Description
Situated on gently undulating grassland with good views to the W. Ringfort (WM011-016----) 390m to SE. Lough Iron visible 1.2km to W. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a rectilinear shaped enclosure and annotated as a ‘fort’. The SW quadrant of the monument appears to have been cut away by a field fence running NW-SE which marks the townland boundary with Farrow. Present remains consist of a sub-triangular shaped area (arc. L 10m N-S; original diam. c. 24m N-S) enclosed by a very low earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; H 0.15m) and external fosse (Wth 2.6m; D 0.3m) with possible causewayed entrance (Wth. 4.2m; H 0.2m) at NNW. Description
Situated on a gentle SW facing slope in grassland with good views from SW-W-NW. Enclosure (WM011-017---) 180m to SSE. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 28m N-S) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and wide external fosse with an entrance gap (Wth 1.6m) at SE. The bank is best preserved from N-E-ESE, and is levelled elsewhere. The fosse is visible from S-W. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the site at SE. The interior slopes from NE-SW. Description
Situated on slight W facing slope in grassland. Ringfort (WM011-016---) 180m to NNW. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a rectilinear shaped enclosure with trees on its perimeter. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS maps. Depicted as a small roughly square shaped field on 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. Present remains consist of a rectangular shaped area (approx. dims. 20m NW-SE; 21m NE-SW) enclosed by a high steep bank of post-1700 appearance and slight shallow external fosse with entrance gap (Wth 5m) at NE. Shape of monument would suggest possible moated site although its depiction on the OS maps would cast doubt about its antiquity. The sharp profile of the enclosing bank would suggest that this earthwork could be the remains of a small post-1700 field. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 14 June 2017
