank and vague traces of a second fosse outside this from SSW-W-N. The site has been intersected by post-1700 field boundaries at NE and SW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a D-shaped with straight side at NE where it formed a field boundary. There are hollow depressions the result of quarrying activity visible at ENE, N & NE. No sign of an entrance feature. The interior is level, with traces of post-1700 cultivation ridges roughly running NE-SW across the monument. • WM005-015 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise on poorly drained land with good views of the surrounding countryside. Ringfort (WM005-016----) located 90m to SSE. Poorly preserved ringfort consists of a roughly circular area (diam. 29m N-S) defined by a very low earth and stone bank best preserved from S-W-NW and an external fosse only visible from S-W-NW. No trace of any entrance feature. The interior is uneven with stones and small boulders projecting from the surface. The interior is bisected by a bank and fosse running NE-SW through the centre. The interior is fairly level and has been cut by a number of later shallow trenches, probably drainage features. The enclosing bank has been levelled from SE-S. • WM005-016 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on a natural rise of rock outcrop in low lying poor pasture with good views, bogland 330m to S. A stream skirts the base of the natural rise on which the site is located from SSW-W-N. Ringfort (WM005-015----) 80m to NNW. An oval-shaped raised area (diam. 27m NE-SW; c. 21m NW-SE) defined by a scarp with no trace of a bank or fosse. No entrance feature visible. The interior has been greatly disturbed by quarrying. There is a good deal of stone visible in the scarp and around the site which appears to be natural rock outcrop. Depicted as a quarry and not as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Annotated as a 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. OS Fair Plan map. Visible as a circular shaped enclosure on Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011. An old field bank running roughly NW-SE runs onto the scarp at E.
