• WM007-038 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on grassland with Lough Derravaragh 65m to NNE, levelled ringfort (WM007-039----) 160m to SSW. Depicted as a grove of trees and not as an antiquity on all editions of the Ordnance Survey six inch maps. On the 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map the possible monument is depicted as a roughly oval-shaped grove of trees with field boundaries intersecting the site at SSW, W and N. However the 1837 Ordnance Survey Field Name Books (No. 42, 4) recorded that in this townland there were '3 ancient forts' (WM007-039----/040----). The grove of trees marked on the six-inch map was believed to be one of the '3 ancient forts'. No surface remains visible of levelled earthwork or of the intersecting field boundaries on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. • WM007-039 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the NW face of a slight slope in good pasture-land overlooking Lough Derravaragh 380m to NE. Possible levelled ringfort (WM007-038----) 160m to NE. No surface remains visible, cropmark of levelled monument clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. A site report from 1975 recorded at the time that monument had been almost completely levelled and the outline of the enclosing element was barely visible at the time. The field report describes the monument as a circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 45m N-S; 42m E-W) enclosed by vague traces of a very poorly preserved earthen bank (Wth 6.5m; H 0.2m at SE) with very slight traces of an outer fosse. • WM007-040 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low ridge which runs NW-SE, in hilly gently undulating pasture-land. Ringfort (WM007-041----) 275m to SE. Slightly raised sub-circular area (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank with slight traces of a fosse, absent at S where a field boundary and post-1700 laneway intersects the monument from SE-SW. Possible entrance gap at ENE (Wth 3m). The slightly raised interior slopes from SW to NE and has traces of cultivation ridges. A low sub-rectangular shaped raised are of mound in the centre may represent a hut or house site (WM007-040001-). See attached section of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.
