  Description

  Situated on the shoulder of a hillock in low-lying land. Annotated as ‘Doyle’s Well’ on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. A pile of stones and a lone thorn tree mark the site of the well that was filled in with stone by the landowner in the late 1970s or early 1980s as livestock were falling into the well. • WM010-044 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Holy well originally dedicated to St. Brigid but changed to St Matthew in the post 1700 period (Walsh 1957, 103). This holy well is depicted as 'Bridgets Well' on the 1654-59 Down Survey map of Kilmacnevan parish (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of this parish map recorded that there was 'a well in Belnacarroe Vulgarly called Holy Well or St. Bridgetts Well' (ibid.). The local folklore in the Schools' Collection (1937-1939) recorded that the 'local patron saint of this parish is Saint Mathew. In former years the patron saint was Saint Brigid and the time of the Normans they changed it to Saint Mathew. There is a well called after Saint Mathew and it is situated in Ballinacarrow and when the water is rubbed to the warts it is supposed to cure them. People also say prayers to Saint Mathew to get warts cured. The patron day is on the twenty first of September' (The Schools' Collection, Volume 0740, pages 043-044). • Ballynacarrow Bridge, bridge, 1800–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Wide-span single-arched road bridge over River Inny, built c.1857, incorporating the fabric of an earlier bridge to either end (east and west). Constructed using coursed rusticated squared limestone rubble with rusticated rock-faced limestone voussoirs to segmental arch. Rubble limestone construction to earlier sections to east and west. Projecting pulvinated string course at road level and at springing point of arch. Dressed limestone barrel-shaped coping over parapet and terminating piers, on square-plan, to either end of rebuilt section. Rubble limestone construction to earlier sections to east and west having roughly dressed limestone voussoirs. Located to the west of Ballynacarrigy, straddling border with County Longford.
