• WM011-121 Religious house - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on low-lying undulating grassland, 30m E of Balroe Bridge. Ringfort (WM011-119---) 135m to NW. Laragh Castle (WM011-120----) 200m to SW. Ringfort (WM011-122---) 75m to NE. The Royal canal is 50m to E with stream immediately to W. Depicted as a rectnaguar shaped building aligned E-W on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and annotated as a ‘Nunnery’. On the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map only the E gable of the 'Nunnery' is depicted as upstanding suggesting that most of the building was levelled between these two dates. In 1978 the site was described as consisting of a rectangular shaped area defined by grass-covered wall footings (approx. diam 6m N-S; 16m E-W). An ASI site report from 1980 recorded that this site has been levelled, with pieces of masonry lying against a nearby field fence.   Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hillock surrounded by gently undulating grassland with extensive views. Ringfort (WM011-119----) 210m to W and Nunnery (WM011-121---) 75m to SW. The Royal Canal and Balroe Bridge is 40m to W. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a large circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 40m) but not depicted on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. This site has been substantially levelled. Monument no only visible as a raised scarp curving from SSW- W and from NE-E, enclosed by a wide shallow fosse and outer bank.   Description

  Situated on a low rise of ground in grassland. Ringfort (WM011-124---) 55m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular-shaped tree-plantation which might suggest that this earthwork was a landscape feature of post-1700 date. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. The levelled site is visible as a light coloured patch of grass (approx. dims. 17.7m NW-SE; 23.2m NE-SW) enclosed by a darker zone of vegetation (Wth 1.8m) presumably representing a fosse. • WM011-124 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on low-lying wet grassland. Possible moated site (WM011-123---) 55m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped enclosure and as a semi-circular shaped earthwork on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. The site had been partially levelled between these two dates. Now reduced to an oval scarp (approx. diam 45m NE-SW; H 1m) the monument has been bisected by a 20th century field fence running NE-SW. No trace of the monument survives on the N side of this fence. • Balroe Bridge, bridge, 1805–1815 · Regional interest
  Description

  Single-arch hump-backed canal bridge carrying small road (accommodation road) over Royal Canal, built c.1810. Constructed of ashlar limestone with ashlar limestone detailing including projecting string course at parapet base level/road level. Cut stone pillars to ends of parapet walling. Located adjacent to Lock 34 (15401109) and associated lock-keeper's house and to the southeast of Ballynacarrigy Harbour.

• 34th Lock, lock, 1805–1815 · Regional interest
  Description

  Canal lock, built c.1810, consisting of pair of (restored) timber and steel breast gates with timber footboards, tail gates and balance beams. Set within ashlar limestone lock channel. Located adjacent to Balroe Bridge and associated lock keeper's house (south).
