• WM016-015 Mound
  Description

  Situated on a steep natural hillock surrounded by woodland overlooking the Tang River 30m to N. No monument or any antiquity is marked at this location on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map which shows a D-shaped woodland plantation in this area. Depicted on the 1914 ed. OS 6-inch map as a long narrow mound (approx. diam. 35m NW-SE; 7m NE-SW). An area of free of woodland plantation has been kept around this earthwork which is visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. • WM016-020 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small prominent rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a small circular-shaped enclosure. This site has been much disturbed by quarrying. All that remains of the monument is a sub-circular shaped area defined by a scarp, with the slight remains of a bank at N and SE, the perimeter having been levelled from NNE-ESE. A depression in the centre of the interior may represent the remains of a souterrain (WM016-020001-). The S half of the site has been levelled by the construction of a later, small sub-rectangular shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 16.5m N-S x 18m E-W), enclosed by an earth and stone bank. • WM016-020001 Souterrain
  Description

  Situated on a small prominent rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland. A U-shaped depression (L. 12m; top Wth 4.3m; base Wth 2m) depression in the interior of a ringfort (WM016-020---) may represent the remains of a souterrain. • WM016-036 Mound
  Description

  Situated on wet marshy grassland. A pointed oval shaped area (approx. diam. 30m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE) enclosed by two low earthen banks with an intervening fosse. The outer bank is very slight. Much of the interior is occupied by a natural circular shaped mound with a saucer-shaped depression on the top, probably the result of quarrying. The top of the natural mound may been used as a settlement in the crannóg tradition. The area around it is saturated with water at time of inspection. It looks as if this area was a lake at one time and that the mound formed a little island. In 1837 the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books recorded that the townland of Calliaghstown 'contains an ancient mound' (OSNB No. 3, 7). This earthwork may ne the remains of the ancient mound referred to the field name books. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. • WM016-050 Earthwork
  Description

  Unrecorded earthwork identified by Johnny Ryan, Archaeologist, Forestry Inspectorate (Forest Service), Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine that was reported to the NMS on 23/09/2024.  A large sub-circular earthwork (c. 100m NW-SE x 70m NE-SW) defined by a cropmark is visible on Google Earth aerial imagery dated 02/04/2013 and 18/03/2009 and also on aerial imagery dated 2011-2013 MapGenie Digital Globe. Earthwork is no longer visible as this area has now been planted with forestry which is visible on Google Earth aerial imagery dated 24/03/2017. The forest plantation has not undergone any previous thinning works and so a field inspection of this area was deemed to be futile at this time, however, it is planned to carry out an inspection after the first thinning.   Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien based on detail provided by Johnny Ryan   Date of Compilation: 10 November 2025
