  Description

  On N edge of reclaimed grassland, on low NE facing slope of rising ground on edge of poorly drained land with stream 50m to NNE. Bullaun stone (WM035-007001-) now unlocated 32m to W and second bullaun stone (WM035-009----) 440m to SSE. Ballynahown Court 580m to E. NA subrectangular limestone conglomerate stone (1.2m x 0.95m; H 0.37m) with a single egg-shaped hollow (top diam. 0.33m; base diam. 0.08m; D 0.06m) on its upper surface in the centre of the stone.   Description

  On N edge of reclaimed grassland, on low NE facing slope of rising ground on edge of poorly drained land with stream 50m to NNE. Bullaun stone (WM035-007----) 32m to E and second bullaun stone (WM035-009----) 460m to SSE. Ballynahown Court 610m to E. Unable to locate bullaun stone recorded by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) in 1979 when it was described as following; ‘About 32m due W from the above bullaun (WM035-007----) there is another bullaun stone containing three depressions. The W depression is 30cm in max. width and 8cm deep. The middle depression is 25m in diam. and 6.5cm in depth. The E depression is partly covered by a thin sod. It is 32cm in diam. and 10cm in depth. This depression does not have the same reddened appearance as the others’ (SMR file 02/04/1979). In 1982 the ASI were unable to locate this bullaun and it was speculated that the stone may have been moved during land reclamation works which were carried out in this field (SMR file 09/09/1982).   Description

  The site (Wth 1.9m; D 0.13m) is orientated NNE-SSW and consists of brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.05m) predominantly of ash. The brushwood is up to six layers in depth and laid in three discrete bundles, with occasional pieces lying obliquely. Toolmarks were evident.

• WM035-017 Road - gravel/stone trackway - peatland
  Description

  This site (L 770m; Wth 3.1m; D 0.82m) is orientated NE-SW crossing the N half of Bloomhill Bog from Bloomhill island, Co. Offaly (SMR OF006-001001-) to Ballynahownwood Td. in Co. Westmeath. Portions of the site were excavated in 1983 and 1996 by Breen (E395) and by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (UCD) in 1992 (92E0176). Breen identified eight phases of construction close to the dryland at the S end and both Breen and the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (UCD) recorded three phases towards the centre of the bog. At the S end the earliest phase was of clay, gravel and stone probably laid down in the sixth century AD. This phase was seal by peat and replaced with a layer of clay, stones and large timbers radiocarbon dated to cal. AD 564-775 (GrN-14715). This was followed by further peat growth and over which a layer of timbers was laid that was also covered by peat. Above this there were three successive phases of construction consisting of clay, stone and gravel followed by brushwood and finally a layer of sods. After a further episode of peat growth a surface of large flagstones was laid which was also covered by peat that contained a number of horseshoes. The final phase of construction consisted of birch roundwoods and a number of oak timbers dendrochronologically dated to of AD 1226±9 or later (Q5413). The excavations towards the centre of the bog consisted of a deep bed of clay and gravels sealed by peat with brushwood over which was a surface of large flagstones. Following a further period of peat development a final phase of clay and gravel was laid down. The flagstone layer recorded in all cuttings may represent a single phase of construction along the line of the site. (Breen, T.C., 1988, 321-339; McDonald, T., 1987, 37; McDermott, C., 1995, 59-66)

• WM035-019 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  A substantial brushwood site (L 3m min.; Wth 2.18m; D 0.35m) exposed by peat milling. It consists of a dense arrangement of longitudinal, transverse and irregularly laid brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.038m) with twig packing. Birch was the predominant species noted with hazel also in evidence. The majority of the smaller pieces of brushwood had been broken rather than cut but some toolmarks were present.

• WM035-021 Structure - peatland
  Description

  An irregular dump (Wth 2.1m; D 0.15m) of heavy and light brushwood and twigs of birch and hazel. Many pieces are in branch form and most of the light brushwood has trimmed ends with distinctive signatures. This site is close to SMR WM035-017- and may represent an area of wood working related to its construction.

• WM035-022 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  A scatter (diam. 1m; D 0.1m) of predominantly oak brushwood (diam. 0.024-0.045m) in a haphazard arrangement. A number of vertical pieces were also noted and one piece of oak had been half-split and squared (Wth 0.05m; D 0.04m).

  Description

  A small quantity of dried-out brushwood (diam. 0.022-0.03m) with numerous toolmarks. The ends were generally trimmed, although one piece had been cut and torn.

• WM035-025 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  The site (L 2.4m min.; Wth 1.4m; D 0.25m) is orientated E-W and composed of a compact arrangement of four longitudinal birch roundwoods (diam. 0.092-0.095m) and several pieces of brushwood. A substructure of dispersed brushwood was also evident (av. diam. 0.03m). Toolmarks are present on the roundwoods where branches had been trimmed off and one was worked to a chisel point.

• WM035-026 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  The site (L 1.4m min.; Wth 1.3m; D 0.15m) is orientated E-W and consists of several longitudinal roundwoods (av. diam. 0.12) and occasional transverses, enclosing a dump of branches and twigs (av. diam. 0.025). Species present include oak and birch and one half-split oak was recorded. Most of the ends of the pieces are broken and rotted.

• WM035-027 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  The site (L 4m; Wth 2m; D 0.12m) consists of a very compact arrangement of longitudinal roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.09m) and light brushwood (av. diam. 0.03m) of ash and birch. A single peg was noted. An outlying roundwood with a finely worked end lay W of the main concentration. The sides of this roundwood were trimmed and the end cut to a chisel point.

  Description

  The site (Wth 0.27m; D 0.3m) is orientated N-S and composed of three longitudinal roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.075m) of oak, ash and hazel exposed in the face of a drain, with an outlying timber on the surface of an adjoining field. All of the recorded ends had been worked.

  A deposit (L 1m min.; D 0.18m) of light brushwood and twigs (diam 0.015-0.03m) with worked ends.

• WM035-030 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  A narrow walkway (L 3.14m min.; Wth 0.46m; D 0.15m) composed of a longitudinal roundwood (L 1.9m; diam. 0.09m) of trimmed birch and an oak plank overlying a quantity of brushwood, twigs and occasional transverse roundwoods. Two radially-split and trimmed oak roundwoods with degraded edges were used as pegs. The plank (L 1.42m; Wth 0.06-0.13m; D 0.15m) had a rectangular hourglass mortice (L 0.06m; Wth 0.04m) cut at one end. The substructural wood was predominantly of ash or birch (diam. 0.03-0.07m). The overall condition of the wood was poor. This site may be related to SMR WM035-031----, 20m to the NW.

• WM035-031 Structure - peatland
  Description

  A spread (Wth 1m min.; D 0.1m) of worked roundwoods, brushwood and twigs, predominantly of birch (diam. 0.02-0.07m). A single half-split oak was recorded. The ends of a number of pieces of brushwood are cut to wedge, chisel and pencil points. This site may be related to SMR WM035-030----, 20m to the SE.

  Description

  The site (Wth 1.7m; D 0.15m) consists of three roundwoods (diam. 0.08m max.) laid in a radial arrangement upon a substructure of brushwood (diam. 0.018-0.042m). Most of the wood is birch and one piece shows evidence of branch trimming.

• WM035-034 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  This site (W 0.98m; D 0.1m) is orientated NNW-SSE and consists of and irregular deposit of predominantly birch brushwood, a plank and three pegs exposed at the centre of a field. Numerous toolmarks are present and a number of ends are cut to chisel and wedge points. It is possible that this site represents the surviving substructural components of a more substantial structure.

  Description

  The site (W 1m; D 0.01m) consists of fragments of willow and hazel brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.05m) and twigs in a haphazard arrangement on the milled peat surface. One worked end was noted.

• WM035-036 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  The site (L 2m min.; Wth 1m; D 0.5m) consists of a superstructure of longitudinal roundwoods and brushwood over a substructure of transverse of roundwoods and brushwood. Most of the superstructural wood is broken and damaged. The average roundwood diameter is 0.08m and the brushwood diameters varies from 0.01-0.04m. A number of pieces have worked ends.

  Description

  Section of narrow gauge railway track (3 foot gauge), laid c.1959, having steel level crossing gates. Consists of iron track with iron sleepers resting on rubble stone bedding. Built by Bord na Móna to transport peat and milled peat extracted/harvested at Clonraff/Killgarvan and Bunnahinly Bogs. Located to the south of Athlone and to the northwest of Ballynahown.
