  Description

  Situated on a low rise 60m S of the River Riffey in poorly drained land with extensive views to the E & W. Depicted as ‘Castlekid’ on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Church (WM006-062----) and graveyard (WM006-062001-) 600m to SW. Motte (WM006-015----) 650m to W. A rectangular raised area (dims. 23m NE-SW; 17m NW-SE) with rounded corners enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank, shallow fosse, second earthen bank and fosse with a third earthen bank and external fosse beyond this. The outer banks and fosses are absent at S. Causewayed entrance gap at NE. Outside this fosse to the NE is a sub-rectangular raised area or possible bailey/annexe (dims. 37m NE-SW; 22m NW-SE) with traces of a poorly preserved earthen bank at SW, and a shallow external fosse. The interior slopes from S-N with traces of cultivation ridges running NE-SW. A possible field system or drainage ditches to N and E of this site visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. • WM006-021 Designed landscape - tree-ring
  Description

  Situated on low rise in low lying marshy pasture-land with good views in all directions, 50m S of a small stream. Barratogher House located 400m to W. Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, but depicted on the 1875 ed. as a circular grove of trees. A sub-circular area (diam. 22m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank, overgrown with trees and bushes, best preserved from E-S-W, and narrow shallow fosse. A gap at NW (Wth 3.5m) may represent an entrance. The interior rises towards the centre, is partly overgrown with scrub and conifers and contains dumps of field clearance stones. The presence of tree stumps suggest that this is the remains of a tree ring, or perhaps a ringfort re-used as a tree ring. Not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OS map. • Barratogher House, house, 1835–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house on L-shaped plan, built c.1840, with extensive complex of contemporary outbuildings to rear. Hipped natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods, two ashlar limestone chimneystacks with ashlar string courses and one rendered chimneystack. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed openings with cut stone sills to ground floor and replacement windows. Round-headed doorcase to centre with cut limestone surround and fanlight over. Set back from road in own grounds with rubble limestone wall with cut limestone coping and wrought-iron railings over to south. Cut limestone gate piers and wrought-iron gates give entry to house and farmyard complex to rear. Located to east of Rathowen on small country road.
