• WM013-063 Bridge
  Description

  A 16th century stone bridge spanning the River Deel was demolished in the late 1960s and replaced by a concrete bridge which now carries the N52 over the river. An armorial plaque (WM013-063001-) and an inscribed date-stone commemorating the construction of the bridge in 1584 by Sir John Bedlow (Bellew) and his wife Ismay Nugent has been inserted into the parapet wall of the concrete bridge.   Description

  A 16th century armorial plaque and inscribed stone are set into the upstream (N) parapet wall of the modern concrete bridge on the N52 crossing the River Deel. The armorial plaque and inscribed stone were removed from the 16th century bridge (WM013-063---) when it was demolished in the late 1960s. The limestone armorial plaque (dims. H 0.55m x Wth 0.84m) bears two shields belonging to Sir John Bedlow (Bellew) and his third wife Ismay Nugent who was previously married to Thomas Casey of Athboy, they lived at Castletown, Co. Louth. The first shield bears the arms of John Bellew & Ismay Nugent; the second shield bears the arms of Thomas Casey & Ismay Nugent. The armorial stone has a Latin inscription beneath the coat of arms which reads DNS ˑ PUIDEBIT ˑ IN ˑ DNO ˑ CONFIDO ˑ 1586 The inscription on the stone plaque (dims.   Description

  Situated on the NE face of a rocky ridge with restricted views. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 31m E-W) enclosed by a low earthen bank and wide external fosse.   Description

  Situated on a low rise in undulating grassland. An earthwork is depicted at this location on Larkin’s 1808 map of Co. Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580 ). The land was improved using machinery in the late 1970s. There are no surface remains visible of any monument at this location.   Description

  Situated on SE facing slope of hillock, with good views from SE-S. A large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 38m NE-SW) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (max. H 1m) and a shallow external fosse. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.4m) at WSW. The interior slopes from NNE-SSW. Several depressions are visible in the interior. A field fence running N-S, which also marks the townland boundary with Martinstown runs across the E quadrant of the interior. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Situated on a low natural rise on reclaimed grassland on the E side of the River Deel. The rise of ground is enclosed by a wide low earthen bank with external fosse. From SW-W the bank is reduced to a scarp, and from N-NE the perimeter consists of a natural slope. At the N side of the enclosure is a sub-circular shaped annexe (approx. diam. 30m) enclosed by an earthen bank, with a double bank and intervening fosse running through the interior, which also contains low stony mounds.   Description

  Situated on top of a high ridge with commanding views in all directions. An oval shaped area (approx. diam. 20m N-S; 26m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks with an intervening fosse. The outer bank and fosse have been levelled at E by a field fence running N-S. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3.4m) and causeway (Wth 1.8m; H 0.35m) across the fosse at ENE.   Description

  Situated on ESE facing slope e of a high ridge in grassland, with good views to S. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and wide external fosse. The bank is visible from W-N-E, and the fosse is visible from N-ESE. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) at N. A possible hut site (WM013-071001-) at the centre of the interior is visible as a rectangular shaped platform. A 20th century field fence running WSW-ENE cuts across the monument S of centre. The enclosing element of the monument to the S of the field fence has been reduced to a scarp.   Description

  Situated on SE facing slope of a large hill in grassland with good views all around. A large circular slightly raised area (approx. diam. 40m NW-SE; 39m NE-SW) enclosed by two earthen banks, an intervening fosse and an outer fosse. The inner bank is well preserved; the outer bank is visible from NW-NE and from SE-SW, with a slight outer fosse from NE-NW. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) at SE.
