- WM004-032 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a prominent hill, surrounded by hilly and gently undulating land with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Lough Bane is c. 360m to the N and Carrick House 990m to E. Possible ringfort (WM004-033----) 145m to NNE. Only the S half of this monument survives upstanding as depicted n the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The site has been bisected by a roadway running NW-SE which intersects the ringfort at NE. There is no visible trace of an enclosing element on the N side of this roadway. Present remains consists of a semi-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 29m NW-SE; 19m SW-NE) defined by a low poorly preserved earthen bank mainly reduced to a scarp with shallow external fosse (base Wth 1.4m; top Wth 2.8m) visible from SE-S-W-NW, with traces of an outer bank (H 1m; Wth 2.6m) visible at W only. The uneven interior rises from the perimeter, with a low platform (diam. 9m) SW of centre. There are disturbance gaps in the bank but the original entrance way is not recognisable. - WM004-033 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the top of a hillock in elevated land. Lough Bane is c. 190m to the N, Carrick House is 900m to ESE and ringfort (WM004-032---) 145m to SSW. Monument depicted as a tree-ring and not as an antiquity on all editions of the OS 6-inch maps. A roughly circular raised area (37.5m N-S; 34.5m E-W) defined by a low, poorly preserved earthen bank, best preserved at S, and faced externally with stone masonry of post-1700 date. There are slight traces of an external fosse at N. The raised interior slopes from N-S, and has been planted with trees in the past. This appears to be a ringfort, later re-used as a tree ring. The ringfort or tree-ring stands immediately NNE of a tree-lined avenue leading up to Carrick Ho. as shown on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Description
Situated just below the summit of a hill on SE facing slope with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. A circular area (approx. diam. 45m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank with traces of an internal and external fosse. The interior slopes from NW-SE, with a slight depression near the centre which may represent a house site (WM004-031001-). The site is overgrown with blackthorn. The presence of an internal fosse may suggest that his monument was a ritual or burial site rather than a ringfort.
